Title: Sci-fi urban terrain
Post by: dijit on June 19, 2010, 02:23:58 PM
Well after almost half a years thought and planning, I've started making my sci-fi urban terrain. I've got the boards done, they're now waiting paint:

The buildings are going to be very modern (regular shapes, large windows) inspired by some of the buildings around my local park here in Vejle:

So next step, is covering the boards with paint, then I can start on the buildings.

Looks like you're off to a good start. Those are cool inspirational buildings. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I always like to see sci-fi urban boards, so I'm joining the ranks of eager spectators.  :)

That looks like a promising start!
Nice sources of inspiration too.

Thanks, well to Denmark's unconvincing win against Cameroon yesterday I managed to get the base layer on the boards and have started work on the first building. When there's something worth showing again I'll take piccies and sow it.

Well i've been a bit slow in getting wnything done, but I've now put a couple of layers of paint on the boards and half completed the first building. It just needs painting then windows and finishing touches to be added.

Very nice.  So I take it you can remove each layer and place minis inside.

Yeah each level is built so you can lift it off to get minis inside. It'd be much easier to build them without that feature, but I think it makes for a more interesting board. Jens (Zarfarelli) has built a beautiful board with modelled interiors and although his boards would be great without them, they just add that little extra that makes it a joy to play on. So in a effort to try to do the best possible I've decided to do the same.

Looking good!

Will the side wings have full glass fronts, or will they be open, like balconies? And will I be able to go on a rampage inside at Horisont?

Hi, the sides will be open balconies with glass fencing. And yes i hope to give you a little competition for a good sci-fi table at horizont! :p Not that I think I can compet quite to the level of the board you presented at GLAM.

Well my son hasn't been sleeping too well over the last month, so work on the board has slowed to a snails pace (sleep suddenly came much higher on my list of priorities than modelling). But I've managed to paint and colour the boards using artists acrylics with pastels to add tones and then a tipex mouse to mark the centre lines of the roads.

Whilst the building has been painted and I've started to add glazing made out of acetate (this is rather awkward to do and resulted in the only time I've ever stuck my fingers together after 19 years of regularly using superglue!), but the effect I think will be worth it.

Thanks,

Wow... thanks for sharing... awesome looking stuff... anyway you can share some techniques on the streets and sidewalks?
The pavements are made from thick cardboard ((2mm thick), which I then scored with a knife along the paving slab edges, then taking a scuplting tool (an old ball point ought to be ok too, I used the flat edge of a craft knife at first, but that didn't seem to work too well) I ran it along to lines widening them and creating a recess. First I painted to whole board a dark grey using a small and cheap roller, then lighten the roads a little. Whilst the pavements got progressively lighter greys (always with a little brown added, I read somewhere it makes the paint look more natural, and it seems to work). Once it was all dry I marked the lines again with a 0.1 drawing pen. Then I took some soft pastels I had a few odd slabs were dusted to add different shades and the whole thing sealed with hairspray (which makes it look dark at first then clears leaving the pastels 'set' in place). I hope that helps explain it, it's pretty simple really, it just takes time.

No reason not to be satisfied with the stairs, to me they look just fine  :)

Thanks Jonas!
Yesterday I managed to get a the final touches to the next building done whilst watching Ghost in the Shell. It's a fairly simple box, so was pretty quick to build. The front will be 'glassed' with acetate once it has been painted. This led to some construction issues as the 'glass' couldn't be broken half over, so the front and sides are one piece whilst the back slides out with the first floor and the third floor is free standing - if that makes any sense at all? (hopefully the pictures will help explain it)

It just needs painting now. I've also finishing the first buildings glazing, it just needs texturing internally and then it's done.

Thanks. I put the first layer of paint on it, and found out that foamboard does indeed warp (well this is my first time using foamboard so now I know!). So it's now sandwiched under an old very heavy laptop (it'd break your thighs if you sat with it on your lap) with a new brace trying to pull the sidewalls in again - lets hope it works!

Foamcore is pretty good building material.  I use it quite a bit but it does have some properties that take some getting use to.  I like the way your buildings are progressing.  How decorated will the interiors be?
Title: Re: Sci-fi urban terrain
Post by: dijit on August 14, 2010, 07:34:31 AM
Yeah it's my first build with foamcore, so I'm getting used to it. I'm hoping for reasonably decorated interiors, but I'll be going back and doing them once I've a few more buildings done and can do them together. I'm looking for wallpaper and floor texturesat the moment, found a few good wooden floor textures, but wall paper seems hard to come by.

Those buildings are looking great - perfect gaming buildings! Nice shape, well made, lots of nooks and crannies and different levels to make the playing area interesting. Spot on.
If you're thinking of wallpapers for the interiors at some point, you should definitely think about the patterned paper that scrap-bookers use. Lots of them look like contemporary wallpapers, and they're not that expensive at all - anything from 50 cents to two dollars a sheet. I have a feeling, though, that scrap-booking is much more popular here in the US than it is in Europe. I hope I'm wrong, though, as finished interiors would really make these buildings shine!

Thanks for the hint, i was only bemoaning my wife the other day that the only hobby shop here in Vejle  has turned all 'girly' and seems to have nothing but pearls and scrap booking! So maybe there is something useful there after all, I'll have to go have a look on monday - thanks for the hint again!.

Scrap-booking may be the answer, then. I've used various scrap-booking papers as wallpaper for my western buildings, and I had always thought that when it comes to doing some contemporary buildings, that there would be much more choice, so I think you'll find something interesting.

As I told you an architect or building designer has been lost in you.  lol

Marvellous constructions. Although this last building is somewhat looking like it's awaiting Ikea drawers to be put in.  ;)

Now that I've bought the last 6 star trek films I shan't get anything done at all. But I'll swing by here to watch your progress.

lol as said it is rather basic in construction, though there might be something scandinavian in it's design - have I really lived here too long not to notice anymore?  o_o

Well I've sort of finished the second building now, it just needs a little touching up where black paint has got on to the white. Plus whilst painting it I've learnt a few things: yes foamboard warps (as mentioned earlier); it's a good idea to paint the insides of buildings with stairs and internal supports before putting them together otherwise you end up with the afore mentioned black paint on your nice white walls as you hand is doing contortionist impressions!
But without further ado the next building:
(sorry for the bad photos btw)
