Here are the latest sculpts from the very talented Matthew Bickley. More Mexicans for the army of 1836.
Mexican Infantry regiments were organised usually as eight companies; six fusileers, one grenadier (Grenado) and one light infantry company (The Cazadores).
The Cazadores were drawn from the best shots in the regiment and better equipped. Evidence suggests that these men were sometimes armed with surplus British black leather rifles equipment and the Baker Rifle.

The characterization that the sculptor acheives is incredible.
I don't think I will be able to resist much longer!
-
Great stuff Nick, more stunning work from Mr. Bickley Jnr.
Resistance is becoming futile.
-
Lovely stuff, Nick. Love the personality with this batch.

All these blokes seem so unhappy... :'(

Some absolutely astonishing mini's.
Berry, berry, nice.

Superb sculpts. Lots and lots to look forward to here - and I still have no interest in the period.

They look fantastic. I'm really fond of the Captain and the bugler! These sculpts really have character.
-
Cracking stuff and as has already been said the characterisations are great!

Hi Nick,

After (just slightly) my main temporal interest in that theater but I agree with the quality comments on the sculpts. Wonderful... Very tempting...
Gracias,

always beautiful :-*. I particularly like the voltigeurs. the choice of weapons is good.
could you tell the sculptor to stop playing in my head lol lol I will not have done otherwise, if I could sculpt as well.
-
Such characterful faces! :-*
-
I have to agree, love the faces - the bugler is a peach!
-
Lovely stuff
-
Terrific sculpts, just splendid!
Grumpy Gomez doesn't look like he's having a very good day, does he? lol

Just two small question… Is there any difference of color on the Cazadores uniforms or is it basically the same color? And which type of artillery piece would you suggest using for the Alamo period?
-
Cazadores would have a green shako pompom (instead of red or the national colours of red/white/green), and the cords on the shako would be green, rather than yellow (fusiliers) or red (grenadiers).
Osprey book says "Preference" companies (grenadier and light companies) had a sardineta vertical flash instead of the standard three-button cuff arrangement (and a double flash for the elite companies of grenadier or light battalions).
On the other hand, an illustration in 'Texian Illiad' shows a Cazador with the standard cuff arrangement (as do Nick's figures), so I'm not sure which is true. ???
-
Interestingly, this picture of cazadores of various sorts shows them with both the sardineta and the buttons, rather than instead of as in the Osprey book:

Cazador of the Aldama Battalion.

Thanks Plynkes 8)

Stunning. :D
-
Absolutely stunning!! How would these figures scale up to Front Rank Napoleonics? I could see them being used as Spanish deserters in the Peninsular Campaign, or am I off base??? Please let me know as I could see myself getting them as well.

I was wondering the same thing Hitman.
Also are the mounted figures riders cast on the horse or can you switch them off the horses they come with?
-
The horses and riders are separate pieces

Senor Plynkes has covered the Cazadore uniform well with the Zaboly colour plate. Some sources say the Osprey book is not accurate(no surprises there) lol. With the Mexican army anything goes, the uniforms vary from 1820's pattern tunics to the two styles worn during the 1830's. There is the double breasted style or single breasted coatee (which I have gone with). The only real important point is the green pompom and cords on the helmet to denote Cazadores.
Its probable that many of the Cazadores were equipped with the standard Brown Bess musket, not everybody was issued a Baker Rifle, so you can supplement them with basic infantry figures painted with appropriate green pompom.
Artillery pieces should be French Napoleonic Gribeauval style. The carriage would be just oiled wood, not painted and the limbers pulled by oxen. The pieces were mostly 6 or 8pdrs with several 12pdrs.
I am using Front Rank guns for mine as they fit well alongside the figures, but you could just as well use OG or Foundry guns.
-
Excellent models Malamute.
Grumpy looks like McClure ( which is great ) from the Blueberry comics.

How do the figures look with Front Rank (or other ranges for that matter) does anone have some comparison pics?
I am using figures from Front Rank and Perry's (with a few of the later Foundry) for my Napoleonics and as others have suggested I was thinking of dual use for these as a Spanish unit.
(The other use being in an 1830's (fictional) setting with the French, British, Americans and Spanish all furtively poking around in Mexico - all a bit vague at the moment)

They will compare favourably alongside Perry, Artizan and Front Rank.
Check out the Pastry War o 1838, its alot closer to your fictional setting than you might imagine, with the French landing in Mexico.... :)

Which one? Cause those three are nothing a like ??? lol
I'd order a pack to check it out but that's a lot of bother and time and money to come across the pond.Does anyone in the US carry theses figures? Anyone got a comparison pic?
Sorry to be a pain but I have two other( $100+) batches of figures that are set aside for the next flea market(where I probably won't get $50 for them) because of bad advice on how they scale with other figures.
Pete
sorry about the quote, can't undo it
-
Thanks for the info Nick 8)
@ fitterpete, you can always try to sell your unwanted figures in the Bazaar of Obscurities here on LAF... you might have a better price for them
-
Could only find this FR foot figure but hopefully shows that they are indeed a good match. I stood him on the same coin as the BH figures (a 2p piece).
