Title: Did Impervious Suits really exist?
Post by: Thunderchicken on 08 March 2010, 11:39:23 AM
I've started volunteering at Blists Hill Victorian Town which means I can have a rummage around in their archives and behind the scenes. The other week I found this beauty tucked away in the corner of a car park and the first thing I thought was 'Impervious Suit'! Maybe it's a prototype that never came to fruition. Now to find the legs and arms  ;):

It looks like it even has a rudimentary semaphore system on its roof

Looks great to me, though I think you need to turn it over because I'm sure it's an early space pod (perhaps a moon probe from that film with armchairs int the rocket (what was that called!)!)

Or perhaps it's just a boiler!

Can you sneak it home "one piece at a time" in your lunch box Johnny Cash style?

It´s obviously a boiler, though I think it´s build for hot water supply rather than steam pressure. The thing on top is an emergency valve to release high pressure and it has a quite usual tab on the lower portion. Perhaps that was an early central heating device, but no steam supply, sorry to disappoint you...

To answer your diabolically stupid question- Yes of course they did. ;)

That is just a very cool boiler though :-[

Be gentle with my over-active imagination, I shall weep into my pillow tonight.

It indubitably is an impervious suit. Even 'as 'is bowler 'at on the floor next to 'im.

Don't give in to the nay sayers TC. When you cry yourself to sleep tonight, let your imagination soar. See vissions of torpedo shaped steam walkers on the battle field wrecking havoc on the enemies of the Empire, and awaken inspired. Who knows what might come of this. I think it is a great discovery of alternative history.

Luckily, it seems to have driven the Prussian model beside it into the ground before being disabled... is this the first rediscovery in modern times of one of the Great Lost Battles of the British Steam Empire? Give that man (and his identical twin) a grant from English Heritage I say! Let him write a learned thesis and propose more battle-sites!

somehow it reminds me of the diabolic chicken pie contraption from "chicken run"

and then who comes about with it?
Thunderchicken.....  ;)

but, come to think...
it is definitely an impervious suit, only impervious from the inside  ;)

Makes me think of this:

Is this what the VSF smart set is wearing in Shropshire this year?

The purported bowler in the original picture looks more like a Fez.

It's the sandals-with-socks that definitely proves that the man in the fish-scale underpants is a true Briton, I feel! (And he has a hat on, even if it's a bit silly).

Oh come now, those are obviously scale mail pants-designed as both a fasion accessory and to more better protect his family jewels.
