Title: Grave Markers WIP (Updated 5 Sept. 2010)
Post by: Ramirez Noname on April 08, 2010, 02:59:16 PM
Hi All,

Thought I would post a few phots of some grave markers which I am working on for a friend. He wants to build a necropolis railway, so there will be a few more in the production line.

The whitemetal parts are produced by "Langley" a model railway company and I have scratch built the surrounds. They are based on mounting board and are awaiting undercoating and finishing. There will also be some white coloured "chippings" in the green areas.

Also, here is a prototype shot of a churchyard at Elmley Lovett in Worcestershire.

Very nice.
I have just done some in a rather more overgrown state. How do you intend to do the gravel. Mine didn't come out at all well but the 'weeds' cover a multitude of cock ups!

Thanks Guys,

@ John - I was goining to use some fine railway ballast, give it an undercoat of black and work it up using blues to a pure white; at least thats the plan - I might end up using a lot of "weeds"  ;)

@ Joroas - The Brookwood Necropolis Railway near Woking. The huge cemetry was built for the dead of London. The bodies (in coffins) were loaded at the Necropolis Railways London termini (near Waterloo) into specially built vans and the mourners had their own carriages; the Company even issued tickets - although some were only one way. The railway went right into the cemetry. More info can be found in John M Clarke's book "The Brookwood Necropolis Railway" published by The Oakwood Press. o_o

Hope that helps.

Wow, that´s exciting! I read all about the London Necropolis railway and I know you are into model railroading (I suppose your friend is too). Please keep me informed about what he´s doing and about progress on that project! If you prefer to pm that ill be alright as well.

They look ace so far.

What are the graves based on, they look like they taper quite nicely?

Hi All,

@ Michi -I'll post more phots as the work progress. The guy they are being made for is building a short railway in 0n30 to display all his "funereal" collection on; he has a large collection of hearses, etc.

@ Court Jester - Thanks. They are based on a 2-3mm thick "plastic" mounting board. It's called "Forex", luckily I get offcuts from my local printer. It's great stuff; very durable and can be carved with a Stanley knife and filed to a tapered edge.

Hope this helps

The grave markers are completed and delivered, but I managed to get a couple of phots before they went -

Hi,

I am in the process of making a few more "tombs"; here's the progress so far -

They will go on my pals model railway layout, as before. The fronts are whitemetal castings from "Langleys" and the rest is scratch built. I may get some of the fronts for myself and make some tombs to keep.

Those are very nice indeed.
When you said "necropolis" railway I was thinking of the "unhallowed necropolis" expansion for the Unhallowed Metropolis RPG ( neo Victorian horror).
A railway to the grave would fit right in with my stuff..........
Excellent stuff, thanks for posting.
