Title: Prussian Warmachines
Post by: Laflin and Rand on 23 May 2010, 12:31:19 AM
Say you're painting a couple of steam tanks for your Prussians. What color would you make them? I can't decide.

Prussian Blue? Battleship Grey?

Seriously though I think I would take the actual shape into account and whether I could add insignia etc. I would be thinking if they could have flags too.

Which models are they? or are scratchbuilds?

They're Ironclad minis. One's the walker and the other is the one that looks like an A7V. There's plenty of room for cross insignias.

I was thinking either Prussian Blue or Battleship Gray too but it seems a bit boring to me. I don't know. I was also contemplating how much weathering I should give them. If it's right at the beginning of a campaign, I can see an unweathered blue. If later in a conflict, I might consider a camouflage pattern.

Whatever the overall colour make sure that you augment it with plenty of brass fittings and a dash of red lead.

I would take a cue from the paint schemes of the ships of the Prussian navy and Aeroneff fleets.  In VSF colourful is more fun than boring grey and camo designs.

I am just about to paint the Ironclad tank for my German force, grey is currently what I am thinking but would be interested in any other ideas  too. I am trying to give each of my forces a separate colour for there tanks and machines.

I would use grey too but with a hint of blue in it and I would add a huge Balkenkreuz like the ones on WWI airplanes.

depending on the shape I would consider a dreadnought disruptive pattern in prussian blue/grey/white

I painted my prussian armour as follows:

1 - Base colour = dark grey
2 - WW1 aircraft cross decals
3 - Dry brush successive coats of weathering (makin sure each coat has dried before adding the next). Brush very lightly if you vehicles are mainly going to be in the European theatre or equivalent. Use heavier brushing if you want desert/arid effect. All colours GW/Citadel:

Snakebite Brown
Fortress Grey
Desert Yellow
Bleached Bone.

Boy howdy! It looks more than just okay in my book.  :o

I think I'm going to go with Prussian Blue folks. Thanks for the thoughts!
