Title: Japanese ghost story
Post by: JMGraham on 03 August 2010, 07:28:12 PM
In case folks haven't seen these yet, these models will be released at GenCon next week by Wyrd miniatures.  Why the minis are intended for Malifaux (and therefore relatively pricey), they look perfect for taking one's horror adventures to Japan.

I have a movie called "Chinese Ghost Story"  (featuresa a giant tongue that gets into a spa, and starts lapping and licking at the nekkid girls swimming in the jacuzzi)  then it breaks into Kung Fu action. (the tongue had some moves)

Unfamiliar with "Japanese Ghost Story", but those figures sure look nice.

Kwaidan - Good creepy factor. I was fortunate enough to see it in a theater when I was younger.

Not a ghost story, per se, but you might consider a look at Jigoku, in  a similar vein.

Look for the writings of Lafcadio Hearn, an American who lived and wrote on Japanese subjects. Kwaidan is probably his best known book. Tales of strange things. The movie is good and tells several stories also in the book.

By western standards, Japanese folklore is filled with an amazing assortment of odd and terrifying things. Still probably no stranger than the pantheon of English fairy folk, just different.
