It's great to see more and more Victorian buildings appear on this forum and its a good source of inspiration. I'm still working away at my own efforts at an alarmingly slow rate but thought I'd share my latest creation which is still very much WIP. It's based on a house my mate lives in so is sort of accurate:
The first step as usual, build the frame with ye olde foamboard:
Then add the embossed plastic brickwork (I'm still working up the patience to be able to score brickwork on to foam). The window frames are from the Grandt Line range and the doors are balsa wood. The only scratch built window frames are those on the rear extension:

For the roof tiles I followed the teachings of Gamer mac and Overlord and used scored cardboard:

I've started painting the brickwork and once done will glue the back yard wall in place, tidy some of the rough edges up a bit then add the guttering and other details. Hopefully in the next week or so..... ::)

Smashing, Thunderchicken! What colours and method of application did you use for the façade?
-
Really nice building Thunderchicken 8)
-
Very Wow!
-
Looking good indeed.
Don't shy away from scribing bricks though -it is surprisingly quick when you get into it.
-
Another one to follow.
Good stuff, :)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Hammers, I cake the whole facade in Vallejo Iraqi sand and then dry brush the brickwork with a dark brown masonry paint from the local DIY shop. The very nature of dry brushing seems to form slightly different shades of brown as you go along but I reckon one can get away with calling it 'weathered'. For the lintels and window sills, they get a dose of Iraqi sand but then I wash them with brown ink, haven't done that bit yet. (P.S I've got something here for you, I'll PM you the details when I've had a rummage inside later).
Svennn, the scoring technique is an inevitability, especially as I've got piles of foam good to go!
-
Cracking. Overlord will be very proud :)
-
Thats a great looking building. :-* :-*
Really like the colours you have used.
The windows look good, are they expensive? Where do you get them.
You must have a few building now, how about a group photo.
It seems we are going down the same route to end up with an Victirian urban board but the one problem I have not solved yet is what the buildings are going to be mounted on. I mean table. I have seen both plain grey flat boards used and cobblestone streets. What are you going to use. Any idea where I can get cheap cobble stone?

Wallpaper. Go into B&Q and have a look through their cheapo textured white wallpaper. There's a couple that are well suited.
As for the board layout, I'd go with the whole board covered in cobbles. Then have buildings and paving sections seperate. Remember, if you're going for Whitechappel type stuff then there aren't a lot of pavements.

(OK, but discretely. I don't want to reveal my penchant for and your design of latex club wear to just about everyone.) :)
-
Thats a beauty :D :D :D :-* :-* :-*
-
Cobblestones - in the local pound shop yesterday I saw some kits for mending chips in car indicator lights that were plastic sheet embossed in a decent cobble design. They came in clear, red and amber and the only reason I didn'y buy any was that they were self adhesive with a backing on. Ideal for sticking down I suppose but I thought less versatile. Pretty much like a cheap version of Wills.
-
fantastic work TC!!I love the finishing on the brickwork :-*Seems we've got a Victorian building boom going on lol
-
Grand stuff. I like the design. :)
-
Thanks again for the kind words chaps, very much appreciated. :)
I think Overlord will be proud up to the point where he discovers I've used embossed plastic for the brickwork. ;)
GM, I'm still pondering over board colour just like your good self. I'm thinking grey and cobblestone if the game is going to be completely urban and a light brown or beige if its going to be a mixed setting - similar to the boards Malamute uses. As Dewbakuk said there's is an endless supply of embossed wallpaper ath the DIY stores, the only thing that has stopped me from using it is the fact it's paper and I'm clumsy! I've got a roll on standby though ;). Bullshott uses this method so maybe he'll pop along and post a pic for you to give you an idea of the effect.
Antenociti's sell foam cobblestones which are cheap (I've got some of that) and QRF sells rubber cobblestone sections but they aren't cheap.
You'll find the windows on Antenociti's site too, search under Grandt Line.
I went for the brown/tanned brickwork because when walking around the East End of London I noticed most of the lower quality Victorian housing, factories and warehouses are built with brown bricks, maybe it was the cheaper option. A lot of the municipal buildings and posher housing is red brick. I'm only talking about the East End though so may be different elsewhere.
Hammers, I think we'd better keep our secret rather secret ;)
-
this is smashing!
how did I miss this?
now You nedd some 100 more for the whole neighbourhood? ;)
-
Aint half bad don't cha know. can't wait to see the whole ensemble. ;D
-
Really nice.
-
Look great!
-
You go! That is great!

Excellent build so far, very nicely done. 8)
I dont have an issue with using plastic card, its closer in scale than my inscribed efforts (& alot faster). I used it for my warehouse.
What did you end up using for the half-round stonework?

The colour looks spot on, and a nice variation from the regular red.

Very Nice Work!

Hehehe, you've got an idea there! I could be in league with the Raspberry Blower! lol
I took your advice for the half round stonework and ordered some 2mm half rods, they will do the job nicely. :)
-
Lovely job. :)
-
Back to cobblestones. My wifes cuttlebug machine that I use to do the rivets sheets has a cobble pattern also so if anybody wants some doing on card give me a shout. The die is 1/4 A4 (A6?)

Thought I'd post an update for y'all. I thought I had finished it but looking at the pics there's a bit more work to be done on the brickwork. Any fans of Jack the Ripper may appreciate the street name* ;)

That's great Thunderchicken. Super job.
-
Incredable job :oSome great finishing touches(Posters drain pies ect) :-*
-
They look sensational. :-*
Now you just need to crack on and build the rest of Whitechapel, pronto, pronto. ;)
I am looking forward to having a game with these. ;D
-
excellent, Neil
You'll make the next project with ease
-
Thanks chaps. Hopefully I'll have Whitechapel complete by about 2020 at this rate ;)
-
Cracking stuff, great finish on the brickwork. :-*
-
Yes the buildinbg itself is great but the rich colors on the paint job really take it to the next level as they say.
-
Looks just great and I'm looking forward to your next project. 8)

Top work there Thunderchief. Looks spot on. Kudos :)
-
:-* I hope it will travel ;)
-
VERY nice work. :o 8) :-*
-
Really, really nice.
-
Thanks again chaps. I'm getting more confident with the builds now so hopefully that will speed things up. I've started work on the pub so I'll post a WIP soon.

Just what I was thinking ;)

I bet you have to nip down to the corner every now and then to make sure you're getting it all just right. I know I would.
Really good work btw.
-
Great job. Fantastic really :-*
-
Great finish to the build. :-* :-* :-*
Details are great.
I love the rising damp on the walls.
Are the paths attached or just loose?
Where is the lamp post from?
-
You're getting very good at these. I love it :-* :-*
cheers
James

Dont worry, they will travel :). I make sure I've got storage for these projects before I put them together.

Hic! ;)
Gamer mac, the pavements are Wills York Paving stuck on to cork to give them a bit of depth. They're not attached to the building and in quite small sections so can be used for other layouts:
I keep meaning to buy the pavements from Outpost but will use up my stash of Wills first.
Thanks for all the latest feedback all. I need it as the pub is turning into a nightmare so I need the motivation; onwards and upwards eh!
-
What can I say, other than this is utterly brilliant.
Are you sure Overlord didn't build it and you just paid him? lol
I think he has competition if not!
I'd love to build some of my own. A step-by-step would go down a treat. :)

Thanks for the offer old chap but I'm on top of it now, I just like to make life difficult for myself sometimes. Keeps me on my toes!
-
Very nice stuff. Where is the street lamp from BTW?
-
Sorry for the delay getting back to you, I got the street lamps from Malamute. He had some spare from his own builds and I convinced him with the use of some rather splendid mind altering unctions that he should give them to me (Ssshhhhh, dont tell him).
