I was thumbing through a copy of the beautiful Black Powder rule book last weekend and I need to know who makes the maxim gun team with Slouch hats on page 83. Wish that I could provide a picture. Anybody know?

This one?:-

Don't know the answer though, sorry.

I believe they are from Wargames Foundry's Boer War range.

I believe Barry is correct :)

Are they conversions, or did Foundry previously do more packs than they currently sell? On their site the MG teams have helmets, there are none with slouch hats. Look like the same poses, though.

Must admit I never paid any attention to this range before. With a befezzed African head swapped on and a Sikh NCO in charge those chaps could just about pass muster for my Central Africa Rifles force. I've got all the figures I need apart from an 1890s Maxim and crew. Being old Foundry though they are probably teeny tiny.
-
As far as I know, Foundry never produced that team with slouch hats. I suspect a head-swap.
Well done, too.
-
They certainly look like Perry work. Are these some of the specials that they did for the Baden-Powell programme?

Being old Foundry though they are probably teeny tiny.
But, as they are kneeling, the perceived difference should be negligible. Slip a piece of card between figure's base and scenic base and it should look fine. I often mount old Foundry's on double thickness bases and they really aren't noticeable on the table when next to newer Copplestones etc.
Being in separate units from the rest of the infantry should disguise any difference in equipment size.

Good point (I've done the same thing myself - building up the base, that is), but I was also thinking it might be hard to find suitable heads small enough to go on them without looking silly.
For the screw gun in my force it's Perry heads swapped on to Perry bodies, so no worries. This one, I'm not so sure, and Foundry are a little pricey to buy on the off-chance.

For what it's worth, here's what I think.
The 'old' WF Boer War British were divided into 'early' and 'later' uniforms. I think that they were exactly the same sculpts, but the 'later' figures had slouch hats. The lines were almost exactly the same; shooting in helmet/hat, loading in helmet/hat, etc. etc.
I have a MG crew in pith helmet, so that's where I think the figures came from. But it is a conversion, because I don't think that the MG or artillery crews came in slouch hats.
Did that actually help any?

In the sense of confirming what everybody (except Joroas) already thought, it did help, yes! :)

That was indeed the picture. Thank you gentlemen. I will have to convert something similar.

Perry Sudanese Infantry heads would fit, but as you say it could be a bit expensive if things don't work out :?
What you need is someone living in Nottingham, who can smuggle a Perry mini into Foundry to check on compatibility and then buy the gun and crew without the silly postage charges.......

Perry Sudanese Infantry heads would fit
Do you think? Everyone says Perry are small, but this force is a mix of Perry Sudan (for Sikh NCOs and the screw gun) and Foundry DA, and surprisingly I find the Perry figures to be an almost perfect match with the supposedly "big" DA stuff, so I think a Perry head might be a bit big on an old Foundry body.
Still, probably ain't gonna happen anyway, so there's no point fretting about it. £11+£8 p+p for one pack of four figures and two machine guns? I think they are mistaking me for some Russian oligarch looking to buy a Premier League team. You are having a fucking laugh, boys. :?

They have a 20% off sale at the moment, though............

Individuals such as B-P, his staff, artillery crews , some unique artillery pieces and weird stuff like jam tin bomb throwers, fake mine carriers (these were sand-filled boxes made to look like mines) and search-light bearers had to be one-off made from scratch or converted from existing figures. Some civilians from Mark Coppertone’s Foundry Old West range were also pressed into service.
We asked Jim Bowen, Dave Woodward and Chris Adcock if they’d be up for painting batches of figures as they came out the mould. Luckily they were all keen and did an amazing job in double-quick time. With out them we couldn’t have done it. In all over 200 newly made figures were painted together with the original 50 or so Boers we managed populate the 14x 6 foot board.
We’re not intending to produce any of these figures for sale, but if there is interest we could make a production mould or two.
This from the Perry site might explain the MG team...........

I have Perry RN Landing Party and Sudanese regulars and in my opinion they do fit in well Copplestone's sailors, yet I happily mix foundry ECW (one of the older "small" Ranges) in with the Perry ECW stuff :?
I haven't done head swaps though, so I don't know if they would look odd.
As you say, £19.00 is a particularly silly price for two MGs and crews. Why can't they just charge 10% or whatever P&P. I would certainly buy a lot more stuff from them. As it is, there are usually cheaper options of at least comparable quality. Their loss, I suppose.

You know....
You might have a go at creating a 'press mould' in sulfur free clay, and then casting up some slouch hats. Although, it would be easier to go the other way, and cast up pith helmets to replace slouch hats, rather than the other way around.
Just thinking.
