Title: Better way to make and paint barbed wire?
Post by: Pentaro on 20 June 2010, 01:08:51 PM
I've painted some GW craters as shellholes and I've put some remains of barbed wire on them to add some detail, and also to see how it looks. It took me too much and it could look better:

-First I tied some Army Painter wire  to the poles.
-Then I tied some "knots" to the wire and cut them to make it look like the real thing.
-I painted the whole thing black, then I painted the wire in dark grey.
-After drybrushing the wire in reddish brown (is "reddish" a word?), I painted the poles trying not to stain the wire.

Is there a better way? How would you have done it? By the way, the Games Workshop craters are nice, but they're that, meteorite craters and not shellholes.

Thanks a lot, they only take a few minutes to wash with soap, detail and drybrush. The only thing that didn't work was the wire, I had seen this one (http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/284/convw.jpg) and I wanted to do give it a try :(

I made a pile of barbed wire for a WW1 project a couple years back. There's a little tutorial on my blog in two parts:

Don't know if that's quite what you're looking for but maybe it will be a spring board to new ideas...

That's a very good idea, Tim! I've also been told to staple the wire to a photo frame and paint it (brown base, steel drybrush, then a light silver drybrush) before glueing it to the poles.
