Title: Wargames Factory Shock Troops - I've got a box!
Post by: Grimjack on 30 July 2010, 09:18:45 PM
At 3:23pm today, North Star FINALLY got a box of the new Shock Troops. Despite saying I would not buy a box, I decided to do so when faced by the 'real deal'  - although a bit 'meh' in one sense, they are actually the best plastics from WF I have seen so far. I like the tentacle head for some reason, wish I had more so I can have a group of fat Ood or Zoidbergs to grace my tabletop.

This may mean that I am the first person in the UK to own a box AND quite like them!

The large, single box from the States is mostly 'pre-ordered' by various people but, if you fancy a box or two, give them a ring on Monday or check out the website.

A tentacled face you say!

They 'block' that photo out on their site!

They do look better that I thought they would.

After feeling like I got burned on the Zombies, I'm still not quite sure though.

Do they assemble nicely?  How do they scale up to Hasslefree or Em-4's stuff?

They are pretty 'hefty' chaps, remind me of myself....Nice selection of weapons, some a bit 'samey', have not put one together yet as I am focussing on the Crimean War Russians on my workbench, then the Doctor Who stuff, especially as I now have the not-Amy from Heresy. Might be a month or two before I have a good look at them and put them together, think they look more in scale with GW, IMHO

If you don't use the flame units let me know as I'd be interested in those and those alone.

Cheers

I've received my 3 pre-order boxes too (Belgium).

I have never pre-ordered, but I certainly don't regret having done so on this occasion!

Apart from the quality of the models in their own right, there are enough heads on each sprue to finally pick up some of my Warzone figures again and provide them with these.  Combining both will give some great results, I'm sure, and for anyone worried about cost of SF/Weird War figures of other manufacturers: you can't beat these prices...

I've started assembling mine.  The arms are an improvement over earlier sets, the shoulder pads and attached weapons help immensely.  Looking forward to painting up a couple sprues worth this week.

If it wasn't for those pesky shoulder pads, I'd get some of these. I just couldn't face cutting a dozen or so pairs of them off.

Oh well, I'll save up for some Pig Irons instead  :)

Is the "tentacled" head that is blanked out modelled on the Dalek Sec/human hybrid from Dr Who, or is it more like Davy Jones from POTC 2?

If it's the Dr Who version, I'd be happy to take one off someone's hands  :)

I found some Steam Mecha that would look cool with these at www.toposolitario.com. BTW how many in a box and how much? I'm considering them for Wierd War II.

I'm sure I saw them listed on a site the other day at £14.50 a box with 18 figures but there were deals for buying multiple boxes etc so I'm not 100% sure.

I just ordered a box from the War Store.  They look pretty good to me.  I've had good luck converting GW plastics into all kinds of crazy things so more multi part 28mm plastics is a win win for me.  I also orderend AE Bounty which looks to be the type of Sci-Fi miniature game I've been looking for.

More like a D&D Mine Flayer I'd say.  Four tentacles curling symmetrically down.  The eyes are very spaced apart, almost like a hammerhead.

I don't know what it would be infringing on?  Maybe it was to give the sprue a air of mystery?  I don't think the heads are going to be used with the greatcoats, put together a zulu with one of the heads, looks pretty good actually.  If I get a chance at the end of the week, I'll post some pictures of squid head and my Space Soldaten.

Ok thanks, not Dalek Sec then. I wonder why they blacked it out, if it's not a serious copyright infringement  ???

No mystery about why the squid head was blocked out. It was held back as surprise-I think it came from an idea that got floated on the WF forum but that no one thought WF would actually include.

I was tempted by them, but the weapons put me off.  I ended up treating myself to Pig Iron figures, and I am very pleased with what I purchased.

so 6 out of 18....

that makes a regular platoon and one full zoidberg squad for 2 boxes

not a bad deal

maybe, but zoidbergs don't need gasmasks as aquatic race.  :)
the heads could also work with plastic Tau

Cthulhu-iod, cultist too?

Absolutely.... conversion fodder for my Strange Aeons lurkers.... or weird aliens for pulp sci-fi or hard sci-fi.

Whereas the set as such has a very futuristic WWII feel about it, I think I have about half a dozen ideas for paintschemes/uses, ranging from WWWII over Mutant Chronicles (alternative Bauhaus troops) to stuff set in the 40K universe....

As they are plastics, I do not worry too much about the somewhat limited range of viable poses - a sharp knife, some poly cement, and at bit of putty should be enough for creating the odd variation.

And then, of course, there is a lot of loose heads out there....  :D

I REALLY need to get this moving business done with, so I can get back to the things that REALLY matters...  ::)  ;)

you might hsve just convinced me to get a box of these, the problem with seeing them on the  wargmes factory website is that they look very generic, but your painting really brings an individuality to them

excellent job,

I just picked up a box of these at Gen Con Indy and I dig them. Lots of cool head choices. But they need backpacks! Luckily the plastic Bauhaus troopers from the boxed set of Warzone have separate packs that look perfect with the Shock Troops.

Now if Wargames Factory would make more British inspired Trenchers I'd actually start playing Warzone again.

Backpacks is a good idea for adding to the appearance of these. I think separate backpacks of all kinds are also available here and there, hmmm.... Somebody should tell WF to make a sprue of backpacks (with a few extra) to add to the sets  ;)

I'm not sure I'll take up Warzone again, allthough I have the Ult.Ed. - but I think I'll game in the Mutant Chronicles universe using rules form the Song series (Flying Lead combined with Mutants and Death Ray Guns). Warzone rules are nice, compared to some other systems, but still a bit on the 'heavy' side, ruleswise. I prefer faster game mechanics these days.

Just came back to my living quarters after working at the new 1:1 house all day - the study/office/hobby/gaming room just needs furniture, now, and I'll maybe have my first evening game there during next week!  :D (Depends on my gaming pal's new job - we MAY have to postpone until next weekend  :?  )
