Title: British Camel Corps
Post by: The Gray Ghost on 29 June 2010, 11:39:06 PM
I'm looking for some figures to make a British Camel Corp in WW I.
I know there wasn't one but here is what I'm after, 28mm both foot figures and camel mounted.
I'm thinking of Old Glory camels from their Sudan range or Perry Bros.
The only cavalry I can find is Brigade Games in Africa and the Middle East and I'm not sure how well they would fit on a camel.

I know there wasn't one...

Yes there was.

Okay, so it was mostly Aussies, but there were Brits and Kiwis in it too. It was a British camel corps in the sense of British Empire camel corps.

I think Dewbakuk has the best idea, unless by some miracle you can get a horseman to sit on a camel without looking daft. Time to get some Woodbine Designs Wolseley helmet head sets, some SMLEs (though where from I have no idea), some Perry Camel Jockeys and get the Green Stuff out.

For the dismounts you could just get Woodbine Designs British infantry and paint their trousers to look like riding breeches. Maybe give them Greenstuff bandoliers if you are feeling adventurous.

A reenactor picture to give you a slightly better close-up view:

Sinai, Palestine (and I have a feeling the Western Desert against the Senussi). 300 or so British Yeomanry from the Imperial Camel Corps also formed part of the British Military Mission to the Arabs, and took part in operations in the Arab Revolt.

The camels are also available without saddles etc. from eBob.

You may be right. The uniforms and equipment are correct, but the poses not. Not really sure which way would be more work. I'm not all that keen on the Brigade Games Wolseley helmets, though. They look a bit odd to me. Also you have to buy a bunch of horses you aren't going to use, so more expensive.

*Aherm* Excuse me, but Wolseley helmets are odd, period. :)

Also, it is always worth checking with Lon if he would consider selling the Yeomanry sans horses. He's one of these fellows who is always very accommodating.

Yes, through my own stupidity I somehow managed to lose all the knick-knacks that come with his Indian lancers and he sold me some more individually.

The Assault Group do seperate rifles, just make sure you get the mk3 not the mk4.

GWM's dismounted cavalry might work with a headswop as they already have the bandoliers. I don't know if the woodbine heads will work though, I think GWM might be noticably bigger.

Good call, I had forgotten about those.

This question has come up before. Personally I think they would look okay:

Lancashire Yeomanry (Queen's Own Two Headed), is that historically correct? Shouldn't they at least have the same headgear? ;)

It is not widely known, but Zaphod Beeblebrox formed the Betelgeuse Pals Battalion in 1915.

Yes, but I heard one head was promoted while the other was not and the whole unit disbanded during the fallout.  :D
