Well as the title says I am painting up the Games Workshop gamesday sorcerer, and I will be entering him into the warhammer fantasy battle single mini catergory.
So far so good I think, skin is done. Picture is poorly lit. I have gone with a very pink skin as a middle ground blending down to red on the mutations on his lower body and blending up to white on the horns, but making sure it is continuous giving him a living vessel of chaos feel, I hope, I like it anyway. This is him so far
I will get a better picture tomorrow when i have more time, didn't have chance after krav maga tonight

That looks fantastic, though is the contrast strong enough from shade to highlight? It looks a little flat in the pictures thats all.

I had pasta.....
-
Learnt a new way to break a frontal choke involving inserting fingers into the eye socket and twisting the subject's head, pasta would have been nice though
-
I had sausage
-
And what, pray, is on tonights menu?
-
couple of potatos probably, pure filth!
-
Looks good to me, keep it up and best of look.
Cheers

@ Dijit
better picture below which will hopefully show there is actually a lot of contrast, thanks for the encouragement though pal
@ Steve
Thanks mate, will be my 2nd ever time of entering hopefully i can go one better than last year when i managed to get to the last round of judging in the WFB monster catergory.
Better picture as promised

amasing what proper lighting does!
Think I will do a little work on the "sore" area around the handeye after kettlebells and then I will begin work on the robes
-
little more work done, not really very happy with these robes, may have to redo them

It certainly is a strange looking model. One thing I've heard about the Golden Daemons is you do better with in print models. Me I seem to always be stuck in the past. I'm always painting OOP models because I'm so slow, they were new when I bought them...
Not sure if using a rare model will affect your chances negatively...
Good luck!
-
Yes that looks much better. The is leagues ahead of anything I could to do, very impressive.
Duncan
-
Well, win or lose, you're going to have a fantastic looking miniature.
I really like that sculpt, and the paintjob is amazing.
-
I like the base... looks a lot like a paint pot. How did you create it?
;D
Sorry... I think you've done a very nice job so far. Really like how the eye in the hand turned out and the sickly skin. Just one thing - the shadowing could be a bit browner in places, to darken it a bit and add contrast. Nit picking, but seeing how you're entering it in a competition I think it's warranted. =)
Really like the colour you've picked for the robes!
-
@ Duncan
Told you the picture was pants, but you shouldnt think like that, I have only been painting a little over 2 years and I just push my boundaries everytime I paint trying out new things and with that you improve. If I can do it you can do it Duncan
@ supervike
Thanks, the model sculpt has gotten mixed reviews, I initially didn't like it but I have two of them (a mate who hated it gave me his) but once I took it out of the packet prepped it and started to paint it I love it, hopefully the end result will be good enough.
@ phreedh
yeah the base is my take at a disc of tzeentch :P I am thinking of adding some shadows in the form of a mix of ogryn flesh wash and a squid pink glaze, in areas such as the armpits and under the biceps as I dont think that the purple I use at the moment gives a good enough shadow

Thanks for the optimism, but I've been painting for almost 19 years now :? True I have improved vastly, but not reached the stage were I attempt entering a golden demon, maybe in another 19 years or so ;)

Did some extra work on the turquoise part of robes and they are now done and I did some extra shading on the skin to add a little more definition. I am a hell of a lot happier with it tonight than I was last night :D

thoughts?
-
Looking very nice - great, unnatural (in a good chaosy way) skintones!
Are the horns finished? Might be the camera but they seem to blend into his forehead a bit - apologies if that was the intention! :D
-
Even better! I think it looks very good, and never mind Thants... the blended horns look cool! =D
-
@ Thantsants
Thanks, that was the exact effect I was going with the skin and apparently I have acheived that :D With the horns blending into his forehead, again that was the objective, I wanted the tenticles and horns to all blend into the flesh to make it look as if the mutations are growths from his original body rather than just bits stuck on as you tend to see, artistic interpretation perhaps? which would be all fine and well if i was an artist lol
@ phreedh
Thanks, I feel it is really starting to take shape in both my mind and on the model
-
It looks absolutely great Dee :)
Just a question, do you always keep your models this "clean" (theres no splash of colour anywhere), or is its just because you're posting the progress pics?
-
When you say clean I assume overspill of the colours onto the unpainted areas, then yes I always keep my models this clean, more so for a "display" piece mate, I work on the assumption that if you discipline yourself to not be messy even at the start of a paint job, you won't have to be careful at a later stage when being messy could result in an "OH MY GOD I HAVE RUINED IT!" moment, it become 2nd nature and you paint and don't have to think. It is something I take from my experience with martial arts, you drill so that when you fight you don't have to waste vital milliseconds thinking what to do.
If thats not what you meant then well that was a waste of an explanation :D
-
That's exactly what I meant :)
As I've thought of it the same way as you, at least when I paint stuff that's supposed to be marvelous and not just a gaming fig out of 300 (like a Zulu or whatever), I needed to ask :)
-
artistic interpretation perhaps? which would be all fine and well if i was an artist
Nice effect and I like your artistic interpretation! I would say there is plenty of fine artistry evident in your work on this mini! :D
I could do with practicing blending to get it to a similar high standeard...
-
well my technique is I blend with glazes, very much a mixure of traditional wet blending and actual glazing all thrown into one paint filled hell hole :D Is acutally fairly simple once you get down to it, and quick as long as you have a hair dryer sat next to you. And if i am perfectly honest I prefer how it looks to the wet blended look I feel I have more control over where colour goes as well as the blend being almost seemless
-
Right this is the work done so far today, need to take a hour or so for a break i am starting to go bosseyed
still to be done, the leather straps and glove (basecoated), ring and gem, skulls, string holding skull, buckles, shoes, freehand on robes.......
I am starting to feel good about this model
-
I think we all are starting to get a good feeling...
Cant wait to see what you do with the robes....
-
well originally I was going to do gold/yellow runes on it but as you well know the new changeling model has that and I am loathed to do it now as it will just look like I ripped off their paintjob :-[
-
Right we are finished, and best of all it is only magnetised to the plinth so i will be able to use him in games :D

Think i am rather pleased with that to be honest, it turned out how I orignally envisaged more or less, and thanks to all those that put their feedback and idea in to make it just that little bit better.
So thoughts?

Looks great, I have never been crazy about that mini but your paint job is top-notch! Be proud of your hard work!
-
Looks good, definitely pink...
To win the old GD you need a conversion generally, almost need to do some green stuff sculpting. You also need to do free hand to prove you got that skill. The other thing they look for is super smooth blends and of course creativity. Everyone has seen a black chaos space marine or a red bloodletter. You have to come tenfold strong with the bomb, to quote Dr. J.
Cheers,
-
Nice, very nice! :D
-
Shame you aren't Spanish....
-
That's a damn fine piece of work - certainly miles ahead of my meager paintbrush fumblings - and I do really like that mini as well. The snowy base sets the whole thing off very nicely indeed too. Best of luck, fella.
-
@ Goon
Thanks, I think this is one of the few models I have painted that I am infact rather proud of
@ Muskie
Sadly my conversion skills are on the wrong side of crap. Not sure how this will sound but I am not entering to win, I enter for a laugh, if it wasn't for the badgerings of my friends I wouldn't enter, if I were to win well that would be awesome but I am a realist and know from my first time of entering last year that the competition is rather stiff, I never expect anything, that way I am never disspointed only ever pleasantly surprised, which was why my giant getting through to the final round of judging last year gave me goosebumps :D

You totally lost me here mate, I am guessing that a good thing, so I am just going to smile, nod, pretend I know what you mean and say thanks :D
@ phreedh
Thanks
@ Col Aubrey Bagshot
Si Señor, paella with that?
@ Funghy-Fipps
Thanks, the mini is very marmite I agree everyone I know either really likes it or really hates it, not sure I am yet to find someone in the middle ground. And thanks, will need all the luck in the world for the single mini comp, reckon its one of the harder ones for sure, although I have a lack of experience only ever having been to 1 Games Day and that was last year
-
It looks really good! Hope you do well with it, as you deserve :)

I'm working on a chaos sorcerer too. It is an old model and so far is coming along pretty good, it won't have any freehand and it isn't converted. About as fancy as it gets is some extreme highlights and a resin skull base.

@ Silversixx
Thanks, I maintain that I am not overly concerned if I do well at GD my friend, I hope that I get through the first round of judging but other than that I am only concerned that I have a nice looking model that fits in with my warriors of chaos army, which it does, my aim is to get every unit entered into GD at some stage.
@ Muskie
Think being a limey that was a tad wasted on me my friend but thanks. I remember that model from when I was knee high to a grasshopper, shame I didn't start painting back then I could be an awesome painter by now :)
-
Looking very beautiful in an unnatural way - love the contrast between the snow and the angry pink of hs extremities poor old pinkies and tentricles!
Great job and what a good idea to magnetise the base so you could game and display the little fella! 8)
-
Very nicely done paint job 8) whats your recipe for snow as its very effective, oh and good luck :)
-
@ Thantsants
Thanks, yeah I thought that was a rather savy move with the magnet :D
@ Old Brush
Thank, my snow I mix water, pva and baking soda together until i get a nice thick paste, and then "paint" on with a brush, if you want some fresh powdered snow as well just sprinkle extra baking soda on the areas once on the base.

Result from Golden Demon......
finished in the top echolons of the single miniature category not sure where but got myself a certificate, and my model on the GW site (albiet a terrible picture of it)

With the ogres I have a few sour grapes.....I finsihed 4th, and the reson for it.......too much blood on my entry when the girl asked how close it was between her and I which is fair enough there probably is for all the kids, now I wasn't that worried about it but on the way home my friend had taken some pictures of the various entiries with his £1000 camera so I managed to look at her entry VERY closely I'm sorry but I honestly think I was robbed and it makes me a little sad, but anyway always next year.

Very nice! I take it there were 1000s of people.
-
Nice touch with the yellow snow! =)

@ photo
Yes my friend there was plenty people...now I look back at it I am rather proud I got 4th with the ogres in regiment and in the top 10 with the sorc in single mini
@ phreedh
That was the brain child of my friend Col Aubrey Bagshot. The blood and probably that as well cost me 3rd place due to adding the little added feeling of terror, if I knew what I knew now before I did that I would still do it again without a shadow of a doubt.
