Title: Little Lead Men's FINISH IT Blog
Post by: LittleLeadMen on 02 August 2010, 01:41:31 AM
Like many toy soldier enthusiasts, I often get distracted.  There's a lot of great stuff out there, all of which tempts me to start new projects.  After looking at my storage closet, I decided I was going to get pro-active and finally FINISH some stuff!

This is going to be a mixed blog, covering terrain, 40k, fantasy, and a number of historical minis.

For my first "FINISH IT", I decided to revisit my Wild West terrain.  I started this project about two years ago, and have worked on it here and there.  I recently moved to California, and found a new gaming group.  They were eager to play "Legends of the Old West", which encouraged me to finish this terrain collection.

So here, for my first FINISH IT project, is my Wild West Terrain:

You'll notice that the interiors are pretty open, for gameplay purposes.  At some point I would like to buy some more textured plastic card and add wood floors to these buildings.  Here is the next set of storefronts:

The only bar in town (for now), a small hole-in-the wall called the "Rattlesnake Saloon"

Plenty of room for outlaws in the jail:

I like to keep the interiors fairly open for figures to move through the building.

Some Crop areas and Fences.  The fences come from the Games Workshop set- a really good value- you get a lot of fences and stone walls in the pack.

What a wonderful set. The details are really impressive.
If you turn up with such stuff everytime you finish something, I'm definitely interested. 8)

Very, very nice!
Where did you find the goods for the stores?

Thanks!  @ Snate56:

It's been some time since I bought the materials for these, but if memory serves, most of the decorative goods came from either Hovel or HLBS.

Wonderful! What a great setup!

You're right about the GW walls and fences by the way - very useful for all sorts of periods, and nicely detailed too. One of their better products!

Most of the buildings are resin, right? What ranges do they come from? They paint up really, really well, but my only criticism is that the lack of floors in some of them is very noticable since there are other that have really good interiors. It wouldn't take long, I think, to add floors to these, and bring the whole town up to code! As I say, though, a minor quibble, because it all looks great.

Oh, the gaming mat - good colour match for dusty Old West. Where does it come from? I really need one for my own Old West town!

Yeah, I'll probably add wood floors at some point.  I just need some time to get down to the train store and buy some textured plastic card for flooring.

Most of the buildings are Hovels line.  There was another small manufacturer, but I can't find them anymore.  The textured gaming mat was from the Warstore. I think it was this one:  The WarGamer's Gaming Mat - 4' X 6' BROWN

Excellent! Thank you, LittleLeadMen. I've often thought about getting some of the buildings in the Hovels line, and seeing them painted up is probably the incentive I need. Thanks also for the info on the gaming mat - it looks just right for Old West gaming.

Very nicely done.

All of the buildings in the first post are from the Arnica, Montana line. I was the creator and original supplier but have since sold it to Hawgleg Publishing. It looks like they are back up and running with sales. At least the web site is up.

Really nice looking town.

@Skrapwelder - so, it's YOU that I have to thank for the Arnica buildings! I have two - the gun shop, and the five-sided saloon - and they are really nice models. The Gun Shop is assembled and ready for paint, the saloon is still waiting for some attention.
Nice to see them painted on a great thread like this!
