Title: Another Aliens/Space Hulk Project, looking for suitable Square Resin bases?
Post by: gunnermax2 on 10 July 2010, 01:34:16 AM
Anyone know where I can get some bases for my Aliens/Space Hulk Project. Basically what Im intending is using Copplestone/Em4 future wars troopers with Hasslefree rifles and using the Gripping Beast Helmets for conversion of the heads. I picked up the Gripping Beast guys and got one painted, (pic to follow) but altough they are the most authentic, they just dont feel quite right and some of the faces are quite elf like. Im planning on using the figs 3 fold, first just in SH, second in the Leading Edge game which Im busy making the reactor room etc using SH tiles, and thirdly I was thinking of getting the First Light PDF and creating my own Hadleys Hope (Operations etc) and using my own rules. Im slowly starting work on the figs and as I only plan 10 of them I really want to do a good job on them. Ill probably need some advice later on down the line with some finer details but my first query is if anyone knows where I can get some decent resin bases for them? As all the games are tile based I wanted squares just to assist in facing and turning really. Im sure if there are some out there someone on the forum will point me in the right direction. Dont think anyone has covered doing exactly the same thing on here but the there are loads of inspirational posts on here that make me determined to get this project sorted!
many thanks
Max

Why do they have to be resin bases?

Am I missing something?

Fenris games sells some great bases.

If you order direct at the moment (rather than using their e-bay store) there is a sale on.

Dragonforge are also very good.

Because with resin you get excellent scenic options.

Again second Fenris for some great aliens inspired bases:

The problem is, that the SH / Alien Planet / Tech resin bases I found, are all round. I've looked at MaxMini, Micro Art Studio, Black Cat Bases, Dark Art and Taban. Most Sci - Fi games (AFAIK) use round ones, so finding square scenic bases should be quite a task...
I'm afraid it's up to you to convert / build some

How much of a rush are you in?

Happy to add square versions of our Sulaco bases to the to-do list :)

Was going to say all you gotta do is ask Ian and he'll do his best to deliver.

Just about to paint up a selection of fenris bases now so once done I'll post em up.

UPDATE:

25 bases finished tonight :o, various sizes, will post up later today in my own new aliens thread so keep an eye out.

Fair enough.

I confess I have never been one for "busy" bases. If I was basing for Space Hulk textured plasticard on a normal base would seem appropriate: giving that look of grating below the feet without much by way of effort.

I would seem to be in the minority here though.

More effort to cut discs to size, glue on and sand/file to be honest. But each to his or her own. I don't like busy bases either,Fenris bases are detailed rather than busy. When I post up take a look.

Cheers

another recommendation for the Fenris "sulacco" bases - if Ian is prepared to make some square ones, i'd hold on for them - the round ones are very frothy!

The Fenris ones were the initial benchmark for what I wanted, I was just thinking 'if they were available in square'! More than happy to hold out for them Ian as its going to take me a while to put them together anyway. The choice of resin is that I feel if you are only doing a few 'elite' or special figs that modern future wars lends itself to so well, then its worth the effort to give them decent bases. That and the fact the Fenris ones are rather spiffing. Not sure what the term frothy means though?!

Okay, will bump them up the to-do list. Couple of major jobs to get out of the way this week, then it's onto new stuff duties: hopefully will have these ready within the next couple of weeks.

Well while you're waiting for the square ones, you can see the quality of the resins, lovely bases, great to paint, you won't be disappointed.

My original board for FASA game uses plastic window screening for the grating. Cutting squares for a gazzilion bases would be no problem.

Now, if you try to do the board the same way I did, another story entirely...

After gluing the proper sized piece of screen to a bit of plywood, I made a small 'tool' from a bit of sprue with a notch cut down the center, and put a bead of modeling putty in the groove and ran it down to make the edges of each floor plate. TOOK FOREVER.

@CV Damn, those ARE pretty...

I think Epicast did something similar, but I don't recall that quality. Course, maybe it's just your painting... ;->=
