Title: GenCon 2007 Terrain Preparation
Post by: Operator5 on 30 June 2007, 04:13:16 AM
I am just starting my preparation for GenCon and I'm going to track the progress of my showcase board on the Rattrap Image Gallery. I'm spending a bit more on this piece than I would normally since this will be my convention showboard.

I want it to look good, but not so intimidating that people are scared to try miniatures games. I'm using a lot of O scale train accessories to get the look I want as well as not having to try and scratchbuild everything.

You can follow the work here:

Looks liek its going to be a great board, lots of extra detail always makes such a difference . Looking forward to seeing the work as it develops.

I have always had a liking for dockside games. There's always something suspicious going on somewhere along the docks  at night :)

Looking forward to see this. Looks like a perfect mate for my steamer project. :-)

Say, Operator, you look like a man who knows his way arround the  O scale building manufacturers. Ever come across a brick factory or warehouse?

Here is a link to the one I'm using. You'll be able to see it come together, how it works for miniatures AND a neat little speed painting technique I've learned that will have it painted and looking like real brick in no time.  8)

A superb pice of work, really looking forward to seeing it progress. I haven't seen the Ameri Towne buildings before (thanks for the link). They look excellent, how do they work with 28mm figures?

Ask and ye shall receive.

I just happened to start work on one of the walls last night (and I'll be showing my technique for getting the wall done to the level shown with it only taking about 15-20 minutes). So, I took a test photo of it this morning. I've added some of my newly arrived Artizan Sky Pirates (painted by ollberger) to show scale.

You will see that the scale is a little bit big for 28s, but with a game in progress, I don't think anyone would notice (except the front doors that I removed and am replacing. They looked big).

There go the good intentions   First class paint job on the building. I think the scale looks fine, buildings should be big.

Doesn't it depend on the purpose of the doors - factory doors might be big for cargo loading etc.

Are the buildings really 1/4 inch thick ?

I think the cargo doors are fine. The front  door that I cut out to replace, had the model barely comeing up to the doorknob.

And the walls are between 1/8" and 1/4" thick.

So if we're allowed to cuss in our own language, yeah: "satan i helvete". There is simply no O scale to be found here in SWeden either.

I have a bunch of those Ameritowne buildings, so I am eagerly awaiting hearing about your painting technique for them.  Looks great!

Of course, I didn't notice the thing with the front doors of the warehouse being big, so mine is already assembled.  Ah well...

Looking good, the brickwork is great.  :)

Looking forward to hearing the secret of the bricks.

Okay, I've put up my tutorial on the brickwork. The piece you see me working on took about 20-25 minutes to complete and is roughly 18" long by 8" high.

You'lll notice that at no time do I apply paint or primer to the piece. That's how easy this is.

Start with Step 0 and go through step 6.

Okay I gave in to temptation and bought the Ameri Towne Burke Building from Model Valley Trains. Fantastic service, less than a week to deliver to the UK.

The building is superb and I think the door  scale looks fine with the larger 28mm figures. I will definitely be ordering some more.
