Hello, after seeing all your post about cars in a "Mad Max" atmosphere I looking for a rules for use a Hot Wheels car conversion. I found the "Warlands" rules, from Aberrant Games and I bought many cars in the nearest papershop. I never painted and tunning cars and for me the experience are very pleasant.
Only, I have a doubt, if I put a base is more easy to transport and not seems a toy, but without base are more realistic on the wargame table.
Next, I show the first cars finished. Thanks you!!!!!! ;)

Try taking a look at www.plasticsoldierreview.com
Lots of possibilities with 1/72 scale plastics (also easy to convert).

Nice! More inspiration, and more to motivate me to get my rear in gear and get modding and painting. Great stuff!
What are the 'Warlands' rules like?
-
Warlands is pretty cool! New game, final rulebook still on the way, but the PDF is totally worth buying. I'm really not all that thrilled w/ the resin cars, esp. the ones that came w/ the box set, a bit over-priced for the quality you get. I'd like to keep supporting the game, so I'm hoping things will improve model-wise as they progress.
Rules are fast and fun.
Over-all, great game!
-
Thanks, Chris - and it's Matchbox/Hot Wheels scale, isn't it? Now I'm beginning to understand why you think 20mm might work for me....
I'll check out the website - I'm interested on seeing what sort of models on foot they have!
-
They don't have much for models on foot....
And I agree that their resin cars are a bit overpriced, and aren't really all that good.
Seeing what people can do with Hot Wheels is amazing.
They do look much better w/o a base however!
-
Nice work. They all look great.
-
Very nice looking vehicles. I like the weathering effect.
As for bases, I think the cars look better on the table without them. But that's just my preference. If bases are used, rounding the corners on them might look more "natural." There's nothing that says they have to be square corners, unless the corners are used to measure turning and firing angles.
PD: Do you know any post-apocaliptic miniatures in 20mm for use with the cars?
I believe the Stan Johansen web site has Road Warriors in 20mm.
LINK: Stan Johansen web site. (http://www.stanjohansenminiatures.com/Road.htm)
-
Thanks, Supervike - disappointing. It would have been nice.
Thanks, m4jumbo, for the link. So at least there ARE 20mm "Car Wars" type models on foot out there.
And as for basing - I think they provide the opportunity to add something to the look of the car when it's being photographed, but I tend to prefer vehicles on the table without them - just my preference, though! I'd prefer minis without bases, but they'd never stand up!
-
I think irregular have a 20mm 'riot' range, which could be used as post apoc stuff. :)
-
Thanks, Supervike - disappointing. It would have been nice if I had listened to my good buddy Chris for once instead of going on about my silly 28mm scale thingy.
So at least there ARE 20mm "Car Wars" type models on foot out there? Maybe someone kind to me will send me a small selection of Dark Future minis in 20mm and a matchbox car? Hmmm...
:D
-
lol lol lol
Nice one, Chris!
-
lol
A double-post, because I'm still laughing!
I was thinking too (not while laughing - that sort of multi-tasking is just plain dangerous), what sort of 20mm terrain is there out there? I'm guessing there might be plastic kits, or companies that produce resin buildings and such. Obviously, a car wars type board shouldn't be too cluttered, but there should be something, and if there's a quick way to do it, that's what I might go for. A desert-like, post-apocalyptic landscape with bits of asphalt running to nowhere, and the odd semi-ruined building or two. That's the sort of board I have in mind. Lots of wide open space to let players drop the hammer and drive like hell!
-
I found these forums searching around the other day.
http://s1.zetaboards.com/Post_Apoc_Wargames/index/
The terrain section has some great ideas and a great tutorial on making pools using cd's. I'm really getting into using cd's as bases for terrain. They don't warp when you put stuff on them and most of us have heaps lying around.
Cheers.

ace vehicles!
I remember Italeri or Revell has a 1/72 Vietnam range that could work
-
Thanks, former user - so is 1:72 about the same as 20mm?
-
Thanks, former user - so is 1:72 about the same as 20mm?
Pretty much - if you measure from a 1/72 miniature's soles to its eyes, it's just about 20 mm.
Plastics tend to be slimmer and more naturally proportioned than metals, although same height, though.
-
Excellent, Argonor - thank you! That means that 1:72 plastic terrain kits would work pretty well for 20mm post-apocalyptic. All I'd need is to "distress" them a bit, and add a few futuristic gubbins.
-
yep
especially the hundreds of railway model kits
-
That means that 1:72 plastic terrain kits would work pretty well for 20mm post-apocalyptic.
Absolutely! Also the vehicles/tanks/planes can be used as wrecks.
-
Model Railway kits, former user? - You mean HO scale, or is it another scale that I don't know of? HO would be VERY handy. Lots of HO plasticville stuff on eBay.
And Argonor - great idea on using 1:72 planes, etc., as wrecks. As long as it blocks line of sight, looks good on the table, and can be crashed into, it's going in my game! Great idea - now all I have to do is hope that I can paint my cars as well as Criamon's beauties at the start of this thread - sorry, Criamon, for highjacking it a little! This is great stuff, though!
-
Caesars modern militia would work well as post apocalyptic types.

HO is 1:87-1:76, depending on the manufacturer and model generation.
Old railway models used to be small, new ones are sometimes that large that You can even use some for 28mm by the height of the doors
-
Thanks, P_Clapham - they do look useful!
And thanks, former user - that actually explains a lot. I've got Plasticville O scale stuff in the past, and most of it is on the money (more or less) for 28mm, although a couple of pieces I've got have been way off. If the same sort of variation is there with HO, that makes sense.
-
You have to take a miniature with You, open the box and check the door size
-
Thanks for the great number of replys xDDD and for the link. The caesar modern militia miniatures are very interesting. :D
I hope to finish more cars tomorrow and I show the photos. ;)
-
Tengo ganas de verlas, Criamon! Looking forward to seeing them! This thread has provided some great info and ideas, so keep the cars coming!
-
I'm liking these conversions, especially the weathering on the paint job.
I suddenly have an urge to start modding full size cars and living the roadwarrior life :) Although that might take more time and money (and skill) than I have available.
For now I will just use these as inspiration.
-
Hi ! this afternoon I finish more cars for the game, and I take off the bases at the first.
The problem is that tunning the Hot Wheels cars is a drug xDD and now I go to the papershop to buy more cars. ;D ;D

PD: The next saturday we will play the first Warlands game in the club and try to make photos.
Thanks!!
-
Really excellent stuff - great weathering, nice choice of colours, and that pick-up (of something similiar) with the flag at the back is fantastic!
And you're right, Criamon, it IS addictive. When the cars cost so little, it's difficult to stop yourself from buying more!
Looking forward to the game report!
-
they look good!
I especially like the german army Porsche with the toilet seat on top ;)
-
Warlands does look interesting. I like fast playing games (Carwars dragged way too much IMHO). Does it use a lot of dice? How long does a "usual" game last time-wise?
Ummm... I think I'd just keep converting Matchbox & Hot Wheels cars for the game.
Okay to make painting suggestions? Dirty up the sides of the tires, the rims of the wheel wells, and the front of the sides/fenders where they meet the grill and hood. These are the area that always look nasty after I do some off-rode fun. And in the wasteland it is arid and dusty. It gets into everything!
"Porsche with the toilet seat on top" - I like that one too... And the truck with the American Civil War flag! Yeeeehaaaaaa!!! The south rides again ya'll!!!!
-
How does Dark Future play? I downloaded the free pdf from GW's site yesterday, and I think I can reconstruct the road tiles needed from the diagrams in the rules - but I won't bother if everybody thinks the rules are utter rubbish...?
-
@Argonor - other people may have had different experiences, but I've always found with Dark Future that the track is a little restrictive. A favourite tactic of a few players in the club was to have the heaviest weapon they could pointing backwards (or on a turret), and in the first turn make certain to roar ahead, shooting at the nearest vehicle behind and (often) dropping smoke. In fact, it's been so long since I played last that I'm already vague on the rules, but I remember that turret mounted heavy weapons + first turn = early kill.
Of course, I could just have been playing it wrong!
-
Hmmm... ok....
-
But don't let that put you off, Argonor! I'm notoriously bad at every game that I play, so it could just be that I didn't understand the tactics! It's still a lot of fun - it's just that after playing Battlecars for years as a teenager, I really love the open spaces you can have to roar around, and I'm eager to recreate that. And as I said, other people may well have had different experiences with Dark Future, if, unlike me, they actually made it to the third road tile!
-
I just wondered - I think I could more easily use the Nuclear Renaissance rules (which are simple, but effective) for some car crazyness..
-
We have bikes that fit that scale
Our first gang is more Valiant 1/72 scale, but we will sculpting some 20mm DF scale soon.
Our range do fit nicely with hit wheels and matchbox vehicles nicely
Check out the comparison shots here.

Always did enjoy The Road Warrior... :D
-
Fab work!
Reminds me of the stuff I did for Dark Future ages ago -- so long ago I don't even have pics of them...
-
I will point out that, since this thread was started, even Hot Wheels has put out some ready-for-combat cars. Course, the weapons need serious repaint, but the weapons ARE there.

Stan Johansen makes a series of 20mm PA figs in 20mm under the Road Rage rang. He even has weapon bits to stick on the cars. Just doa search for Stan Johansen Miniatures and he should pop up.
-
Are there cave paintings? ;) lol lol
Ha ha haa...
It was the age before cheap digital cameras.
I didn't own a decent camera and I couldn't afford film anyways, consequently much of my early work has not been photographed.
Later I dug up part of it for a photo shoot, but the Dark Future stuff wasn't included. Probably because it was a separate set sitting in its own box.
