Not quite, especially if they are wearing tin hats. You'll find a good article on Japanese uniforms here.

The Black Army figures might form the basis for conversions.

'Pulp Figures' and 'Copplestone Castings' are probably your best bet, although the Copplestone are of Chinese so some weapon swaps and tinkering would be needed.
'Redoubt' and 'Old Glory' do Boxer Rebellion Japanese but I don't know what your time frame is.

Neither of which are suitable and/or would require conversion.

Our Black Army figures are in m1930 uniforms, with the appropriate web gear, weapons, and helmets. For earlier Japanese, you can probably get away with our figures, as the cut of the uniform was very similar. Probably a small matter of conversion for the major details.

I think, optimum to make conversion of figures ' Copplestone Castings'. Compare.

I wish Copplestone would simply make a Japanese range for BoB.
While I am at it I also wish for a sky blue Volvo P1800 to appear for me in my parking lot.

Seems like we have at least two heart felt wishes in common. Lovely looking car the P1800, unless of course you count the estate version. I know Swedes have a reputation for being profoundly practical folk but who thought a station wagon version of a classic sports car was a good idea?

BTW is that the the colour you were after?

Well, you know, always good to have a little extra room when you need to pick horse manure for the beet fields at the neighbouring farm.

Something like it. There was a piccy of a faultless example in the paper this morning. I am pining...

Anyway, back to those Japanese. I wonder what it takes to wake Mark Copplestone out of his stupor.

The soft rustle of bank notes? ;)

I heard somewhere that he had dismissed the idea and suggested folk use his exisiting Chinese.

Yet he happily released Czechs although White Russians would have worked quite well.
-
Be nice if he released anything for BoB let alone Japanese.

Actually the Bolsheviks are an even better match, no need to shave off shoulder boards. I use them as Czechs. 'Twas a strange choice.
I just wish he would do anything, particularly Glory of the Sun King.

This *is* me being nice. >:D

:D In Germany we call it 'Schneewittchensarg' (Snowwhite Coffin)

I have corrected your statement ;)

Does anyone know if the Black Army Japanese are a good match with Copplestone? I'd prefer to pit them against my (very) few Chinese warlord figures (18 figures!! Woohoo! This economy sux!!) if they match. Also, any on-line painting guides for the Japanese at this time?
Thanks for your reply!

Hmmm. They are a good match for pulp figures. I haven't compared them to Copplestone, but the copplestone chinese I had, seemed rather big minis compared to most ranges.
-
Would love to see more BOB releases from Copplestone - mounted White officers would be nice.
-
I'm with you on that! Anything BoB for me, Copplestone does an amazing job!
-
Wouldn't they look like 55 Days in Peking Boxer Rebellion?
-
Umm, I don't think so, but I could be wrong. :?

I'm talking about the Japanese embassy security guards defending the embassy not the rebels. No?

Oh you mean the buildings. Maybe...Someone with more knowledge may come along and enlighten us!
-
I dunno...I would think the uniforms would be different in the '20's than those during the Boxer Rebellion. I really don't know?!?
-
Different uniforms by the RCW period. take a look at the Lanships website, it has a reprint of an article on the Japanese army in the Great War which has a number of useful b&w uniform plates.

The Japanese changed from the typical blue/white to kharki in about 1905. When I've got more time I'll put a bit more info here.

It's just that the Old Swede has taste and continental moderation. ;) lol

Yes despite his age he appears to remained continent(al)

Looking at photos of the siege of Tsingtao in 1914, you see artillery men wearing dark (presumably blue) uniforms, and quite a few officers, too. No rank and file infantrymen, though. Many illustrations of the time depict Japanese troops in dark blue, but the photographic record doesn't bear this out.
-
I believe it was mainly infantry and cavalry (officeres and rank and file) that changed to kharki but it wasn't a complete change over as some units kept the blue.
I'll have a proper look in the book when I get home.

Also, the Saint (Roger Moore version) drove a Volvo P1800, so Hammers is showing some obscure variety of good taste here.
-
Thanks to you both! James, can't wait!

The book I'm referencing from is called 'Japanese Military Uniforms 1841 - 1929' but it more of a picture reference book rather than wordy one.
It is in Japanese with English subtitles (as much as you can get in a book and not a film :) )
The plate I took the info from has 32 infantry officers in different examples of officially approved uniforms ranging from 1900 to 1904 and there is a plate that mentions infantry dress changing to kharki in 1905 from the normal dark blue.

Always take the contemporary illustrations with a pinch of salt. The postcard types, whilst colourful in all senses of the term, tend to be more imaginative than accurate. There are some fabulously vivid Japanese illustrations, sort of early manga. In the same time frame I'v seen popular contemporary German illustrations of the crossing of the Yser canal where the British Army is depicted in red coats and bearskins. Plynkes is right, the photos don't bear out the use of other than khaki by japanese infantry in the Great War and post War period. No doubt earlier items were retained at the outset by reserve units, newly formed units or issued piecemeal to use up existing stocks but by the time of the RCW and beyond that seems most unlikely.
A dedicated range of Japanese for Tsingatao through to the invasion of China in the early thirties would appear to be a good project for one of the smaller companies perhaps? Scarab, Woodbine etc. It seems every BoBster has a 'Mad Baron' army so it seems there's a commercial prospect for someone wishing to act.

This is being thought about and planned at the moment. I can't say anymore until everything is a bit more concrete.

and it is a bugger to move! Plus it will collapse my terrain!
