It’s been a long time since we’ve played contemptible Little Armies. A long, LONG time. I kind of gave up on it a while back and moved on to other things. Hearing there was a new edition out got me thinking about it again. Last night I finally dusted off the old rule book and busted out the toys to play a quick game set in East Africa 1915.
You can read a complete report of the action (and see all the pics) on my blog:

Here are a few teaser pics:

If there’s anyone out there familiar with both the second and third editions I’m curious to know what has been changed…?
-
I think I am FAIRLY familiar with it. :D
Biggest change is in combat. Ranged combat is now a 2-step process instead of one. Rolling to hit occurs, then determining casualties.
Not every hit translates to a casualty. And the "To Hit" portion takes into account the Tactical Rating of the Target unit. A unit with a higher Tac rating is tougher to hit.
Other than that, it is mostly clarifications and a reorganization of the rulebook.
And the game looks great. Thanks for posting.

Lovely as always Tim. Your stuff has such a distinctive look, you make me want to start my collection over again each time I visit your blog :)

Thanks Guys!
Richard - how about close combat? Pretty much the same? One thing we were never really clear on in the 2nd edition was, on a subsequent round that two units are engaged in close combat, if individuals moving to contact opposing figures were subject to defensive fire (because they were moving) or if figures could disengage and wander away - or engage other troops...?!
Is it still move OR Fire (which I actually like - though many around here absolutely HATED the idea)? Another thing we were never really clear on was if PART of a unit moves can those that remained still fire?
If I can get the guys fired up about the era again I'll eventually break down and pick up the new edition...
Do the old lists still jive with the new edition (not that we ever paid TOO MUCH attention to them...) or are there all new lists in the new book?
Matakishi - the feeling is mutual. Every time I visit the Tea House I am at risk of veering off into new projects completely unrelated to what I'm currently working on. However, your ability to plan, organize and stick to a project has always been an inspiration to me! Thank you!

Close Combat is still the same: To answer the questions regarding it... Figures already engaged in close combat cannot use defensive fire. Figures that are contacted during the turn but were not engaged at the start of the turn can defensive fire. Figures engaged in close combat can move away without penalty.
Yes it is still move or fire. And yes, if part of a unit moves the other part can still fire.

Cheers!
The figures? The British infantry, KAR askaris, and the German Schutztruppe are all figures I made myself (made masters out of green stuff, made moulds, cast...)
