Title: Maps of France (18th Century)
Post by: SgtPerry on June 20, 2007, 12:57:45 PM
Here is a very intesting link with old maps of France from the Cassini family, painted between 1750 and 1790. There are 181 small maps (from the french national library). Each map is a 5400x3600 image with a size of about ~5 MB.

Thanks, Olivier! These kinds of maps are always invaluable when trying to write swashbuckling games!

Now that is awesome and quite handy to plan out a campaign!

Edit: It looks like the map is oriented so that East is the top edge of the map. That threw me for a minute.

Oh hell yes, the fortifications of Belle Isle! (http://cartocassini.org/galerie/picture.php?/345/category/iles)

But I can't find where Porthos died. What kind of map of Belle Isle wouldn't show Porthos' rocky grave?

Note to British sailors attempting to use this map: Those obstinate Froggies didn't accept the Greenwich Meridian until 1911, so don't be surprised if you find yourself late for your afternoon tea engagement in English Harbour.

Ooh, lovely!

I was a bit thrown off by the tilted cardinality first when I saw it. Distances and proportions must be off with a bit to, right?

Hmmm... I could take this to a printer and have them print it onto quality paper. I a couple of prints of the area from my visits to Virgin Isl. and Jamaica but they are not as nice as this.

The cave should be around Locmaria (Loemaria on the west part of the island).

The cave isn't marked, but I found Locmaria. Along the way I found any number of places marked "Batterie" and now I think the place should properly be called "Ille de Vauban."

I need Plynikes to undertake one of his Intelligence Missions to Belle Isle. Perhaps the excitement of a mission will rouse him from his pining for Methodist Ministers armed with Lewis Guns in 28mm.

Another good source for historical maps is the "bibiloteca nacional digital". The national library of Portugal.
You have to look under "cartografia", of course...

Oddly enough I shall be in something like that neck of the woods in August. Unfortunately our current itinerary will take us no closer to Quiberon Bay than St. Nazaire.

But it's not set in stone, so you never know.  :)

Stop it! I have work to do! I have things besides dreaming seafarer's adventures on the edge of Portugal!
