Title: New Board...
Post by: Uncle Mike on July 29, 2010, 05:05:43 PM
Been hard at work on a new 2x3 for Strange Aeons. Basically an estuary or dried up river bed/sand bar type thing. The greater majority of the board will be under water and I plan on making little canoes to run around in. Also, features several docks, sunken ruins and a vicious underwater creature. Just putting in all the foliage at the moment and building the sides...with any luck will start pouring the water later this afternoon...assuming I don't totally botch the job I'll post some pix in the coming days.

Awesome! If it will even be half as good as your arctic board it still rocks!

Different anyways...always try and do something new with a board. This one will need a fair bit of 'Darkest Africa' scenery at some point as well...some huts would make a great addition. And with that beast in the water would look kinda like a 'Glaki Cult' or what have you.

I am looking forward to seeing this one.

I have always wanted to build scenery with water in depth, but have never been able to find the right stuff to make it with here in Australia.

This board will be 'third times a charm' for me. Made my first water board with those yellow pellets years age...epic failure.  :-[ Then tried it again a few years later with that 'pour in' stuff...it never went hard, gathered dust like crazy and was full of fingerprints...let's call that one a partial failure as we played on it for a while. I will use actual clear resin for this one...I've had luck with the product in industrial applications so I hope it will work out...now all the hard work is almost done time to see if I'm as smart as I think... ???

The table is complete...mostly anyways. The water is poured and the reeds sealed and all that fun stuff. I'd say I'm about 90% happy with the result...which is well better than the other two attempts. Still got a few bubbles and a minor crack from the heating process...but was able to hide the imperfections with a bit of flock (frog spawn)...hope to get a few pix up in the coming days.

Got a chance to see the new board in person today, and happened to have my camera along!  The resin water came out extremely well - hope the pictures give you all a good sense.

The "frog spawn" looks great; as if totally planned that way.  The rest of the board is pretty fantastic as well.  How did the canoes work out?

Great stuff!  I hope we will get to see some photos of a game being played on this board

Really cool. Love the colors. The green and moist look of it fits the swampy theme very well. I assume rafts or boats will be used during the games to cross the pond of DOOM?
I'm also curious about the squares...what's up with them? They look handy for gaming.

Horrendously ancient stone tiles of BATHROOOOOOMMAYNESH?

I absolutely love the way the water turns out. It... reminds me of this one silty, green lake I'd gone to before. I've never been so disgusted of swimming in my life, so bonus points from me.

Thanx for the comments guys. The curious squares are supposed to be sunken ancient ruins...the effect worked about half as well as I would have liked. Should have darkened the lines a little more...still the effect is there in person...you just have to look a little harder.  ;)

The canoe rules have proven wildly popular with the local ruffians and will form the basis of the vehicle rules...watch for Rowboat! and Battle Barge to follow. Also, rules for water were needed...so, we wrote those up as well. Shallow and Deep water are the classifications. Only played a half dozen game so far but with the amount of fun generated watch out for vehicle rules in a coming expansion or possibly as a free-bee...guess it will depend on when they are ironed out fully. 8)

I'll try and get a few shots of a game in progress next time I'm playing. Also, may have a cool prototype canoe template whipped up by then...

Wow.  Even better than I had imagined.  :-*
I like the docks, especially the partially sunken ones at the bottom of the first pic.
Time to get ship building!
