Title: Wooden Scaffolding
Post by: d phipps on 13 April 2010, 07:29:09 AM
Recently have had a fascination with making terrain that gives players various levels to play on, so making some scaffolding seemed like a good idea. The other thing I really liked about doing this piece is that I think it can easily fit in a wide variety of settings. The miniatures pictured below are for scale… and for my own personal amusement.

I checked out some pics of actual wooden scaffolding on the interweb, but ultimately my goal was just to make something that looked somewhat close but was still a playable piece of terrain. We play a LOT of games, so playability is always very important to us.

I used natural bass and balsa wood, glued together, and pinned at some key points. The wood was stained prior to being put together, and lightly dry-brushed afterwards. Overall, I’m pretty happy with this one, but there are several things I’ll do differently on the next one… if I ever get around to it.

When I’m making a piece for the first time, I really don’t know how it’s going to turn out. The picture below shows some of my preliminary measurements, planning and sketches.

THANKS!

Very Nice :-* :-*
What colour do you use for the stain?
It is the detail in the bits and pieces like this that really brings your games to life.
Keep up the good work
Thanks

Very, very nice.

I can't help thinking about a small Italian plumber wielding a whacking great hammer ;)

Great... now I've got 8-bit video game music and sound effects stuck in my brain.  :P

Beautiful work, BTW - I'll definitely be borrowing this idea.

That's a very cool terrain piece.  Neat idea.

On a side note, I'd hate to have been the guy who had to haul those barrels up to the top platform.

Excellent work on a great idea.
I'll have to try making one myself.

Thanks

Very nice!  We have a couple of the scaffolds from MBA, but it'd be nice to make more (and cheaper, too!).  For one thing, I'd like to have a few different heights, and this looks like it'd be easy-ish to do at different levels.

What colour do you use for the stain?

Minwax's Golden Oak. It's one of the lightest shades they make.
