Having been lured into dabbling with the Dark Arts by Phreedh and selling my soul (... well swapping a few minis...) in a Faustian bargain with him for some great undead minis among other things, I've ended up starting a little side project! :o
http://teasgettingcold.blogspot.com/2010/05/i-spy-with-my-bulging-long-dead-eye.html
As I'm a mere initiate in the forbidden arts of necromancy I've only got one skellington done so far...

Don't worry though - haven't forgotten the green ones!
Having said that I'm off to resurrect my old plastic skeleton horde... >:D
-
What a fantastic job! I love the eyes.
-
Eye-popping =) Funny how the grass is always greener on the other side... I've got a hankering to paint some orcs. ;)
-
Wow, awesome!
You've really captured the feel of that mini. Nice and gritty and the eyes are spot on, I love them! :)
-
Cheers fellas - he was fun to paint and I couldn't not make those googly eyes a feature! Might give them a coat of gloss varnish to make them glisten!
Funny how the grass is always greener on the other side... I've got a hankering to paint some orcs.
Jump in mate - the waters lovely, if a little smelly! ;)
-
Simply love what you've done with that Roy Eastland skeleton, darling. On the subject of Eastland skeles, does anybody know how many he sculpted in all? I've got a White Dwarf (#133) which shows five, yet I've got one that doesn't appear amongst them. A scouring of The Stuff of Legends hasn't produced any results so I'd be grateful for any information. Cheers.
-
Cheers Funghy, old chap! :D Distended, bloodshot eyeballs are this season's thing don't you know!
Afraid I couldn't see anything much on Mr Eastland's skellies either...
-
Thats, I found a few bits for you (only 2 or 3 minis) in the loft at my parents. I'll send you a PM. ;)
-
Cheers Rob - most kind!
-
No problem, patience may be key though!!! lol
-
Well the Book of the Dead has made good bedtime reading and with my newly improved necromantic skills quake before me as I unleash....
... my second skeleton!!! >:D

Just a little something I whipped up in between watching paint dry on those dwarfs and mules!
Waiting in the limbo that is my pait queue are another 9 warriors, 5 horsemen and 3 archers (I can hear you Phreedh rubbing your hands together! ;))
More mutterings here - http://teasgettingcold.blogspot.com/2010/06/dem-bones-dem-bones.html
-
Love the first pic, very dynamic pose and all! Looking forward to see what else you will make out of these old plastics. Great kit!
-
Cheers mate - this one was actually assembled by my younger 14 year old self and has survived the years of being bashed around in a box!
Got 9 other warriors who just needed arms sticking on and 5 horsemen who were reunited with their mounts. Did you see my comment about skeleton archers on the blog? ;)
Wish I still had the wheels and other bits that fell off the chariot though... :'(
Probably going to wait until Baron Kraust and the other skeleton captains arrive (that Chaos Sorcerer and other baddies you're sending me!) before I do much more - got over 50 odd orcs to paint yet not to mention the poor unfortunates they're going to crump! :o
-
Well here's another lost soul for the band - a plastic armoured skellie also from the genius citadel skeleton army box - I loved how the breast plates, helmets and greaves came separately so you had loads of flexibility in posing your horde!
This is another mini that I put together many years ago and has somehow survived to the present day - obviously back then I wasn't too worried about the physics involved in wielding a two-handed scythe and shield at the time but hey-ho! Mind you if I was going for realism not sure I'd be painting up walking skeletons in the first place! ;D
Enough blather - pics-
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Undead/P6120184.jpg)
See how my photographic skills are improving - placed the shadows cast by the building's archers to form an ominous and shadowy dark skull against the background of the pic... not really but just noticed it looking at the pics again! ;D
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Undead/P6120190.jpg)
... and the warband so far!
But wait could that be the dread shadow of the baron himself looming across the right hand side of the building?
Actually no - happy coinicidence again - the Baron's still in his dettox bath! :D
http://teasgettingcold.blogspot.com/2010/06/any-any-any-old-iron.html
-
Awesome stuff. I really need to look through that stuff...
Too much stuff going on!!! >:(
-
Hehe, the shadows did turn out pretty neat in the pics. =)
What will you use Baron Kraust's gang for btw? Just random mayhem or secretely mustering for adventures of a lichemastery type? =P
-
Cheers Rob - no rush for your sort out, although I'm intrigued as to what goodies you may find therein!
What will you use Baron Kraust's gang for btw? Just random mayhem or secretely mustering for adventures of a lichemastery type? =P
Hmmm dunno yet - read the McDeath stuff last night - great stuff! - I'll let you know when I've perused Lichemaster.
Probably be just random mayhem in the forseeable future - got a bit of a back story developing for Baron Kraust...
and he wants revenge....
Mwa hahahahahaah! >:D
-
Really good stuff Thantsant!
I like that you've chosen to go with dark colours :)
-
Thanks Silversixx - I like a nice gritty look!
Now apologies for the terrible picture quality (phtos taken with the wife's camera phone - left my camera at work! >:(). Normally I would wait till I got my camera back and do it properly but having spent a considerable amount of time trying to get the phone to talk to the computer yesterday I felt I needed some kind of closure! ;D
Anyway the latest addition to the warband and what any self-respecting necromancer, hellbent on vengeance on the weakminded fools who banished him, should have- a giant skeletal Cyclops! >:D

Better pics to follow!
-
You have to love the Grenadier Skeletal Cyclops fella! Excellent work, as usual Thantsants. Might have to get one for the Undead warband I'm currently building (of which I'll post pics once they're painted)!
-
That is very cool. I'm loving following this thread.

Good job on a nice model, Steve! Did you have it tucked away since earlier or were you inspired by Hackett's cover?

-
Thanks all - will get the camera back tomorrow and post some proper pics!
Might have to get one for the Undead warband I'm currently building (of which I'll post pics once they're painted)!
Thanks old boy! Looking forward to seeing your lot when they're done!
Did you have it tucked away since earlier or were you inspired by Hackett's cover?
Hadn't noticed him on the cover actually being completely unobservant! I got on ebay last week - a purchase for which I blame you entirely! ;) Might have to take you up on those skellie archers soon although not sure I'll be able to do anything with them what with Orc's Drift and all!
In fact the ranks of Baron Kraust's host of baddies have swelled somewhat - on top of the plastic skeleton warriors and horsemen I also have acquired three wights. Joining Kraust in the vat of Dettol are my old marauder chaos thug archer regiment, an old warthog beastman and a rhino beastman, and waiting in the wings to further bolster his Chaotic followers are some Red Redemption cultists, a two headed beastman (guy with the snake hand), a minotaur centaur and a couple of demonic familiars! Not forgetting the Ogre and armoured skellies Phreedh sent me this force is certainly shaping up into something to be reckoned with...
I'd better get on with some painting! o_o
-
Here's some better pics finally! Now I must stop dabbling in the Dark Arts and get on with my militia for Orc's Drift!

The paintjob is great!
But I can't really decide if I genuinely like the mini, or if its one of the car crashes where you just can't stop watching (and admire if you're a very weird person).
-
Haha - he is a bit larger than life! ;)
Know what you mean - personally I think I'm one of those weird people... ;D
-
So another little addition to the warband...
I thougt a little ethereal host wouldn't go amiss and couldn't resist this chap on ebay!
Possibly the daftest mini I've painted but I do love it so! Shame the rest of the C series night horrors tend to go for fairly high prices...
-
You should've sculpted a pointy cone on his head and called him Klanner, the unfriendly ghost. =) I agree, the mini is a bit on the silly side. Nice one! =D
-
Cheers Phreedh - actually I feel a sudden compulsion to look for Great Dane minis and a scruffy looking chap with a green shirt... ;)
-
Great Dane minis and a scruffy looking chap with a green shirt... ;)
Zoinks! It's that creepy lead collector again! ;)
-
Like... run Scoobs! ;D

I think you might find just that, here:

Haha - thanks Argonor - I think I've seen a rather fine set of these guys painted up by Matakishi - including a rather nice Mystery Machine! 8)
-
Your output is relentless Thants! :o Keep it coming tho, good stuff!
-
Cheers Hetz!
Pics of the Baron himself to come later if I get time tonight...
-
And so enters the Baron himself...

I've written a bit of background for him on the blog - afraid it turned into a bit of a novel! ;D
http://teasgettingcold.blogspot.com/2010/07/disdain-sanity-and-scholarship-loftiest.html
Thanks to Phreedh by the way for introducing me to the Baron!
-
That turned out nice! =) Love the picture where it looks like he's prodding the bulgy-eyed skel! lol
-
Haha!
You there! Go fight! >:(
-
This is COOL.
I love that you have kept the armour boney, which makes the model blend in with the rest, instead of making it some metal shade. Lovely mini it is, too!
-
Lovely mimi it is, too!
I agree, and sort of regret trading it to Thants... then again, it would just be in the basement unpainted. Better it's put to good use!
-
I love that old Chaos Warrior. It was actually one of the first minis I bought (than I lost it somewhere over the years) :)
-
That's a beautiful paintjob on the Baron. The thing that caught my eye was the leather on the sword grip. It reminds me of the worn leather on the grip of an old tennis racket I had. Very realistic.

Cheers felaas!

Sorry Phreedh! I promise he'll see some action this week if its any consolation! ;)
Especially as I hve another 6 skeleton warriors ready for him - pics to come later...

Reckon he could show Murray a thing or two! >:D

Thanks Argonor - it fits in with his back story that I concocted to link the chaos and necromantic leanings the character has! Its on the blog if you fancy a bit of bedtime reading!
-
That guy looks awesome!
I love the bone armour and the purple clothes. The handle is nicely painted too, I like how it isn't just one shade of brown.
Only thing, is he chipped on his head? :(
-
the baron is an epic piece of work, the others are great too but the Baron wow that is good
dodge
-
Too kind Dodge! :D
Rob - I spotted the fleck of static grass clinging to the sword handle >:( but can't spot the chip?
-
I think it's just the lighting playing with my eyes! :)
-
Too kind Dodge! :D
Rob - I spotted the fleck of static grass clinging to the sword handle >:( but can't spot the chip?
He's been moonlighting as a lawnmower? :D Terror of the Lichemaster coming up too? Nice stuff as usual there.
-
Possibly - I've been and bought another rules set called Havoc from VoodooInk - lovely little book!
Hope to have a battle report soon - the Baron will be preying upon a band of Norse raiders returning home with their booty - right past where he is busy raising his undead army!
He's been moonlighting as a lawnmower?
lol
No he just flirted briefly with vegetarianism as the meat was a bit off!
-
So as promised earlier - the Baron's been busy...
Six more skeleton warriors (pictured here with the others I've already painted for those of you who can count!)for his band of lost souls salvaged from the depths of the box my skeleton army has been rattling round in for over a decade!
Quite quick pj's (all done in an afternoon) on these so apologies for crudeness and any mold lines I didn't spot in my haste!

Love those placcy skellies. Rust-tastic goodness. I'll have to paint up some Dwarven clerics ;D
-
Those look great. I like the rust effect a lot, especially on the shield of the skellie in the 3rd pic down. Very nice. If that's a quick paint job I'd love to see one you took your time on. :)

That's fightin' talk! >:( ;)
LuckyJoe - wish I had the time!
-
Ho, shit!
Them's some nice Boneys, Mr. Baron!
Still utterly in love with the bug-eyed skeleton at the beginning.
What model was he?
-
Nice swelling of the ranks, mate! They make a really nice horde!
-
Thanks again all!
Basiliscus - he's a Roy Eastland sculpt - believe he did a small number for Citadel? Funghy-Fipps seemed to be in the know judging by his kind response at the beginning of this thread!
-
Well its been quiet as the grave round my painting table for a few weeks now (busy time at work and a very relaxing week's holiday on a narrow boat on the canals of Warwickshire!) so I thought I'd get back into the swing of things with a mini I've been itching to paint for a while now.
The first of a bunch of chaotics who will be flocking probably quite slowly to the Baron's dread banner - Orc's Drift is still a priority and I've got a bit left to do with Golgfag's gang o_o .
Tremble and despair mortals in the presence of Koehler Richtus!
I had the idea that his life had been unnaturally extended by the fickle whims of the Chaos Gods - gave me a good excuse to have a go at verdigris on his armour and explains why it got a bit too green! ::)
I also wanted to go for the kind of skin effect you see on ice mummies - bodies that have been preserved for years and years in the ice. Wasn't quite brave enough to go as dark and patchy as the real frost-bitten thing but I think he looks suitably old and leathery!
Anyways here he is doing what he loves best - slaughtering some poor unfortunates - a small band of unlucky dwarf miners this time!
Any resemblances to a certain old GW scenario are purely coincidental... ;)
-
While I don't think it looks much like verdigris, his armour turned out really good and I'm happy to see the crusty old baron getting some additions to his forces.
-
Yeah I wasn't too cut up about it - maybe some lighter electric blue dabs here and there...
-
I think the ice mummy skin effect came out very well. One of the first things I thought seeing his face was Ice Man.
-
Cheers Joe - figured it might be a bit chilly up in those Northern Chaos Wastes!
-
I find rotting flesh to be a pretty good verdigris source. I never hear about it in verdigris tutorials, and I've never actually painted any verdigris myself, but whenever I use thin rotting flesh over a dark base coat, the first coating always reminds me of verdigris. Then again, when I think verdigris I think the really light, desaturated near-turquoise version. Others might go for the darkened copper style (which your armour reminds about a lot) with very few highlights.
-
He actually started out fairly bright like that - washed the armour with watered down white and then gave it a few washes of a jade green and electric blue wash. But I lost courage as, surprise, surprise - it looked very bright so he got a very watery few sepia washes as well as bronze shading and highlights and voila!
Maybe next time I'll go back to a dark base coat and then add the verdigris. ::)
-
Thatsant, I just read the first few posts in this thread.
Do you still need wheels for your skellie chariot?
I recently obtained a pair, but with no other bits from it.
Sterling work on all your mini's btw.
I'll have to paint a lot more to get near your level!
-
A new set of wheels would be amazing - I'll pm you!
Thanks for your kind words also! :D
-
I just saw this thread and I must say you're doing a very good job! I always love the way you paint up your old school models and these are no exception 8) I'm going to try and find your Orc's Drift topic now 8)
-
Cheers Pil - but I've got to say you're not helping me stop the boney ones tempt me too much away from the greenies! ;)
-
I just skimmed through your Orc's Drift topic looking at the pictures and reading one battle report, it sure is an impressive force and you are very productive! I love the shields on the orcs (wrong topic, but anyway). Of course seeing where you go with your undead will be equally inspiring (though the plastic skeletons are of course not as nice as all the old school metal models).
-
You're right although I do have a bit of a soft spot for the plastics - the ones I have are the survivors of the old skeleton army box set that must have been among some of the first minis I acquired!
Always got my eyes peeled for some nice metal ones though like Phreedh's excellent zombies... :D
-
so until then I'll have to content myself with these wights... (couldn't resist the urge after seeing Pil's superb undead army!)

http://teasgettingcold.blogspot.com/2010/11/itll-be-all-wight-on-night.html
-
I have some of those!! :o
Your choice of colours is nice - makes them look a bit like the LotR barrow-wights, and actually the understatement of colours make them much more eerie/scary than the traditional dark, rich colour schemes often seen. More 'corpse-shroud' like (if that makes sense).
I have to remind myself, than when dealing with the supernatural/horror stuff, as demonstrated here, less is often more. And I'm going to deal a lot with that, playing both Chaos in Carpathia, Fear and Faith, Strange Aeons, Dead Walk Again, AR:SE... (actually, I seem to have turned very much in the direction of horror-inspired adventure/skimish games during the last couple of years).
-
(http://i591.photobucket.com/albums/ss360/thantsants/Undead/PB110605.jpg)
Wight lifting? ;D
Nice to see them painted, never was keen on the models though.
-
Haha - very good! It is a strange weapon and pose I must admit!
As for the minis - I do like the chap with the chains and the winged helmet guy but I have a hankering for the marauder wights... :D
-
Oh wow, are those whites ever gorgeous! :o
Love the coloration, really brings out the life (death?) of the figures!
-
Wight lifting? ;D
Nice to see them painted, never was keen on the models though.
oh dear... lol
-
Wight lifting? ;D
You been at the 'träsprit' again, eh... (or whatever you call it 'round there...) ;)
