Well then,
My love of aliens began with a second hand recount of Aliens from a friend of mine who was a few years older than me (I was 13! :o)) and able to see the film at the cinema on release. This unhealthy love of all things alien continued throughout my teens with door posters, dark horse comics and such like, embraced the predator on the way, (remember having a dodgy copy that I took to a french class at the end of term and convinced the teacher to let us watch it!) into my adult life.
Aliens can be seen as the grand daddy of modern day sci-fi, (we wouldn't have avatar without it) a serious influence on wargaming across the range, (Kryomek, Bug Hunter (Sniper!) and of course Space Hulk, would not have been created without that healthy nod to Jim Cameron.
There are a plethora of Aliens related projects currently and good to see them all take shape. This particular take on the genre has been in the 'planning stage' now for a good few years, but now is the time to pull all these loose threads together into something usable.
This will be a slow project, (fitted in between the joys of twin fatherhood, work and life), but I do intend to have a usable collection of miniatures at least sorted by the autumn.
Ok so were to start.... (I'll go through the miniatures list later but for now will concentrate on the bases).
Back to Bas(e)-ics:
I've had various Fenris Games alien inspired bases in my base filing cabinent for a while now, added to recently with the new smaller trooper sized bases. And there they sat, (occasionally pulled out to place a test alien on or to put a E4M sentry gun on), unpainted and neglected.
Until yesterday evening... Grabbed them all and cleaned up and primed around 25 various bases, started painting them last night, finished this afternoon:

Notes:
i) Went for a solid metal finish for the grating/floor panels:
mix of tin bitz(GW) drybrushed, with successively lighter coats of boltgun metal, chaimail, silver, washed with badab black and devlan mud.
ii) We all know about Tamyia Clear Red (TCR) for our zombie needs, well I found a TCG: Tamyia Clear Green at my local model shop.
Ideal for those areas on the bases suffering acid burns where one of ripley’s bad guys was bagged. ;)
ii) Tried to keep a uniform theme with industrial chevron markers and a consistent approach to piping and ductwork present on the bases, (Red and blue with directional arrows and other markings.
iii) Sections of wall or panels were painted in a mix of VJ colour us olive drab and basalt grey, keeping that utilitarian look.
Very pleased with the way they turned out, I've another twenty of the older medium sized bases to complete, will undercoat those tonight.
After that I just need a few more smaller bases for the rest of my colonial marines and I’m laughing.
More next time: figure lists.

I really like your bases. The painting is very subtle...not overpowering at all.
Very realistic.

Tidy job as usual Mark.

Interestingly, i think we are going to go in a very different direction with this one.... ;)

Up and down scalable Matt of course!
(Well in would be good to have some healthy debate on this... Ok Colonial Marines Technical Manuals at the ready!).
:D

i'm working on the followingforce ratio:
80 USCM : 8 Predators :320 Aliens
call it, an ambition.....
...and yes, that should be a full company of marines....

I worry about the state of your mind and more importantly your wallet! ;D
Watching both these threads now with great anticipation.

Right....
So then onto the figures:
Horrorclix Aliens vs Predator sets:
Horroclix aliens: My first choice for xenos, had these in the attic for a good few years, wish I'd bought more when the poundland shops were knocking em out for silly money :(
Aliens collector sets (3 and counting ;)).
Alien queen
Other aliens: Praetorian's, chest bursters, facehuggers & drones.
Praetorians:
Well, will either look to kyromek or GW nids for a suitable mini or two.
Chest bursters, Facehuggers & drones:
More to follow ;)
Horrorclix Predators:
I've copplestone hunters, dopperganger resin oop preds and the Heresy Hurn to play with but also a have the collector's and limited edition 2007 model to play with, these will stay in their boxes for now as I'll be working on the metal and resin predators in the first instance.
Predators clollector's set
2007 collector's edition predator (decloaking).
Pics and more details next time, then onto the marines!
;)
-
Back to Bas(e)-ics:
just to point out there is an Australian company with that name who make very nice resin bases... ;)

He means based on my resins bases matey. ::)
On the Colonial Marines front I have 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th squads ready to paint, with 5th & 6th squads currently in transit from Gateway (cheers Doug! :D). I also have 4 UA57 Sentry Guns (Guns a-d). primed and ready to get some!
Oh and also a dropship to build as well! :D
More later

I never got any damn sentry guns on my last order to EM-4! WHAT WAS I THINKING?

You will have no complaints, on price or quality matey. The old grenadier troopers still look fresh and well sculpted against modern ranges.
Dry brushed a further 20 of Geronimo's bases today, (tin bitz followed by bolt gun metal so far). Need to contact Ian and order another load of 25mm and 40mm sulacco bases, take advantage of the direct email sale offer.
Off to see Predators tomorrow night so doubt they'll be any update till Thursday.

As fellow deepest darkest Devonian, sea air good for the health dear boy, I would like the Commanders views on why he chose eM4 over the Woodbine Designs/Gripping Beasty ones? And also if he has any plans to actualy play a large game when this latest project is finished? Being at the very least in the same county, maybe able to muster the energy to amble along to a look see.....
-

Most of my EM-4 stuff comes PRE-Primed! Amazing. (not only primed, but also hardly any mold lines.
The sculpts are as good (or better) than anything coming out nowadays, and they've been around for years. Add the insanely low price, and it is a sure winner.
I did have one mini with a slighly miscast face (part of his nose and cheek are missing) but it didn't bother me at all, as I'm going to try and paint that as an acid burn.
As for the Fenris bases...I've ordered lots of resin bases from many companies. Fenris' stuff is at the top of that list. Always clean casts, no airbubbles, and basically ready for use (maybe slight cleaning)
Don't mean to derail the Commanders thread...but he's using the best stuff!

Well hello there Col. Aubrey.
My views are pretty simple on this:
i) I had a good few.
ii) They are lovely sculpts
iii) They are £1.25 a pop
iv) Doug has sold his soul to the devil re postage: ordered at 16:30 last night arrived this lunchtime.
Love the gripping beast ones too but they look a little more cartoony and I couldn't justify junking the copplestone sculpts in favour for albeit more accurate copies of colonial marines.
Supervike: Let Doug know about the miscast, he'll swop it for you no issue.
Suffice to say the dropship carrying the 5th ahd 6th squads touched down earlier today, troops disembarked and on the ready line marine! (Some nice additional sculpts I hadn't got).
Right Predators beckons so might do some more on the bases when I get back.

Not much of an update really, been a little side tracked with a 15mm project I just 'had' to start (Critical Mass Games). Will post them up at some stage.
Anyway, where was I?....
Predators: not bad, gun porn tastic, (AA12...yummy!) really felt like an 80's action film, (considering the original script was written back then), worth a watch but nothing special.
Project:
Tin bitz then boltgun metal, still to wash then detail as per the others. Also have a load more 25mm bases coming through from Fenris Games later this week so I'll be drybrushing for the forseeable future! ;)
Marines:
Well I may need one or two more for some headswops on the smart gun operator as they all look a little 'samey' although I;ve got a futurewars trooper with smart gun i my halo pile so he'll need a replacement head but I'll probably draft him back in.
Also found another two boxes of aliens, (don't ask price as I won't tell you :-X) in transit as we speak.
Rght back to those 15mm little sods, only another 14 to finish and that's over 60 painted in less than a week! :D

It's amazing how well Hasslefree's minis fit in there. Kendra looks like one of the gang.
The bases turned out fantastic. Very 'metal' and solid looking. A splash of color may not be out of line, but maybe you can use that green testors stuff for that.
Are your marines going to be transferred to the Fenris bases? I'm keeping mine on the original 20mm bases, mostly because I didn't want to wait any longer....
Since I've only got about 20 of the Em-4, I've decided to do 10 in one scheme, then the second group in a differeing scheme. I'm still trying to keep a more generic Aliens/Halo look going, so I can have multi purpose figs.
-
If your worried about the smart gunners looking the same, why not get a hold of the Copplestone female trooper pack? That has a female smart gunner. Also there is the mortar team has another SG in a "at ease" pose.

Still to finish that second lot, although I may have to find a belt sander to reduce their height as they are a little tallk, (even by Ian's admission they were more display than play). I'm just painting all the sci-fi bases I have, any I don't use I'll sell. As I say more of the marine sized bases coming through and yes I'm transfering them over, I don't care if they're on a themed base, that's the whole point.
Kendra's been in many fields of war, as a potential zombie hunter, resistance member against the machines, swat but I think she's found her home in the marine corps! ;)

Good idea, but I've got all the smart guns I need, if I add that copplestone one I've got back in with a head swop then it should be all sorted. All male on the smart guns but there you go. I've also ordered a few more marines for some headswops, oh and two more sentry guns.
You'll also see that a few marines have shotguns on their backs, much like Hicks, they like to kept them for close encounters. I'll be adding a few flame units too.
Right then, anyone want to see my facehugger idea? :D (it's not quite what you were thinking).

I believe they do, Maximus - which means: bring on the facehuggers!

I can't wait to see some of those marines painted and on those fantastic bases.
-
Em4 Miniatures, ordered Friday lunchtime arrived Saturday am :o (Cheers Doug great service as always).
I few more marines for head swops etc... oh and two more sentry guns. Will probably start painting the sentry guns later today.
Oh and I haven't forgotten about the face huggers, will see how I get on this afternoon.

Not that I can see from the website, (re: poses) but I've actually got four USCM sections now in troops so kinda done with these guys :D.

UA 571-C Remote Sentry weapons systems:
Em4's sentry guns.
VJ German Grey (practically black), highlighted up using VJ bassalt and German grey mix, highlighted further with VJ London grey, Badab black wash and a light highlight with bolt gun metal.
Just placed them on some painting bases and still to finish the targetting lenses/sights, (currently in white as a basecoat, torn between black red or green for the lenses on the guns, not made up my mind as yet). Ammo mag US Dark Green (VJ) need to highlight and wash these before 'm done.
Anyway enjoy, I'll finish these properly tomorrow.

Ok then...
FACEHUGGERS.
Well people have used lots of different ideas and inspirations for those cute little implanters, necromunda ripper swarms though to the firm favourite, the zombie hands and skaven tail.
Now I was originally going down that route, but something always looked a little off with those zombie combo conversions. The penny dropped about two months ago.....
Two zombie hands gives you ten digits, where as face huggers are 'thumb-less'
So I had a little search through one of the bits boxes I had and found a little joke/toy spider I pulled from a cracker years ago. Cut the abdomen off, trimmed it up a little, shortened the legs drilled the thorax and added a skaven tail.
Looked good but didn't have the right look, (the pastie styled carapace look and the ovipositor would need to be added, plus the embryo sacks, (either side of the last set of legs).
I also only had one of these toy spiders so went on a internet hunt...
Anyway:
Take one:
Add one of these:

Add a little bit of reference material:

A little bit of this:
A few putty shapers and 1 1/2 hours of comedy on BBC tonight as background and this is what you get:

Will paint soon, have a few more to make including some for medlab specimen tubes.

Looking great. Good sculpting and the spiders work perfectly with the long legs of the hugger. Only nitpick is the tails are a bit on the short side, but that's not a biggie.
Those things always give me the creeps...brrrrr...

Yeah true, but they're out of scale really anyway so you'll never get it 100%. (If I could find smaller spiders but these were hard enough to come by).
I think they definately serve purpose though cheers ;)
Hopefully once painted they will be extra creepy! :D

Wow those face huggers look fantastic! :-* Strong work Mark!
Can't wait to see how they look painted! :D Will they be based seperately or are they going to
be left off the base to sort of act as an alien infection/implant token for Akula's miniatures? lol

That's an amazing project. The bases and Sentry Guns are great. Can't wait to see some painted Marines.
Also a great job on the huggers, nice alternative to the Zombie hands, only criticism is the size. They' re way too big in my opinion.
And just to remark it, you can have Zombie Hand Huggers with the correct number of fingers, in fact you have to cut away the thumb in order to glue them together in the right angle.
However, keep 'em pictures coming.

They aren't 'way too big' they are a little out of scale but more than passable in my humble opinion. :D
The thing with zombie hand huggers, (8 digits not withstanding ;)) is the fingers are too stubby & short... so either way you have to compromise.
Finished the lenses and ammo boxes on the sentry guns today, may well paint up a test hugger later.
Keep you posted

Tarantula's eating garden worms????
Well my take on facehuggers actually...
Had these knocking about for a while unpainted, have been distracted with other projects but seeing those ace huggers from Hubba and Frank's harsh critique of my WIP over on Frothers, I got off my arse and painted a couple:

Yep, they look much more the part now they're paited up. How about a quick drybrush in a light biege to bring out the ribbing on the bodies and the knuckles on the legs?
Good job :D

And I love the lenses on that sentry gun! WOOF thats good!
