Title: Navarone?
Post by: Snate56 on 29 July 2010, 01:55:35 AM
Okay, I've looked around but can't find much.
Information on the book, The Guns of Navarone, say that it's a mythical place.
Looking up Navarone comes up with a hotel and a couple of street names.

Does anyone know if there is an actual location or a similar locale that would be good?
I'm running a scenario based on the Guns of Navarone and thought I would try to find maps of something suitable.

All I remember from the movie was that the guns were situated in a mountain on the island of Crete ( I think) and they were preventing the British Navy from evacuating the troops fromt he island. I think Gregory Peck lived (again I'm not sure).  It's been years since I've seen the movie.

Navarone was a fictitious island but the film was actually shot on small islands near Malta.  Anthony Quinn was the guy who lived thereabouts.  Great movie!

Another post I saw mentioned the Isle of Leros as the place it was filmed.

I guess I'll have to watch the movie again, then search for a suitable place! :)

I remember a scenario in an old role-playing magazine which was called The Nuns of Gavarone, where you had to rescue some nuns.

Always thought that was a great title.  :)

Actually the Battle for Leros is pretty Pulpy/ Navaroney on its own. FJ and Brandenburgers for the Germans,SBS and various others for the Brits. The British lost the island ,lots of reasons why in particular no aircover (which would have sunk the German landing craft). And why no aircover? No 'planes close enough with any duration (Beaufighters were there but against ME 109s they were shot down in droves). The aircover they could have had were American Lightings which the Americans would not release. There is rather a good book about all this called Churchill's Folly written by an author I cannot remember.............

Actually, I was going to write a small adventure called The Nuns Of Navarone! lol About rescuing nuns that were captured and being used in some terrible ceremony.

Never heard of the older magazine, but I got the idea from a poster on the Savage Worlds forum.

When I was at school we called it "The Guns We Never Owned". Of course you could always run a scenario called "The Buns of Navarone" in which a team of highly trained commando troops have to raid a German Field bakery on a Greek Island. Just a thought.

Or you could set it in a remote Scottish island and call it "The Guns of Macaroon".

Hi
If you still need info on Navaronne, try to get hold of 'Behind Enemy Lines' RPG - it has a Navarone supplement that covers the film & the book

Wiki says they also shot the movie on the island of Rhodes...

From Wiki:"The Greek island of Rhodes  provided locations and Quinn was so taken with the area that he bought land there in an area still called Anthony Quinn Bay. Some further scenes were shot on the islands of Gozo, near Malta, and Palmaria, in the Ligurian Sea."

Very interesting to me, because Gozo is where my father was born and I had no idea of that.

A while back I met a Greek gentlemen on Long Island who I was told fought against the Germans as a sniper in Greece.  Reminded me of Anthony Quinn.

Monday Night Production makes a "Guns of Minestrone" in 20mm.  See link below;

It could be a start to a pretty cool wargame.

The Gun set is quite nice, and very big.  They (Monday night productions) bought the rights to much of the scenic effects terrain after Ric and Wendy Schuldt divorced.  I still don't know why they don't make the basic bridge piece, only the ruined bridge.

Primarily Rhodes, I think. There is still a place there called Anthony Quinn Bay. I know this since it is a constant source of pride in my Greek uncle who lives there. :)

OK guys
here are some facts:
.- Parts of the movie were  filmed in the island of Rhodes. Remember the night scene with german vehicles gathering below the castle gate with the 4 towers. This is the actual castle gate of Rhodes. (they might have altered a little the location, but the gate is the actual one)
see some link:
http://www.intlistings.com/articles/2008/top-25-most-beautiful-castles-in-the-world/
.- the village where the outdoors marriage was filmed is an actual village filming
.- if the filming was taken place in Malta or other locations, this might be true. You have to check the details and acknowldgements after the end of the film.
.- the scenario is fictitious one. but the inspiration came from an actual battle, the battle of Leros, already mentioned. The scenario is a very pulpy one, involving a small band of specialists, local agents, double agents, some sort of romance and lots of action.

Some side information:
.- Anthony Quinn received the land free (or ridiculous low) charge to make touristic investments. Not yet realised.
.- The castle surrounds the actual old medieaval city which remains intact. The moat (empty) is also still visible!
In spite to the fact that there still arguments about the way the italians restored the castle, it is worth visiting the island of Rhodes in order to see and wander in the city and the St John's knights, plus the most famous  sea, sun, sand touristic attraction. And if you go it is also worth visiting the valley of the butterflies!
.- For those wanting to game a similar scenario, please note that Ian Weekly of battlements has made a resin castle gate exactly matching the impressive Rhodes castle gate! (a resin piece suitable for any scenario from medieval to pulp and modern times)

and Palmaria, in the Ligurian Sea."

I was in Palmaria island last week-end :) It's a military island (one side is property of italian navy and the other side is property of aereonautica, aviation). On the island there are a lot of bunkers and artillery position from WWII. It's a wonderful scenario...
The final scene of the movie was not settled in palmaria but in the west side of Tino island (unaccesible little island near palmaria, property of italian navy, training place for consubin - italian  version of seals to understand). I saw the Tino west side from my kayak many years ago.
