Does anyone know of a good painting guide to how to pant the illusion of the characteristic ridges of a babmoo lance on a smooth shaft (brass rod)?
-
Keep 'em greenish. I haven't got any examples to hand but if you paint the whole thing a nice darkish olive/mint/green and then where you want the joins to be paint a very light narrow band leaving a small dark band. Inbetween the light bands paint a normal bamboo colour (depends on what species and how old, google for images) and blend it to the light.
It's worked for me and hopefully in the next day or so I'll get some photos for you :)

Thanks, jb, but I am looking for more of a government issue colour scheme. They seem to have been stained brown.

Didn't know that, are we talking turn of the century cavalry (or a bit earlier)?

wouldn't it be easier to make the knots with thin stripes of tape than painting them?

Turn of the century and later. According to a post on a Great War site they bamboo was not uncommon among British lancers, probably because it is cheaper and just as strong as ash.

They still use it for scaffolding :)

So British Lancers are in the construction business now? ;)

We've only had the new rule five minutes and the first one to break it is a moderator! lol I thought we were supposed to set an example. And putting No Crosspost in the title doesn't stop it being one.
Naughty Hammers!
Personally I've got a big bag of Foundry bamboo lances I got ages ago. I'm happy with 'em. Judging by previous discussions those kind of spears get a real bad press here, and are always dismissed as "too knobbly" but I don't know why. They seem to be held up to an exacting standard of realism that we don't seem to expect from anything else, and I'm mystified by it.
Yes, my army of cartoon-proportioned soldiers with their over-sized weapons and pantomime horses will be totally ruined if the bamboo spears aren't perfect miniature scale models.
They look fine to me. But that's just me. :)

Not at all. Can't help it, I am afraid. I am excepted for all kinds of rules just because I am such a interesting and loveable person. :)
Anyhoo, I find, looking at period lances they are much smother than expected so the rational behind not purchasing Foundry loose pewter at premium prices is that the alternative (painting brass rod) is both more realistic and cheaper. *snaps finger*

Lets see if it works this time Poly :D

Well you fucked that up, didn't you? :)
The LAF forum software doesn't like it if you use any tags or Youtube embedding code for some reason. If you do you get... well, that mess in the post above. For Youtube vids you only have to post the address of the page, and LAF converts it into an embedded video automatically.

An embedded video
Now that is not strictly on-topic, is it? ;) Unless you count the fact that I am more than a bit bamboozled after watching it.

No other fucker around here will stay on topic any more, so I don't see why I should have to. ;)
I question the wisdom of letting two six-year-olds run their own farm. I mean, they think their moo-cow is a "he" for a start. On the other hand, their animal training abilities are nothing short of prodigious, so good luck to them.
