Title: Jazz band from Black Cat Bases
Post by: Tsune on 27 April 2010, 01:41:35 PM
I think some of you can be interested, if I remember correctly, to know that Black Cat Bases has done a very nice Jazz Band.

I get a pack at Salute (a piano, drums, saxo and bass if I am not wrong, instruments and players). I was very surprised as it was the first time I knew they existed. Very nice minis.  :-*

If I am not wrong, they sold them in a pack and separately, but they had too some different instruments in packs.

That is really excellent news.  Do we know what the other individual instruments are?  You will need two different saxes, tenor and alto, of course and surely there will be a trumpet.  Is it too much to hope for that the figures have been modelled on actual artists?  Tall thin Coltrane, tubby Bird or Adderley?  Is there photo somewhere on the Net?

Didn't mummy tell you - "I want don't get!"

At least I know about your gypsy project so you are not coming over as a gay jazz fetishist

Woody Allen playing the clarinet would be cool too - as long as it's released on Oscars night!

The band has finally appeared both singly and collectively on the Black Cat site now: http://blackcatbases.com/index.php?main_page=products_new&disp_order=6&page=7

While the individual pieces may seem expensive you can get the whole combo for £12.00 which is very reasonable.

Needless to say I haven't seen the actual figures themselves in the flesh but I just have to say that I'm disappointed in the saxophonist.  Apart from the fact it's meant to be an alto sax it seems to be a very 'basic' representation of one.,  Thats a real pity as its not difficult to make a good looking sax at that scale.  (I speak as a sax player). But it looks like I will have to try out a few additions to the one they have done to make it "playable".

However, hopefully, if and when they expand the band they will do a better reprersentation of the tenor sax which just has to be their next figure - along with the also absolutely necessary trumpet player!  And maybe can we have african features on them?

Hi,

I am glad that most of you like the band, yes the instruments are representational. The fact is that most people would not painted every tiny detail anyway and having the sculptor sculpt a completely accurate scale model of each instrument would cost as much as the figure itself, therefore they would have to be twice the price. I am a double bassist myself and no the double bass is not complete in every detail but it is clear what it is supposed to be I thnk.

As we have said on the post announcing the release of these depending on how they sell will depend on whether we expand the range, no the tenor sax will not be next, we have a trumpet, 2 guitars and a soprano sax ready for the figures to be converted if these sell well, if not then we will simply release the instrument sprues I expect. Again different ethnis conversions depend on sales.

Thanks for the interest.
