Title: Your favorite mythos deity
Post by: gloriousbattle on 07 June 2010, 02:07:43 AM
Doncha just wanna cuddle all those cute little tentacled, soul-destroying horrors, and give them big huggy-wuggies?  Sure.  We all do!  But which one is your fav?

For me: Yig, Father of Serpents.  I like the fact that he is one of the lesser gods, living in a cave somewhere rather than hanging out at the center of the universe or in some other dimension.  Horror has to be kinda imminent for me, or it becomes too remote to be really terrifying.

Also, snakes are just plain scary; and the idea of running into a bunch of cobras, rattlers, whatever, gives me the creeps.  Now, make 'em forty feet long and give 'em magic powers... :o

Shoggoths.  Make thier own appendages, some what technological savy, ooze through smallish openings, grow what ever appendage they need, what ever sensory organs they need, their mission is unknowable, motivations unponderable, they appear to feel nothing as they ooze over you, throttle you, rip you appart, amoral sort of. Emits errie noises, usually that you end up hearing just as it comes around a corner. Some what translucent lets you see into them... the things in them, oh, theres your advance scouting expert floating about..

Yep, likes them a lot  :o

And while not a diety they are my favorite in CoC

Having run CoC games for more years than I care to admit, there is no question.

Nyarlathotep is just so USEFUL and so BEYOND GOOD AND EVIL.

Got to second Nyarlathotep.  I really dig on the Egyptian theme, and he's one of the more interesting of the deities.  With his thousand forms he can pop up just about anywhere.  I loved how he was the focus for both the European Witch Cult and the Egyptian Cult.

Potentially Azathoth, I do hazard.

I love them all. <3

Well, except for Cynothoglys, Hziulquoigmnzhah, Ut'Ulls-Hr'Her.
Ridiculous and stupid, the three of them.
From their wiki description it sounds like the authors didn't even try to make cool monsters.  >:(

Agreed on old 'Hotep, but I have to say that Chaudra Faughn is a close second. He's theoretically vulnerable, responsible for many ancient mystery cults, insidious, and... well, once again, totally bizarre. He's essentially Ganesh on a bad day.

WOW, when you said Cthulhu tattoo on your arm, I pictures a small squid face on your bicep....THAT IS AMAZING.  A serious piece of work.  Very impressive.  Definitely want to see the finished product.

thanks mate :D
on July it will just get some sharpness and come colors (tattoo was too "fresh" to add colors when I was at the parlor last time) but after that... well... I'd really like drawing to grow: low arm, chest and back in the final ;D

That's a wonderful piece of tattoo art!

For me, my fave is Nyarly... with Yog Sothoth as a close second, but Chauga Faugn's pretty cool...

Say, anyone got any suggestions for a Nodens fig?  Best I could come up with was a Poseidon in a shell chariot, but right now I'm using an old Dragontooth thunder god.

It has to be the big guy himself!

All the others are pale(pasty/writhing/bubbling/oozing/crawling) pretenders to the throne! lol

If I had to choose a deity it would be Cthulhu or Dagon.

But of course my favorite chumps are the deep ones. Nothing better like an old good deep one.

Deity: Hastur. I just love the King in Yellow and the madness inducing stories it brings. Terrific stuff for roleplaying.

Creature: Elder Things or Yithians. They are so utterly alien they fit the mythos so well. It is so cool to see different pieces of art of these creatures. Most differ a lot from each other. It shows how alien the descriptions are.

My favorite deity is Nyarlathotep, but a close second is Shub-Niggurath.

A cool but uncommon one.  I like the King in Yellow.

Same here the King in Yellow
great poem

Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink beneath the lake,
    The shadows lengthen  In Carcosa.

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
But stranger still is Lost Carcosa.

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
Must die unheard in  Dim Carcosa.

    Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in Lost Carcosa.

Got to sy Nodens because he might not kill you.

Other than that Cthulhu used to play up front for my Sensible Soccer team, and I have to say having a big guy up front helped to win!

Hmmm I think any coc diety that when the chips are in and the party is outside the temple/cavern/location are heard to say:

"After you Mr Swenson"
"No no, after you Dr Armeston"
"Really its not bother, after you"
and on....

I have always had a lot of love for the Mi-Go, although they are a creature & not a Deity. They have odd motives, talk in a creepy sing-song hum, plus I love the moment when you realize that Akeley was an alien with his face and hands sitting in a chair......SPOOKY!!!!!

Agreed
Plus they've got the brain cases! And when you blast them with a shotgun they explode and you get to draw an item card!

The rath of this deity seems to be spreading further south and knocking on the doors of Gloucestershire as I write ....  :o

Yog-Sothoth! I love that old cosmic-bubblebath of doom :D Azathoth comes in a close second.

Favourite race is the Flying Polyps,  floating asymmetrical militant things = awesome.

Favorite deity is probably Azothoth, just because his/its description makes me quasi-suspect it's really the ET version of an anthropomorphized natural force or principle rather than a literal entity.

Most useful is Nyarly, 'cause he's a bit of a swiss army knife, what with his unlimited forms, inscrutable ways, and position as sort of the Apollo of the mythos pantheon. That same flexibility actually makes him boring to me though: his lack of definable anything makes him shallow as a character, and too transparently just a universal plot device. A diobolus ex machina, if you will.

Favorite critter is the Mi-Go. Whisperer in Darkness is probably my favorite Lovecraft story, because I love how despite everything you pretty much end up know nothing for certain at the end: anything or everything the protagonist has seen and heard could've been a lie. The mythos stuff written by later authors, especially the games fluff, tends to assume it's almost all true, but in the story any combination of lies and truth is equally possible, up to and including the possibility that the whole thing is a hoax and the Mi-Go don't exist at all.  o_o

That would seem to make them just as much a Swiss Army Plot Device as Nyarlathotep, but it doesn't: the Mi-Go have got hints of definable form and personality for the imagination to latch onto and run away with. Personally, I like to picture them as affable tricksters (or rather they're not, but that's how they come off to humans because of psychological differences), but anyone elses interpretation is just as "true".

I also like the Polyps for similar reasons: the only things we "know" about them are based on Yithian propaganda, and that doesn't 100% add up with what the protagonist sees/experiences in the latter part of the story. But on the other tentacle, The Yithians seemed to have a somewhat laissez-faire attitude about sharing info, so it may not have been in character for them to lie as such...
