This thread started as my own little project. But since so many cool ideas and warband-pics entered, I give it a try and start an open challenge here. So please feel free to post your own warbands.
I ve started this little project a little time ago...
Some of the joys of "Songs..." is that you can mix all creatures, monsters and heroes in a warband as you think it may fit. I wanted a more themed approach to my games.
I searched my leadmonutain and found some nice greeks... and started my first ancient-fantasy warband.
After a little playing around with the idea I came to my project-rules or guidelines (some more may follow)
-only miniatures from the leadmountain may be used, no new buying
-as little "GW-feeling" as possible
-find narrative gangs with a cool story
Edit: new rules, 15.04.:
-mix ranges wherever you can: it's not cool to do a gang out of the box (a helldorado Sarrasins-starter box may include superbe miniatures, but its dull to make a pure Sarrasins-gang out of it)...
-make the gangs too big: include spare models for variety and gimmicks for scenarioplay.
Edit: 25.04.:
-repaints are allowed: I ve a lot of half painted/old painted miniatures laying around, which I can't use in any rulesystem I usualy pay. Want to put them in good use again... ;)
okay, here is my first gang, the greeks:
...sorry for the quality of the pictures...
The mino and the centaurus are from my old RPG-times the hoplites are from a never started greek WAB-army. The hoplites shields are handpainted or old marauder ones I found in the pile...
Next are my conan-like barbarians. Cool old Copplestone miniatures wich I had for years in my lead mountain...
The big gry on is a kind of half-god or werebeast, don't know yet.
The first two gangs are perhaps to big to use completely in a standard SoBH game. But I have some variety and perhaps can use them for other systems...
The next gang is rather small though...
it's the elemental-Gang, consiting of the four elmentals and a summoner/scolar-type...
I had three cool elemnetals but could not find any suitable fire elemental in my leadmountain.
At last I used a WH-flamer deamon... ::)
Another gang came to my mind when I stumled across a big spider from LotR: the cult of the spider.
There are two spies, a few little spiders, a big fighting spider, a champion and "the mother" herself...
The latest gang in my arsenal are saxons for "Songs of Arthur and Merlin"
I had these cool GW-figures in my pile for quite some time, never know how to use them: too heroic for historical, too thin for WH-Fantasy...
I added two fantasy elements to the gang: a dwarf and a giant, just in case... ;)
...next on the list are some fantasy arthurians (high mediaeval) inspired by the Excalibur film...
...greetings from the mountain of lead,
DonVoss

Very nice! I like the Greek warband the most. Looking forward to seeing more.

-
These look nice. It's interesting to see how LotR GW miniatures fit in there.
-
All that from sorting through your lead mountain? Darn man, I bet its big enough to have its own micro climate, the lead mountain that is.
They all have very nice themes and looks to them, perhaps give us an idea of what stats you plan on giving them?
-
Very nice, Don
Where are the other elementals from?
-
Elementals are from...
earth: Confrontation
fire: GW flamer deamon
water: WotC, D&D 3rd edition RPG
air: helldorado Sarrasins
...thanks for your nice comments!
@YPU
Its not that big... ;)
Just the 1000 minis everyone collects over the years... :D
@stats
I am not sure at the moment: greeks as heavy inf. or medium etc.
The elements need a reconstruction, as I want them all at the same pointlevel. In the book they are quite differrent pointwise, and not at 300p together.

That is a great set of warbands. I am totally with you with regard to keeping the warbands themed in some way. If they arent themeds in some way then the whole exercise can become a dull min/max-ing exercise.
One of the very good things about SoBH is how it can make you look at your old miniatures in a new light. I painted up Elves and Lizardmen that I had had for years last year, all to play SoBH with.
Nice work :)
-
All brilliant stuff - really like the Greeks and the Spider Cult!
Made a little Citadel Norse warband meself - now looking out for a pet dragon for them (picked up on one of their saga holidays no doubt! ;)) so totally with you on adding a nice monster with each band! Putting a little back story with each group is half the fun and it can develop as you play!
-
Wow, all great stuff. Its really super how you could cull the archives and come up with these great warbands. And of course they are well painted.
-
Nice thread with some great minis and ideas.

Lovely set of miniatures. This is the way fantasy gaming *should* be at 28mm. :)

Fantasy wargaming is like that at 28mm. It's just the hobby of warhammer that isn't! ;)
-
lol, I'd put that down to ignorance, but I imagine you're joking. ;D
I'm looking forward to AA's new Darkestorme fantasy skirmish book. I have ordered it for salute and I'm wondering what it's like compared with SOBAH...
-
We're stealing this idea! Can't wait to go home and poke through my own backlog for some warbands!

Same here! All those Celtos barbarians and Sons of Kronos just got a new lease on life! Been wondering how to do my Slaine/Tain game, and get the right feel. May have just found it!
-
But if you do Slaine how can you resist breaking the rule and not getting the foundry Slaine?
I've been doing much the same thing and a hole bunch of citadel AD&D adventures have gotten a new lease of life along with a few monster warbands. I've started making a modular foam dungeon as well but only have a few rooms and corridors so far.
I did break and buy some other world kobolds though, they are great in SOBH.
Some super warbands there DonVoss.
-
Thank you again for your motivating comments.
And I would be very happy to see some of that "stolen idea" warbands... :)
@rule no. 1
For me a big part of the joy of the project is: rule no. 1
But if you make your own bands feel free to see it more as a guideline... ;)
I am not sure if this is the right place to post it, but it's a kind of "songs..."-gang anyway... ;)
While I searched the mountain I found enough robot-models for a "Songs of Mutants and Deathray Guns"-gang...
I promise to finish my arthurians to return to the fantasy-thing again... :D

It did not take me long to assemble a warband last night. Now I have to paint them! I discuss and show pics on my blog:
http://four-color-figures.blogspot.com/2010/04/song-of-blades-and-heroes-special.html
Thanks for looking!
-
@fourcolorfigs
A very promising start! Very good idea to use the GW-corsairs as a Sindbad-warband... :)
Cool, how you stick to rule No. 1.
I am looking forward to your project and the gangs to come.
DV
-
I like your Greeks especially. I took my son to see "Clash Of The Titans" the other day and I must say we both really enjoyed it. Not a classic by any means but good fun and, for me at least, an improvement on the original.
After that and seeing your figures, I'm tempted to do some Greek heroes and monsters of my own now, even though it's a subject I've never really been into before.
Shouldn't be too much expense for a couple of SBH warbands :D
-
But if you do Slaine how can you resist breaking the rule and not getting the foundry Slaine?
Rule #1 is for sissies. ;)
-
We're stealing this idea! Can't wait to go home and poke through my own backlog for some warbands!
Ditto. This is the inspiration I need to paint up some warbands for my own pile of minis
-
There are two new rules added to my project:
-mix ranges wherever you can: it's not cool to do a gang out of the box (a helldorado Sarrasins-starter box may include superbe miniatures, but its dull to make a pure Sarrasins-gang out of it)...
-make the gangs too big: include spare models for variety and gimmicks for scenarioplay... ;)
Today I finished my arthurian Gang. It's a high medivieval version of arthur and its knights.
Unfortunately I had to many figures for a standard Songs...-gang. But I just invented a new rule to the project, so its not a problem anymore... :D
The gang is sopposed to be the enemies of the saxons previously posted.
Sorry for the dark pictures (bad weather in Berlin...).
Here are the main characters of the story: lady of the lake, king arthur, merlin and of course the sword...
Some more characters...
I ve the "Songs of Arthur..."-pdf but have not studied it very much. So perhaps there are more things wich I have to add to the Arthur-part of the project.
DV
-
Lovely. Good idea using Cate Blanchett as the Lady of the Lake.
I know it's very fashionable to do "historical" Arthur these days in a Roman setting (which I think is cool too), but I really, really love the old-fashioned medieval romance version. When I was younger I devoured King Arthur stuff. Got the Penguin Mallory, translations of the various French Stuff, T.H. White etc (and played Pendragon for years - two generations of characters over about 40 game-years). This is very inspiring to me. Something I might have to look into myself.
What's in the Song of Arthur book, then? Worth getting, is it?
-

The SAM book is cute. It has three sets each of Rosters, Items, Warband Advances and Scenarios: a set for each of the High Medieval, Welsh King and Historical King settings. Basically its a small seperate supplement for each version of the story.
It has rules for jousting, questing and for high powered magic users. It obviously has stats for Merlin, the Lady of the Lake, Mordred etc. Scenarios like drawing the sword from the stone and the like are all included.
I havent played any of it but I found it to be a good read. It looks to me to be one of the most comprehensive SoBH supplements.
It certainly made me look at a whole pile of mounted knights that I have in a new light. Just the sort of thing that Ganesha games are good for really.
For the price of the PDF (eiither $8 or $5, I cant remember) it is well worth buying if you enjoy SoBH I reckon.

I like the use of the GW King as a Mallory-type Arthur, as well as the model of the lovely Cate.
Song of Arthur is well worth a look. Written by Dan Mersey (that should be recommendation enough) and has options for all the various "historical" and fantasy versions of the legend. As Cheetor says, at a fiver it's well worth it.
I'm going to try the "Mallory" version myself, stealing DonVoss's idea for using the LOTR figures, which by pure fluke I have duplicates of just waiting for the right paint job :D

I decided to go of the beaten path for this challenge and do some fantasy Inuit. I figure that these would work for Cthulhu type games as well. Paint to come soon. Maybe tonight if I get around to it.
full explanation on my blog.

Perfect for fighting mythical Viking types :D

What a great idea... :)
You must add an icerear as a were creature... :D
I like the setting: igloos, huskies, broke ice, piguines...
I want to see them painted...
Thanks for the inspiration.

Intriguing stuff - I always liked the ice barbarians in Joe Dever's Caverns of Kalte - kind of reminds me of them. :D

And love the "ice-ice-baby" tag for your blog.

Dynamite stuff, Joe! I also finished the Garden Party band!

Very nice work, your Excellency. And fantasy Inuit is such an untapped theme.

Cool ;) :D stuff!
These chaps would make a great opponent for Thorbjørn Nielsen's vikings!

The garden party is really good and a novel idea for a warband too.
The inuit are great: as has already been said, fantasy inuit is largely an untapped vein.
Great ideas :)
-
I love that garden party warband, Scott. That will make a great encounter in an RPG! I'm really digging how this challenge has motivated everyone to experiment with unorthodox fantasy themes.
-Joe
-
You know I have been thinking about this challenge and I realized I don’t have all that much of a lead pile. I’m not sure if I should be happy or sad about it. Sure I have some plastics lying around, but building an elven warband out of a GW wood elf box is hardly original is it now.
I guess I need to buy more cool miniatures even if I don’t have a use for it then.
-
Well, YPU, you are still a bit young by hobby standards, only being 20. I think by the time you reach my age, you'll have more stuff in your unpainted bins.
For example, I've had those Chronopia goblins for at least 10 years! I guess what I am saying is that the big backlogs come with accumulated years of collecting. For most people, anyway.
-
He, I guess that’s right. I keep forgetting I’m talking to old sods here. :D ;)
And Its not like I have had all that much funds available for wargaming for now, any money spend on minies stays there forever. (or one should hope so)
-
I realy like the way this thread had developed. Very inspiring to me. I like the Inuit and the garden-gang is realy cool... :)
I will cahnge the thread-titel to "Backlog-competion"... ;)
Here is my latest gang. The Undead, not as inspired as the latest warbands in this thread but its good for me to see these minis painted...
The citadel-skeletons are out of the deepest tunnels from under Mount Lead. I gave a friend 150 German Marks back in the early 90s when there was no internet (beside CERN) who traveled to england and told him to buy me some miniatures...
Okay, here is the gang.

Wow. A blast from the past! I like the band, especially the cohesive colour scheme.
-
Where can I find information about this competition everyone keeps talking about?
Pretty pictures all around! I love the inuits!
-
Where can I find information about this competition everyone keeps talking about?
In this thread... not a competition as such, but rather a challenge issued by DonVoss in his first post on this thread.
-
Thanks for the advise. I m not a native speaker, so I sometimes get things wrong.
I changed the thread-titel to "challenge"... :)
You can find all the details in the first post, but remember they are more guidelines then rules. Feel free to break them, to get the best result.
e.g. if you are such a lucky/young person to not own a lead-pile, feel free to buy the miniatures...
DV
-
Posted my Broo warband in "What I painted in April". No stats yet.
As a side note, if you can still find the broo minis somewhere I would suggest picking up a set. Only one less than perfect sculpt (left one in the bottom picture) despite all the badmouthing they got when they were released...
-
Started working on my own group, tough it comes from my own plastic hill, rather than lead. I know, I know, young people with their newfangled stuff.
I have some surplus plastics and a lot of left over mage knight miniatures, so I started fitting together groups and the first I came up with was the most original: undead.
-
Skellies look great - liking the orc one!
I've got some gnomes and a faithful, if stinky packhorse (no adventurer should leave home without one!) in the paint queue - couldn't resist them on ebay and thought they could stand in for dwarves in my Orc's Drift project.
Might have to push them up the queue and post them as a quirky little warband as well! >:D

I'm excited to see what you come up with! I too have some more plastic around to go with my extra metal backlog. I am trying to come up with a theme for a third warband, and I may do a beast master theme.
