Title: Another Nap question -- French Hussar coat?
Post by: Schogun on 21 August 2010, 08:32:22 PM
(See photo below) The Perry Hussar figure (at least I think it's a Hussar based on his headgear) on the right is wearing a short waisted, long tailed coat over his dolman, almost like a Dragoon's coat. What is this and what color is this typically? It's shown here as dark blue (yes?).

Thanks

Hmm -- the photo's small here. You can see it better on the Perry site or in my flickr photostream: http://www.flickr.com/photos/schogun/4913376705/sizes/l/in/photostream/

I'm not claiming to be a expert but..
The two figures in bicorne seem to be in the dark blue coat/light blue facings of aidecamps. The one in hussar kit has a light blue armband so could be from a hussar regiment on detached service.I think the one your asking about then would be aide in another version of the aide uniform as the coat and facing colors are the same. Hope that helps.

Personally, I believe that the ribbons on the left arm indicate that all four standing figures are aide-de-camps.  The first and third wear the standard uniform.

As in all things Napoleonic, many Generals and Marshall's had their own uniforms made and lots of "hussar-ish" uniforms were among them.

I would assume the gentlemen on the farthest right is wearing dark blue.

Seems to me aide-de-camps is one of those subjects which has really never been dealt with in a lot of detail and therefore there is not a lot of information, at least that I am aware of.

Here are a couple of links that may be of help.  The first one connects to a site that displays full scans of the famous Funcken books on Napoleonic uniforms.

The other is more concerned with the 100 Days but has some more nice uniform artwork.

As an example, here's a plate with several of Ney's ADC's, including one dressed à la Hussarde.  You can also see the ADC's brassard on the left arm of the rightmost figure.

Thanks Archangel1. I already found those links when I searched for ADC pictures. It was the coat on the Hussar that threw me.
