The Natal Mounted Police and Mounted Carbineers, are they close enough in uniforms that they could be used in one cavalry unit?

Without checking, the cap badges will be different along with some other minor details but they should be pretty close. As to 'can you use them in the same unit', yes you can, irregular cavalry was often amalgamated into a single unit.

the spikes are easily cut off, only difference would be the cuffs and helmet badge, and on a certain level the "attila" style jacket with braids.

I had the same idea but they are so many by now that I can split them into 2 units
