Title: Chicago WIP
Post by: walktapus on 27 May 2007, 06:33:02 PM
My new project is to build some Chicago buildings for gangs and police fighting during the prohibition.

My apologies to any inhabitant of Chicago if this does not look like the real one :)

I know I will need some warehouses, dock buildings and for the actual action, but I would like to have big brick buildings lying somewhere on the table.

So I scratchbuilt this façade from foamboard and cardboard.

It can be put against a wall on the side of the gaming table, or put alongside other façades and completed with simple brick walls to form blocks. The minis won't be able to go inside, but who cares ? The size of the building and the three storeys would make it very impractical anyway.

What do you think of this idea ? Any similar project ?

Very nice, and a great idea of making only the facade- That will save you space too- on the game table, in transport and for storage.

And, yes, that building looks like it could be in Chicago. I'm not from Chicago, but I live in the Midwest and visit occasionally.

Do you have more?  Show us! :)  :)

I did live in Chicago for a couple of years but rather than trying to explain whatthe city looks like I'd recommend a visit to  www.encyclopedia.chicagohistory.org or Chicago Historical Society. I saw an exibition there a few yeas back, the name elludes me, but it was about the roaring 20-ies and the prohibition times. It was fantastic. They had a cat walk with models in authentic get-ups, flappers dancing Charleston and two-step, a speak easy replica etc, etc.

One thing: read about "the L". It is an ubiquitus feature in the Chicago landscape.

looks absolutely great and the facade idea isn't bad at all, at first for the relatively small 45A tables

Very inspirational! I've just started doing the same thing in 1/32 scale.

Chicago in 1/32 scale? Are there mob figures in that scale?

Yes, Marx did them in the 60's and they have been recast for a while now.  You can even get Bar, Hotel and barber shop scenery!  I'm getting mine from Michtoy.

Next building : this time a 3D warehouse.

The roofs can be removed, and it is in three parts, so to be easily stored.

Fully scratch-built, except the crates. Hope the roof is OK.

Do you know where I could find some pictures of the "L" ? I would love to make a segment of it  :D

Six months later, I am starting again. Carving so many bricks is boring, so I have started making my own silicon moulds to cast whole resin walls.

Here is what I have cast so far :

Here are a few pictures of the painted buildings, shot during a demo game at a small con in Paris last Thursday.

(more on http://psilete.free.fr/?/Pulp/Scenes-prohibition )

I have also started making molds for sidewalks sections and chimney pots, but the moulds are still drying yet.

At least you have got further than me, my first (and only) building was undercoated and then blown off the table by the wind while it was drying and snapped flat    so now I consol myself with painting the figures.
