Oh cool, what scale are they?
-
WOW, 48 of 'em ! That's a certain purchase for me. I'll start saving the $200.
They look excellent. Any new on expected availability?
-
Tere are some sculpts amongst them I would really like - to paint myself
-
If these are the same figures they were previewing last year, they'll be 32mm. Interesting they decided to go ahead with the whole line, as the negative reaction was fairly extreme. Mind you, that had a great deal to do with the choice to package two figures in an enormous box at $12.95, so this approach should be more palatable to both players and retailers.
Do wish they were going to sell unpainted metal as well though. It's not as though it'd be a new area for them (Anima Tactics are metal), but I suppose they're primarily targeting the boardgame crowd rather than hobbyists. Alas for those of us that are both!
-
Interesting, I had thought the line was canceled as well. $3.99 a pop is better than $12.95 for two figures. Still I would have liked if they either offered the miniatures unpainted for lower price, a full set with some extra cards thrown in it.
-
Badly painted plastic for $4.00?
There doesn't seem to be anything here that isn't already covered in many metal lines for less outlay. I don't see the appeal.
-
An interesting idea - A lot of the models look oddly-proportioned with tiny pea heads, however...
-
I havent seen them on display at the Event center yet, Chick. Best guess by asking the guys at FFG was they should all be released by Christmas and releasing 8 at a time for four months.
I too would have prefferred unpainted metals (as I am sure most of us here would since this is a hobby site) but considering what you get for the price, it isnt that bad. Hell, anima tactics models typically go for $10 a piece and while much better sculpts, they are still unpainted.
If I get them I am most assuredly repainting them as well. But considering the price I dont think its a horrible deal. Lots of unpainted models go for that much or more so its the best of both worlds if you prefer not to paint.
-
to me they look a bit weird, isn't? ???
The style makes me think in miniatures for railway modelism.
mm... probably weird is no the right word.
-
Pretty poor do, really. There's maybe half a dozen that I'd pick up if I saw them cheap at a show, but it'd be to repaint myself. And a fair few of them look like they've been used as dog chews.
Think I'd still rather get Artizan metals for £2 a fig.

Other than they look similar to the Game art. But I agree, 4 bucks is insane. To each their own, however.
-
Agreed. If any boardgamer asks me about Arkham miniatures, I'll say they should:
1. Buy ~100 pots of paint, brushes etc.
2. Practise painting for some five years.
3. Spend a few weeks browsing through several obscure garage stores with pulp ranges.
4. Pay for the minis and multiple international shipping batches. Half of them come only in multi-packs with unrelated minis.
5. Clean the casts.
6. Convert a couple of totally unavailable models using putty.
7. Build uniform bases.
8. Undercoat, paint and varnish for heavy duty gaming.
9. All done!
That's less than ten steps. Certainly beats buying a pre-painted, accurate Arkham character for $4. ::)
OK, seriously. My set should be ready this week. It took roughly a year among other projects, although it only contains the standard set characters without expansions. Surely a fun and challenging project for a serious lead collector, but the point is that serious lead collectors (with this much free hobby time) form less than 1% of FFG's target audience. This forum is probably not the place to get a representative sample of AH players.

Point taken.... ;D
-
They are very cool and 48 of them!!! Lovely!!!
-
I agree what Dolmot says, we are out of this product target, very probably the average boardgamer is more than happy to have a prepainted miniature to merely replace the cardboard token and don't expect things we consider a miniature model "must have".
I agree also $4 a piece is quite expensive, how many chars are in the basic box? 8? 10? in all, almost as expensive as the game :(
-
So buy 10 metal miniatures, spend time to enjoy painting them and play with nice miniatures...time and money well spent and Arkham Horror looks more nicely.
Replacing the monsters too...now that sounds both fantastic and insane. :-*
-
One of the projects I've considered doing, that and a leather and mahogany game board.

I'm with matakishi on this one.
Pass.
-
I really have to applaud the effort, but I'm not sure how these will look next to other miniature ranges, and $4 sounds a bit steep for one mini. Anyway, just my thoughts, but I'm glad they put these out, any support for gaming/Cthulhu is great!

That's an interesting idea. Now excuse me while I pack some minis for the upcoming AH/SA weekend...

They are selling like hotcakes here at Gencon...

very nice collection there
-
Agreed!
-
I like the idea, but they are poorly sculpted and $4 is a lot for poorly sculpted plastic.
Rob

I bought these:
-
and they actually ask money for those??!!!
-
Could you measure them sole-to-eye for us, and report here, please?
-
33mm for Mandy, 31 mm for Amanda.
-
Thanks, Backyardpatrol !
Really a shame they didn't make 'em smaller. But I'm a sucker, and I'll purchase them anyway.
Chick
-
I'm hearing on another board that the figures are considerably smaller. Rather close to true 28mm or even heroic 25mm.
-
They've been described to me as having the same base and scale as the pre-painted star wars miniatures.
-
Has anyone picked these up, and could you do a comparison shot. I'm very curious what they are.
-
Hopefully this gives you some idea. The minis are:
(Left to right)
Jim Culver (29mm to eye)
A Copplestone "Jolly Good Chap" (28.5mm to eye)
Luke Robinson (32-33mm to eye)
Diana Stanley (24mm to eye, crouched)
Wargames Factory British Soldier (26mm to eye)
The bases are 23mm across.

While I applaud the concept on these (a new line of Cthulhu-type investigators from many walks of life), I'm really disliking the execution on them the more I see them... :(
-
The painting or the sculpting (or both)?

The painting is irrelevant, as they can always be repainted. My problem is with the sculpts. They seem oddly-proportioned with soft detail.
-
I wonder if the Mansions of Madness figures will look any better. Some of the Fantasy Flight figures look pretty good.

TBH, the miniatures really look like plastic crap. Really don't see the worth in obtaining them, except for people who aren't into miniature gaming.
-
For pre-painted minis, particularly the paint quality they are awfully pricey.

I agree. They look like bad Hero Clix cast offs.
I really hope the Mansion of Madness ones are better.
-
I've found when working with pre-painted minis the sculpts can be quite good, but the paint is layered / caked on so thickly it obscures all of the detail.

Yeah, that is true at times...although it pains me to pay a more premium price for a painted mini, just to turn around and strip it.
It seems to me that there is nothing wrong with prepainted minis, but why can't those companies also produce the same mini, just without the paint? A limited run even...I can't see how that would cost anymore (although maybe additional packaging..)
I don't know, it just seems that the there should be a happy medium for both ready to play gamers, and painters.
-
MageKnight did that for a while. I was able amass a sizable collection by trading my painted figures. l would love it if Heroclix would do that as well. The unpainted packs were also much cheaper. Sometimes you can snag unpainted Star Wars or D&D plastic figures off of ebay. Folks in China selling off the unpainted rejects, or just snagging them when no one is looking. ;)
