Title: SOBH Game
Post by: Erny on 17 April 2010, 03:13:40 PM
So here is a game of SOBH played out in my cellar. My adventures, mostly citadel AD&D against my brother with my undead 80's citadel and marauder with one AD&D Shadow. I'll let the pictures tell the story:

We gave up here, undead attacking across a ford was just never going to win...

I like the purple-clad Mordini. =)

Aye, river crossings are traditionally very tough - great looking game though   :)

Nice table, great minis!

I keep saying this but I think I need to put my paintbrush down and play with my little men too!

Poor old skellies!

And I just love these old Citadel models. Aren't those the "adventurers in three different kinds of experience level" models defending the village?

Cool minis and terrain... :)
Like the purple too.

I d like to suggest though to lay down the terrain a little bit more "skirmish-like": make it to interact more with the game. The river was a good idea, but some cover or a wood near the river might have helped to make a more balanced situation.

Anyway: it looks great... ;)

Makes me want to play a game right now!  Excellent stuff.  I played a few games of SoBH against a friend last year who decided to use some of his WHFB undead minis and plumped for loads of Zombies. With their 6+ Quality rating few made it away from the starting line, which was rather amusing (well, to me at any rate)...

We gave up here, undead attacking across a ford was just never going to win...

Should of brought a Bailey Bridge along!

You'll notice there is a group of zombies in the undead warband that don't really move all game. They even included a zombie lord to boost them to an effective Q5. All these unmoving points left the undead with a few skellies trying to cross the ford at reduced movement. The adventurers missile ability, mainly the elf archer but also the dwarf and human thieves meant that some of the skellies were always knocked down so they crossed one by one easy pickings for the fighters waiting the other side.

The ethereal shadow did fly across aiming for the weak human thief but was hit by the magic user.

To be honest perhaps the SOBH zombies are useless perhaps not, they don't play how I like zombies so the FF zombie rules could be the answer.

Oh and some of them are the 3 stage adventures, I have most of them but have only painted the first stage so far and only a few are show here. A few years ago as well so perhaps I should redo the first stage and actually do the other two at the same time.

Should of brought a Bailey Bridge along!

A Bailey Bridge made of bones would be such an awesome modelling project for an undead army!

Looks like it was a really fun game, some lovely old minis too. I've really got to give SoBH a go some time. Just wish I had a cellar!

Is this guy a citadel miniature or a marauder mini?

Citadel, Mordini of the nightmare legion.

Perhaps I should post the legion in my old minis thread.

The cellar is a bonus but when moving I always insist on some room for a gaming table, it is my only room in the house! I had planned to call it the dungeon but realised that sounded a bit wrong. At the moment with all the junk down there a 6'x4' table is a squeeze and only two players can be comfortable.

Wonderful.  :-* But I have to agree - Undeads in SBH have a hard time when they have to move.  lol

I'll be meeting my cousin for a SOBH one-off on wednesday. On the menu is 38 zombies (sorry Erny, plastic D&D prepaints) versus an intrepid band of adventurers defending a village. Will be interesting to see how many adventurers I can take out. I do not expect to win as the zombie player. =)

I'll post a bat rep with the results on my blog, and a note here as well.

We came to the realisation that perhaps the best way to use Zombies is to forget the Q boost from the lord, forget the lord actually. Just take tons of zeds, as you seam to be doing and roll just one die for each you'll fail loads but it won't be turn over, you should get a bunch, 6 or so a turn moving. Zombies has to be a numbers game.

I totally agree - and you can agree with you opponent, that you roll all the activation dice as one bunch, and then activate one from the front, then one from the back, then one from the front - and so on, until you moved a z for each actiovation rolled - that way you'll get that 'horde' movement feel.

And zombies ALWAYS look best in hordes, anyway  ;D

For their low points cost it has to be said Zombies are rather proficient in Combat (unlike Skeletons), but this is of course offset by their high Quality (I know that doesn't sound right) and the Slow and Short Move special rules.  It's generally quite simple for most opponents to dance around them.

Zombies has to be a numbers game.

Echoing everyone else: if you're going to take Zombies, takes loads of them!

A Bailey Bridge made of bones would be such an awesome modelling project for an undead army!

That would be very sweet!

What about collapsing an undead giant in the right place?  ;D
