I'm looking to put together a unit of the New York Independents:
Am having a major problem finding either a compatible figure, not even one with conversion potential from AWI, Napoleonic and other ranges. Size-wise, my collection is mostly Conquest, then Perry, Eureka and some Crusader.
Has anyone else put together a unit of these?
Does anyone have any suggestions (including conversion possibilities, as I'm expecting to be able to substitute with 'Brown Bess' and tricorn where necessary)?
Cheers. :)
EDIT = title change

Of course you already know about the Eureka provincials. The only down side to putting gs leggings on them is that the Eureka figures are a bit "stiff". I like them and have used 24 for my 60th regiment (and have another 24 to use as either VA or PA provincials eventually), but I wouldn't want too many of them in an F&I force due to the lack of poses.
What do you think of using Eureka's "ragged continentals"? A couple of the Marblehead figures might work also.

For that matter I suppose you might be able to use some other continentals from companies like Perry. The main difference is the leggings.

Basically, the same coat as the rangers in the Galloping Major FIW RAN 1 pack, with a tricorne substituted for the cap:

probably not the solution you're looking for Silent Invader - but you did ask lol

Good call GM. Any chance you'd eventually convert those greens? (tricornes, lose the belly boxes) There is a real dearth of suitable provincials.
-
I've had a quick look through the Perry listings and maybe AW74 and AW75 would do, Hesse-Cassel jaeger figures http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html (http://www.perry-miniatures.com/index2.html)
You'd have to add the gaiters, but I'm assuming they are for small scale games.

Hi Aaron,
I will be doing various Provincials, so I don't see why not.
Cheers,
Lance

Have you looked through the Foudnry syw prussians and russians there may be something there

How about these

Whatever you decide to do please keep us updated. I love watching labors of love like this. I'm still looking for my damned manual of arms. ???
By the way, if you look at the May issue (#271) of Wargames Illustrated there is a nice history and scenario for the Battle of Sideling Hill which took place down the pike from my place in 1756. I only mention it because it is an interesting article and not at all because it features photos of some of my miniatures. ;)

The Bess looks good overall, but is perhaps a bit short (?). I really need to find time to get the green stuff out and try some sculpting again. I gave it a shot a couple of years ago and found it enjoyable, but my Iroquois looked more like a bad Star Trek creature than anything human.
My friend who wrote the Sideling Hill article tells me he is working on another one based on the rescue/retaliation effort the settlers launched against the Indian town of Kittanning later in that year. I've offered to lend out whatever he needs again. My figures came out looking much better in the article than they ever do in my pathetic photo attempts!
-
Is it really? Amazing how the eye can perceive things differently just on background or context. I thought the Eureka Bess looked pretty good. As is I'd say it would work well for a "Jager" style Christian Springs rifle.
-
Looking good! A bit late now, but some of Eureka's new SYW Saxons look like they might work for conversion fodder also. The cuffs look too large and the pompoms need trimmed off the tricorns, but otherwise I think they are pretty close.
-
Looks promising! Very useful as generic later F&I / Pontiac's rebellion troops in general.
-
Excellent stuff, that recent Brown Bess looks great, the figure is taking shape too. :)
-
Looking great! :-*
The thought of sculpting scares me to death.
I have use for those beautiful tricornes - any chance of making them available?
-
Might be too late for you, but check out our new French Regulars. Some of the might be good for you, with only minor modifications.

Looking good Si, keep it up :D

-
That is really progressing nicely! Will they all have tricorns or will you include some cut-down round hats and jockey caps for variety?
-
I'm sure I'll be able to make them available idc, tho I need to make more progress with this project first. ;)
I will hold u to that! :D
-
Looking at it, I would take some more out of the lower cheek to give some definition in that area, but otherwise, looking good :)
cheers
James

Bibblywibblywobbly is right about the cheeks, if you can hollow them out a little, make his cheekbones more pronounced you are almost there. He's looking great.
-
I'm not wobbly ;D

Looking good! I hate to make any criticisms, but in something looks a bit off in the facial profile. I think the nose may be a bit too flat. I think your eyes might be a bit too wide also, but that may be a trick of the lighting. The rest of it looks very well executed and crisp - right down to the shoe buckles!
-
I think your efforts are great, as I mentioned before, sculpting is a whole new game.
Give them bigger honkers and they'll look just like bought ones!
-
I hadn't noticed it before, but the Bess does look a lot better after your whittling.
-
The photos came out alright for me at least.
It really is impressive work SI :)
-
Looking good! I know you intend to use them for the NY troops, but they really would work well for a range of units. I'm impressed with all of the fiddly detail you captured on the musket! :o
-
Amazing effort - casting your own miniatures - WOW!
Damn the air bubble! Must be frustrating. >:(
Still looking longingly at those tricorns.
-
I would have said this is nice work but you're way beyond that point… lol
Casting your very own figures and scratch building all those scenic elements sure take a great deal of commitment. As for the air bubble, I think that tim in saskatoon cast his own figures too for a WWI project… Maybe you can ask him for advices?
-
Very nice, really well done,
I appreciated very much proportion of figures you Are doing.
Hope to see painted soon. :-*
-
Hope this logging of my little project isn't proving too tiresome. Wink Smiley
Not at all, it's really good to see so much devotion in a project. An inspiration to us all :)
A small suggestion, would it be worth taking a small needle file to the metal master and making a bit more of a join between the belts etc and the clothing. In some parts they seem to blend a bit too much (if that makes sense)
Otherwise, looking good :D
cheers
James

You have certainly put a lot of time and effort into this. Glad to see it is paying off and the air bubble wasn't too big an issue.
-
Terrific stuff, you must be really pleased with the way they are coming on. I can't wait to see a unit painted up of these. :)
-
Looking good!
-
They are terrrific :-* and the boat looks good too, you have been busy :)
-
Sorry to hear about the back. I thought you'd been a bit quiet. The NY troopers are looking good. I can't wait to see them painted!
-
Great stuff SI. I really admire your dedication to the period.
Glad to hear you're on the mend :)
-
Very nice work! Keep it up I loved this thread.
-
They certainly look good enough to me although I would perhaps use a slightly darker shade of green for the base colour of the coats.
cheers
James
-
Very nice! I'm looking forward to hearing more about the game you are working up to.
-
I like 'em a lot. The fact that you sculpted, then cast them and now painted them is a marvel in itself. Top stuff :)
-
Cute figures. They look like "classic toy soldiers"... I also like their uniform color. Nice work 8)
-
@LTD
Somehow I seem to have missed those. They are nice though I suspect the shouldered arms might make for a more difficult conversion, bearing in mind that metal will need to be hacked from around the waist to create the external belt. Thanks very much for the suggestion. :)
@Aaron
Rolling updates will, of course, continue! ;) No promises as to frequency or speed of progress though! Still working on the 'Brown Bess' and tricorn masters - the musket started with a bayonet but I've since had a change of mind and removed it. Some wip:
Thanks also for flagging the magazine article as I would have missed it. I will be sure to pick up a copy from town tomorrow (I see they also have an article on the East Essex - my local regiment).
