Just seen this on TTG and thought it might interest those of you into Aliens games.

LOL, i just came over here to post that.
That's pretty dang cool, even though it's just paper....

Same here Supervike,
I already liked the UD-12 and with this added, both are going straight to the top 3 of my To Do list. Just a little re-scaling to 1/72 and i'm set.
The best part about papermodels is that you can actually afford as many as you want...
-
Liking that alot, with my experience in building cardstock stuff, I think I'm going to have a go at this.

I didn't see the exact dimensions of the cargo area of the dropship.
Think the APC will fit in as cargo? If so, that would be the coolest thing since peanut butter met jelly.

If your talking about the dropship made by the same cardstock guys then definately/obviously! :)
-
The fact that you can even choose the nose art on the dropship is pretty cool.
-
Thats a really nice APC model. The Dropship is nice too but looks more like a Firefly class ship than an Aliens dropship to me (although I would be quite happy to use either of those models in Aliens games, Im just saying).
I have yet to find a financially viable way to print cardstock models in my area. What do you guys do and roughly how much does it cost you?
By the time that the PDF, card and printouts have been paid for costs usually equals roughly the price of a similar non-card model in my experience. I suppose if multiple models are required then thats ok, but if not I will usually go for a more durable non-card model.
So, what do you guys reckon that a finished card APC will cost you in total (excluding the value of your time spent assembling etc)?

There is nothing obvious about it....

I don't disagree much on this. I'd much rather have a nice solid real model, that I can paint and 'feel'.
However, if the purporse of the cardstock plays a more terrain role, rather than an actual gameable item, I think cardstock makes sense.
I've bought a 100 pack of cardstock for roughly six dollars. Already have a color printer, and granted this sort of thing will suck up the (EXPENSIVE) color ink, I figure printing out 20 or so pages isn't going to use it all up.
So, I don't know...including the price of the download? Maybe $25-30 dollars total, allowing me to print several. Well worth it to me.
Time is a factor. This models are very time consuming, and can be a smidge frustrating (at least for straight edge impaired folks like me) but at the very worse, I just have to print out new ones.
I've cutout my previous cardstock stuff while overlapping watching a movie, or some sort of TV show. It was downtime anyhow, so I don't feel i lost much.
As for the dropship. There really isn't much of an option out there that isn't prohibitively expensive.
I still prefer the look and feel of real model scenics, but for things like roads, buildings, APCS, etc. I'm starting to think Cardstock is the way to go. Especially with the increasing options becoming available.
-
I print paper models myself, too. I really like the ability to print and build the number of models you like (of course, the average cost goes down with each aditional print, too, as the coast of the pdf is distributed evenly) - and to be able to replace a broken model within a couple of hours....
Like the dropship. And the APC. May consider the first for Star Mogul, the latter for the more advanced Steel Town dwellers for Nuclear Renaissance (my own take on the background).

I was a card stock skeptic, but have found the SF stuff to be a really good match. Here are some card stock models I have done this spring: http://www.flickr.com/photos/9975128@N05/sets/72157623906912558/

@ Jimmy: I like the corridors you've done. I might be convinced on those. But I'm still a skeptic. I fumble up paper models somethin' fierce. And, I just prefer the substance of real models for my vehicles. Also I play games with my kids a lot and my 3 boys would have these things crushed/burned/digested in no time.

The Worldworks models are really good - I use their Streets of Mayhem and some of their Urban Mayhem stuff for Near Future/Zombie games.
I am a bit in two minds about paper models and kids... on one hand, paper models can be easily crumbled, torn apart, destroyed by grease or liquids... on the other, they can be much more cheaply and easily replaced than an expensive piece of resin broken into smal bits by being dropped on the floor, or a heavy lump of metal having details hammered flat in the same process (not to mention the non-existing paintjob).
I LIKE resin/plastic/metal models better than paper - but, again, I can't afford having everything I want in expensive models, and many paper models DO look good - especially modern/sci-fi stuff.
But every man his cake. If you can settle for a few solid models, buying a little at a time (or your job allows you to buy whatever you fancy), by all means, do so (and remember to make pics for us to drewl over ;) ).
I'm just happy that I can get some models/buildings/roads for gaming that I would otherwise be hard pressed to be able to pay for :)
-
Argonor: I rarely buy expensive resin etc. So I compromise between the paper models and the uber-expensive. See this thread as an example:

Yeah, well - lots of toys can be pressed into service for gaming... I just bought a die-cast 1/43 red hummer that I actually think is a bit too small for 28 mm.... You cannot really trust those scales :?
My biggest problem concerning toys is, we only have a very small toy stor near us (and even that is 7 clicks away).
EDIT: Hmmm... now that I have seen the hummer next to some 'proper' 28 mm figs (not plastic orks) it actually seems quite beefy lol
-
I prefer the resin stuff too, but at least for 25mm / 28mm the choices are limited. So I end up mixing and matching resin, models, toys, kitbashes, and paper.

Now that's a paper kit worth purchasing if for nothing more than to up-scale/enlarge to 1/35 or 1/48 !
-
It's already god's own scale so why bother? :D

Actually planing a playhouse-playfort build for my nephews this summer, could quite easily see a kid-sized APC defending their backyard from bugs and other non-terrestrial pests !

If you actually pull that one through, PLEASE post pictures. The most we had was a sandbox (although that one was great fun).

Scale up the plans and you're away! Great idea, definately one to do for my little marines!

I have the M722 built and ht eDropship waiting on my hard drive. They're a bit overscale for my 25mm Denizen Mid-Tech's but not so big as to look wrong. The benefits of cost and portability outweigh any difficult build.

So upload your pics to photbucket or similar get the URL/address of the file (direct address).
Cut, paste the address into your post and hit the Insert Image Button or put (http://at the beginning of the address (before the Http) and) at the end after the file extension.
simples!

I've been thinking recently about using card model templates to make models out of sheet styrene instead of paper. B&W laser printer and photocopier toner can be heat transferred with a clothes iron, so I was thinking it would be easy to just print out cheap B&W pages on plain paper, transfer to styrene, then cut an assemble from there.
You'd have to leave out the tabs, depending on how thick your styrene was, and some models would have to be printed out flipped/mirrored, since the transfer process would flip them (I don't know how to do that with a PDF). Also vehicles with wheels would need extra work to eliminate the polygonal wheel look. The benefit though would be that you would have a much more durable model, which could also be fully detailed in 3D by cutting and layering the printed-on surface details separately, as well as whatever aftermarket/bits box details you wanted to add later.
More work than a straight paper model, but it the end product would be a full & proper plastic model, and for more or less the same cost as cardstock, depending on where you buy you styrene.

Hello, fist post an' all, came out of of lurkingmanship just to say....

Yes, he has some great designs for vehicles and buildings. I like how he gives loads of options with the colour schemes. I have a load of his stuff that I just need to find the time to build ::)
