Title: Help! Looking for an unusual figure!
Post by: Major_Gilbear on 11 May 2010, 09:21:47 AM
Well, as the title says, I'm looking for an unusual figure - and I'm hoping all you helpful chaps (and chap-ettes?) will be able to steer me in the right direction!

Basically, I need a smallish figure (roughly 1" or 25mm high to the top of the head?) representing a crystalline entity. Such a model would look like is is literally made of animated quartz crystals or ice or similar, and would ideally have no weapons - "natural" weapons like claws etc aside, of course.

If possible, the figure would be metal by preference, but I'd consider anything else too if it was suitable. Whatever it is made from, I'd like it to be quite crisply sculpted, with sharp edges and points.

Thanks in advance! :)

This is just a suggestion and may not interest you as a project but.....

You can buy a piece of galena or a similar crystalline form (or enough like genuine crystal not to matter). Even pure rock salt would be easily available in large cheap lumps (try a hardware or produce store that has horses in the district). It can be smashed easily and with a bit of creativity you can make exactly what you want.

Finely crushed blue metal or slate can also do the job with some creative painting.

On the other other you could just play old Debbie Harry songs as atmosphere ("Heart of Glass")

I swear there's some models like this called 'shards'. I forget the range though.

Yeah they are the shard, from the VOR range, but having a look, I doubt they are what you want.

The Reaper Miniatures Crystal Golem? Might be a bit large by 25mm standards, but still...

Dark Age Ice Elemental might suit your needs:

That reaper one is nice. But by no means anywhere near as nice as the dark age one. Really nice.  :)

Hmm, well some good advice and some good finds so far, thanks!

I like that Dark Age one, but it is pretty big. I need something smaller really... What about models from other scales? Could a similar figure designed for 15mm exist? Because if so, that'd make it the right size for me.

Looking at the Reaper Golem also reminds me that I did look for rocky/stone-types of models too, but still found nothing.

I'd really prefer to buy something than sculpt my own too, mostly because I get too finicky about my own work and I simply don't have the time to satisfy myself with my own efforts. After all, that lead mountain isn't going to paint itself! :(

Sorry for double-posting, but I think I've found something along the lines I was after:
It is from Privateer Press' Monsterpocalypse game, and looks kinda crystalline and also the right sort of size... But I can't tell from the photo on the PP site what its details look like. Does anybody have any better pics of one?

Or better suggestions? I'm still looking!  ;D

//Edit//

I just found this:

Is it the same thing? It's going to be repainted, so colour's not important. But I can't tell if they are the same model or...?

If I recall correctly, HeroClix has a few Marvel X-men Iceman figures that might suit your needs, browse the other figures in different genres as there are simply a plethora of interesting characters available.

Unfortunately, I don't know anything about the height, but the Shard were part of Vor the Maelstrom.  Now available from Iron Wind Metals.

You might try searching for Vor or Shard images.  You might find them potitioned next to some of the other Vor minis.  Vor does tend to be tall though.  More like 30mm or so for humans.

Otherwise check fantasy ranges for crystal and ice golems.

Black Tree Designs (if you dare) do Krotons from Dr Who - might be a bit scifi though...
