Title: Battle at Kleine-Klumpendorf!
Post by: jamesmanto on 23 August 2010, 03:38:07 PM
Well we finally got some SYW troops on the table after a long time and had a bash up. Still struggling with the learning curve with the rules and all the pre-game discussion about troop stats went out the window but fun was had and it is a pretty period to play.

Lots of pictures here: http://rabbitsinmybasement.blogspot.com/2010/08/black-powder-at-kleine-klumpendorf.html

Magnificent.

Are the Black Powder mechanics counting units (bases/stands) like Warmaster and such, or are they concerned with the actual number of figures (like Warhammer, and the likes)?

I am tempted to get some new rulesets for horse/musket gaming and try them out with my 1:72 Naps.

Thanks. Although I think Keith's troops look much nicer than my old Prussians. But they're mine and they're painted.

Black Powder is a very adaptable set of rules. You just have to decide upon what a 'standard' sized unit is and then 'small and 'large' units are based upon that.

The frontage of your standard sized unit is the most critical so if one fellow shows up with a 30 figure battalion based with 15mm frontage per figure and the other fellow's army is built around 24 figure battalions based on a 20mm/fig frontage you're OK. Both battalions have approximately the same frontage.

And of course this means that you can fiddle with the number figures per stand to get the aesthetic effect you wish (like including casualties or mounted officers etc.) or if you're short a figure or three or if you want to include a few extra figures because like me you hate leaving odd figures in the box it doesn't matter.

So unit/stands it is - very much befitting for large scale batles with small scale soldiers.

I may have to give Black Powder a go at some point. I also consider Warlord Games' Pike and Shotte, although they are probably better for the 17th century than the 18th and 19th.

And then there's Sharp Practice...

Sharp Practice is much smaller scale. Companies or half-companies of 8-10 figures lead by NCOs and officers. fun game though. There are three videos up on Youtube in which the author explains some of the basics.
