So I had a heap of scrap foam-core left over from other projects and the wife came home with some pretty sturdy promotional boards that were just crying out to be used for something. That coupled with my recent trial of the game Infinity (Great game by the way) started those creative juices flowing.
Now if anyone has ever played Infinity you will know that the more terrain you have the better. Now when we play we like to use laser pointers for are line of sight. Makes it so much more fun being able to trace a line of sight from one table edge to the other at a figure that the opponent thought was hidden.
I also wanted to do a set of terrain for a War of the Worlds game using GASLIGHT (28mm tripods to come at a later date) and which without stretching the imagination too far could also be used for Secrets of the Third Reich (Alternative WW2)
So over the last couple of evenings I have been quickly bashing this together.

So there is a fair way to go before its finished. At the moment its 6'x 4' but I have enough bits to extend it to 8.5' x 4' eventually. With all the boards modular I can make it different shapes (so long and thin, short and square etc but figure with the buildings the size they are you don't want too wide a table or it will make it difficult to reach the middle of the board.
I will be adding rubble and general rubbish to the boards, broken street lights and the like. So I guess i will have many a night cutting out 6mm x 3mm bricks to litter the place.
just thought I would post it here for your amusement, comments and critiques.

Wow! :P
-
You have too much space >:D
-
Impressive...
-
That looks like it will make for some great games in multiple genres. Great work so far.
-
Very nice. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

I was pretty damn shocked when the photo finally loaded :o :o I want to see this board in action.

Great project!

Awesome. You don't mess around when it's time to build. I'm usually happy churning out one building at a time. :o
-
Amazing! That took a couple of nights? WOW :)

A wonderful use of scraps. And of course it gets better because even the scraps of the scraps can be used as rubble. I make it a point now to do building projects in 25mm first, then 15mm with the remnants. Its amazing what you can do with all those bits.
I love the laser pointer LOS idea. Wonderful for FIBUA. I might steal one from the cats! I once saw a bocage game where the players used 'upside down' periscopes to get a tank commander's eye view of the scenery. The figures could only shoot at what THEY could see. Kinda frustrating when you knew there was a Panzer Division behind the next hedge but the figure couldn't see them!
-
A quick update with the start of some rubble added to one section. The rubble goes some way towards blocking off LOS. I added paint to the glue so I could see which bits I had coated. Once dry I quickly under-coated it black and gave it a very quick dry-brush before I add another layer. I will start adding other bits of debris at the next stage too.

You the man!
Nice work!
How mant Exacto blades do you go through? I go through a TON :(
Like one blade for every one or two buildings.
-
That's what I like to see, plenty of rubble! I hate seeing 40k type boards with huge great building corners everywhere and no sense of where the building was. Having said that, is the rubble level enough to balance figures on without them falling off easily?
-
Wow! That is super impressive! It will take a while to paint all the buildings/ruins I guess..
-
wow just wow -not only using up "scraps" but generic enough for many peroids/genres -what you figure on using for the tripods? I like the look of the ones Eureka are to put out.
-
:o wow (again) nice work, wish I had that much space. :)
Look forward to seeing this finished.

A neat trick, if you are using metalic bases, throw a magnet bit in the rubble every inch or so (not two, too close together). Just get a thick fridge magnet, hit it with a hamer or break off a chunk with pliers, and it looks like a brick that's been smashed.
No more figures falling on the rubble.

Now thats a good idea

As always Hutch the stuff looks amazing can't wait to see more of it :D

WoW! i'm really waiting to see it finished! :)

Wow! very nice, it's always great to see a table full of buildings. Bring on Lebenon!
-
So a quick update.
Rubble applied (second layer on a different set of buildings.) I didn't bother with adding paint to the glue this time around though. The flat piece on top is one of the upper floors that slides in to the building on the right.

Boards 2 and three with rubble added

Cant wait till all the rubble is done, but it takes a while to dry as the air is a little damp.

Very nice. I never knew rubble could look so good. :)

cool!
what did you use for the rubble this time? cork?
-
Wow excellent job I'm looking forward to more progress reports.

Yeah looks like cut up bits of cork tiles.

Very impressive! Can't wait to see it finished.

Really good stuff..you see so many ruins where people just don't appreciate just how much mess and rubble buildings make when they collapse..and not just rubble but bits of glass (acetate sheet), wooden planking from balsa or lolly sticks, roof tiles (I know how much you like cutting individual ones). Like to see how you intend to finish the walls..that will really give them more of a date. I reckon some use of brick sheets bonded with pva then plastered around would give the desired effect. And maybe sprinkling some of your rubble mix atop the walls prior to the final plaster coat would make them look really ruined. Also like the idea of sections of buildings which have been re-inhabited and have been patched up with tarps/ packing crates and bits of pig iron.
Can't wait to see how these turn out.

That's my guess. I think I'll be stockpiling up on cork tiles. I found a craft store that is selling them for 50 cents each. She gets all sorts of weird stuff in then just prices it and sells it. Weird little business but it's been around for a while...
