Well I found another distraction from painting up the three regiments of renown I should be tackling - Ruglud's and Harboth's Orcs and Skarloc's Wood Elves... ::)
Got this little fella a while back on a whim, and, along with some old Norse guys and a couple of adventurers, he is going to be part of an eclectic little bunch of adventurers for SOBH games.
However, till I paint his back-up up I think he would agree with Bilbo Baggins about adventures being nasty things... :o

I'm thinking of using SOBH for some fantasy campaings in the near future too, and I like the style of your painting and miniature selection, so I'm looking forward to see more :)
-
Love that first picture.
I'm sure he'd agree with Bilbo, however, that blade of his looks a darn sight more intimidating that Sting and I'll wager he could take down a few gobbos with it in short order. If you'll excuse the pun :P
-
Great painting; sure looks like someone is in for a real thumping-poor Bilbo.
-
Cheers fellas - I think the pigsticker will keep him out of harms way for a while... >:D
Hope to play some SOBH this weekend so need to get going with his brothers-in-arms!

Hooray - reinforcements have arrived!

Sweet figures from a time almost forgotten... So much character to them...

Blink back those tears of nostalgia :'(
You'll get a better view! :D

I'm sure I have that Norse archer somewhere in my Lead Mountain. Nice work, you look like you're really having fun with this, which is nice to see. Sometimes one gets the impression that people are so set on getting x-numbers of minis turned out in y-time, the fun-factor slips off the radar. But you look like you're having a blast (or, maybe it's because you have a Hobbit, and they're inherently amusing).
But I want to see what you've done with Harboth's Black Mountain Boys!
-
Afraid Harboth's lot are languishing in different states of decay at the mo - some need a serious dose of nitromorse to purge them of second hand paint jobs, some need the same for my efforts some 10-15 years ago and Harboth himself is nearly base-coated...
Like you said I'm having fun following whatever whim has the strongest pull - currently distracted by this latest Norse flavoured adventure - probably shouldn't have put the telly on tonight (Dragonheart was on) as I now want an old characterful dragon to go with this Norse warband - vague memories of reading the sagas of Eric the Viking as a kid... >:D.
Looking at the paint queue there are some rather disgruntled Wood Elf archers waiting to join Skarloc - base-coated and inked up from before Christmas... ::)
Then there's the boarboyz and Ruglud's lot... ;D
but dammit all just bought a pair of old citadel gnomes off of ebay - what is it with the little folk... 8)
Also purchased his and hers barbarians - rougher end of the Norse band, a dwarf thief, couple of Empire knight/fighters, a mad norse style cleric, and Tom Meiers Lizardmen 'cos they were going for a fiver - including the chap on a cold one... :o
Some may say I lack focus... o_o
-
And I say you have a healthy range of interests! ;)
I'm the same, my attention span is very ... what's that? Oooh, shiney!
-
Must say, I'm the same...
You just have to reel it back to one thing once in a while and focus.
I generally have to do that 2 or 3 times a week (sometimes a weekend!!!)! lol
-
Sorry what were you saying.....
;)
Anyways - back with the adventurers - more reinforcements!
Erik Erikson and his motley bunch have arrived...

Excellent,
I have a bunch of the old Norse, mainly original citadel but some later foundry to bulk them up. I don't have this guy though:
He is well up on my list of guys to get, just never got round to it. He fits in really well with the Norse though.
I need to get round to some more painting but a workaholic wife and a 20 month old rascal don't leave much time!
-
Yep he's my fave too - good for a grizzly old forrester too!
I need to get round to some more painting but a workaholic wife and a 20 month old rascal don't leave much time!
Know the feeling - I'm currently on paternity leave (due date is Friday! :D) and am trying to balance getting as much painting done without annoying wife too much and keeping an eye on our nearly 2 year old!
How do the foundry ones rack up with the citadel norse? Any appreciable difference in scale? They do look very similar in style and not a bad price... :P
Looking for some Empire militia types as again Ebay is looking pricey for 80s citadel!
-
Good luck with that, my wife tends to be understanding about my odd need to collect and paint but sometimes I push it to far then I'm for the high jump....
The current foundry Norse are about right, I think maybe a little bigger but I only have a champion from that range i picked up from a sample pack. The ones I have are the old range which are the exact same figures as the citadel ones except they have a molded base not a slotta. No idea if foundry still make them but if they do that would be the most comprehensive part of the citadel back catalog available! The old feudals were the same...
-
I have a regiment that mixes some of the old Citadel Norse w/ Foundry Vikings, and they do rather well mixing. The Cits are a bit shorter, but realistically so. The newest Foundry Vikings are huge, Mike Owens sculpts I think. Would still look fine on the table, but line 'em up and you'll see the big diff.
-
Cool any pics?
Some of the foundry ones I have are identical to the citadels so there shouldn't' be any difference in height, though I guess it depends which ones you're comparing.
-
I wouldn't care about height difference with vikings.
They are meant to be Norse in Fantasy and in my opinion, as a result, they should be massive anyway!
I'd go with foundry if you can't get citadel. ;)
Maybe even gripping beast.

Yep pics would be nice!
Not thought of Gripping Beast - cheers Rob!

Here you go:

Citadel, Foundry Frank, Foundry Viking, Gripping Beast Viking, Foundry, Citadel, in the front row.

Nice unit, lovely paint job. You have quite a mix but they work well.
I have quite a few of the perry Franks in my Frankish horde, I love them but as I said only one the newer foundry vikings.
I've never bought any gripping beast though there late Romans and Arthurians have often tempted me. They just don't look great until you paint them.
Do they mainly get used in fantasy games?
-
Very nice indeed - must stop being lazy and paint some stripy trousers!
The different ranges do mix well - lovely paint jobs help I'm sure! :D
-
I never play games, just a sad, lonely painter,,, :'(
The boys have never seen a battlefield, but they are currently playing the part of Saxons in my WAB Age of Arthur collection to fill the ranks of my mostly Musketeer Saxon army.
The GB Arthurians are beautiful painted!! I sold some of my precious Ogres:
http://displacedminiatures.com/LeadAsbestos/gallery/68/
to buy an army of them, and it was a great decision! They are next to be photographed on my displaced minis site, so keep yr eyes peeled!
-
Don't go leading me astray by talking about Arthurian stuff >:(
Just finished rereading a load of Rosemary Sutcliffe stuff a while back and thought a war host for Artur the Bear would be rather nice... ::)
Man that must have been a tough decision to lose those lovely ogres... :o
