Here's a pic of a guy I've been working on for a VSF Mars project. I'm pretty happy with it, and I figure a good coat of paint should cover up any imperfections in the putty work.

The figure is a Black Tree Design British Infantryman, whose Martini-Henry has been used as the basis for the raygun. As might be noticeable to those familiar with the BTD figures, I've filed off the annoying ridges on his helmet.
He's not done yet though, as I want to add a power-pack connected to the raygun via some guitar string, so more pics as he progresses.

Very cool.
-
I like that!! :)
-
Me too. Awesome sculpting!
-
Lovely jubbly. The powerpack will finish it off nicely.
-
Will these act s Heavy Weapons attachments or will there whole units of these?
Gracias,
Glenn

Thanks all!
I was thinking that the raygunner would be attached as a specialist or whatever to a normal squad to provide them with extra fire-power, like a SAW gunner or something. Plus I don't want to deal with making a whole lot of these guys right now. Maybe a few more, but we'll see. I also have yet to decide on what rules I'm going to use so maybe that will affect it.
-
Nice conversion! :-* Yes, I can see the sense in using him as a SAW gunner for a bit of extra firepower when Jonny Martian comes calling.
-
That's real good.Well played.
-
Delightful piece of work. Very neat and period evocative. Love it (although I would have not used a BTD fig myself ;))
-
Yeah, BTD leaves something to be desired, so perhaps I'll go with Empress for the next figures I get.
-
Sounds like a great plan. Ten or (for some rules, 20,) would be a small cross to bear IMO.
Looking forward to see it painted.
Gracias,
Glenn

I did some more work on the ray-gunner today, adding a power cord and the basis of the power pack. Once it dries, I'll sculpt little fiddly-bits onto the backpack, but here he is now:

Great job! Have you thoughtabout casting up the gun or something like it? I'm sure I'm not the only guy feeling raygun-envy over this...
-
I would be more than willing to cast something up since it would be plenty useful for me to have as well as for anyone who wanted it, but the problem is that I have no idea how. Are you talking resin?
-
Wow! I'm convinced! This must be what British ray gunners looked like in the 19th century!
Nice job mate.
-
Super conversion!
Seems so easy... but not for folks like me! o_o
-
That is some very intricate and impressive green-stuff work. I fear for your sanity if you are going to do a unit of them :?
I'd agree with using Empress or maybe Perrys as a basis for future conversions. You might as well use the best possible basic figure, if only to act as greater incentive to produce the best you can.
Having stuggled in recent weeks to do a conversion of a top-hat wearing, Gibson SG plucking, machine pistol-toting SciFi outlaw, I can appreciate the amount of work, swearing and gulping whiskey that go into doing this sort of thing.
I'd love to try a similar VSF model for myself one day. Now, back to trying to get that black leather effect on the top-hat :D
-
Thanks alot Gluteus- I don't think I'll end up doing a unit of them. I don't think that the crown saw fit to send more than a couple to the area of Mars I'm concerned with. ;) And good luck with your own conversion- hopefully we'll see some pics soon.
So here is the final sculpting on the figure and although I need to add a hilt to his empty bayonet scabbard, tomorrow priming and painting should begin, so I'll post the finished product here eventually. I'm thinking about converting some type of loader/ammo carrier as well, so we'll see how that goes, but anyway, here is the finished power-pack.

Is that a Marconi-Henry rifle? :)
-
:o
Shabash huzoor!
Very nice indeed.
I agree that a whole unit would be over the top. This being experimental tech and all.
Should prove handy for taking down Russian flyers!

Love the figure. When I saw the pic where you added the stuff to his back, I immediatly thought 19th C Ghostbusters :) Please keep posting pics.

I like that Marconi-Henry rifle thing lol
I too thought of ghostbusters when I was making it. I've been a bit busy recently with holidays and the World Cup to watch, so he still awaits painting, but I'll get on it! Thanks for all the interest. :)

That's awesome, utterly awesome!
I want one!
You should read Edison's conquest of Mars, it has a very pulpy VSF feel and this is what I imagine the 'Disintegrator ray' to look like! :)
-
An inspired conversion. Well done.

Top hole! Well done, would love to see it painted and based (I'm sure you would too!)

Very Nice... although it begs for Tesla in the name somewhere.
I like the goggles... you've got to have goggles firing something that looks like that.
