I'm not interested in space orks, elves, hobbits and so on but what are the best and most complete alien races in 28mm?
The Tau would have to be first as the most complete range.
There is also Spugs and Drantakhs but what else?
-
Oh and I forgot Karmans, Therians and Cogs.
-
And Tyranids 8)
-
Kryomek.

And quite a few others too.
-
Wow, like your necrons :-*
Nice work
-
And Tyranids 8)
Seconded. Tyranids are probably the single best race the Evil Empire have pieced together out of various scifi staples.
From Genestealer Cults to the full blown Hive Fleets they have so many different facets that I'd quite happily include them in any scifi setting. Also as the models aren't humanoid they don't suffer from the Heroic Scale mishapen style of so many of the EEs range so you can put any companies models up against them.
I'm not to keen on some of the slight changes to their background recently, but that's nothing out of the ordinary, not content with their less than perfect game they have begun to erode their only real strength, the back story and characters. Which is sad because while I have pretty much given up on the company model and rules wise after some 15 years the background is still something which holds a lot in my heart and mind.

I agree with Lowtardog: QUAR!!!!
-
QUAR!!!!
-
@ Lowtardog,
That tank with the tracks on your first Quar picture is sweet. where does it come from?

The Brigade Games aliens are pretty cool...
...but I have to say Grymn...
But you can't forget the 'nids...

-
Who makes the robots and the greys in your images?
Thanks
Matakishi- Robots are Scotia Grendel, Em-4 and Copplestone. Greys are OOP.
Please don't quote huge swathes of text and/or pics to ask a short question.
-
Well I created some of the 5150 aliens the Grath are cool and the rest play pretty good. som pics of my collection. (Im have a huge grath army and will get pics done one day), heres a small piece of my collection

@ Lowtardog,

Zombie smith, he doesnt have them on his site but drop him an e-mail :)
-
Shame the greys are OOP, I love them! Especially the sinister ones in the chairs.
-
The Greys aren't OOP (as far as I can tell):
http://griffinminiatures.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=33
No greys in chairs though...
-
The griffin greys are awful, tengu all the way!!
-
The Tengu greys are pretty good but they lack weapons, which limits their wargaming use unless you were to have them using psychic powers or something...
-
I like the Thrade by 3d-miniatures. Nids and Tau but not for 40k.
-
Has to be Quar :-*

Holy crap, that is amazing...
-
Sorry for the mega-bump, but I've just re-read the thread and paid more attention to the Quar. Now exploring the Zombiesmith site and I love them! Nice amount of back story and a rule set using my favourite base rules - Song of Blades and Heroes. Need to get involved!
-
I just ordered the spluggs, ow whatever there are called - reasond ?
1. Cheap
2. good looking aliens
3.Nice poses and weapons, nothing silly ot strange
4.Good selection on types, from troops to heavy weapons etc.
Hope to use them one day for a alien invasion game, x-com etc
-

...
They look great, they look a bit like Treens from the old Dan Dare days. Now, a 'Grey' alien in a floating chair would make a pretty good Mekon I figure...
S**t, I've just talked myself into a Dan Dare project.
-
Only because i'm repainting them at present i vote for The Growlers and Zykhee from Vor, when they came out there was nothing else out there like them.
Thanks Jeff
-
Kroot, Tau (which also make good 'Grays'), all the various robots (Necrons, both old and new; EM-4/Grenadier/Copplestone 'terminator' style guys; daleks etc.), greys. Quar. Some of the races from AE: Bounty are pretty cool.
I know you're not interested in Eldar and the like, but the old 2nd ed. stuff actually works well for Victorian Sci-Fi, especially the old rangers (scouts) and the like.
And of course, there's some nice stuff to be found in the Star Wars cmg and the heroclix line.
-
Grymn!
Good old space-Dwarves, but far superior to any others I've seen, with the probable exception of the Texan Scrunts.
I do like the Tau though - the only 40K stuff I buy (and then mostly only the plastic stuff at cheapo prices off E-Bay).
-
AT-43 - Therians, Cogs and Karmans - They have a fleshed out backstory, different troop types, vehicles .... and did I mention they were pre-painted. ;)
Clickies - Aliens and Halo Covenant.
Otherwise SPUGS and Starship Trropers Skinnies.
-
I like the Thrade by 3d-miniatures. Nids and Tau but not for 40k.
Thrade are awesome: just pulpy enough, and just realistic enough. And their space suits look good in Star Trek colors. :)
-
Brigade Games alien Invasion. http://www.brigadegames.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=BGAHSL&Category_Code=BGADVAI I haven't painted mine yet.
These do not seem to be available anymore. :(
-
I'd have to go with Zombiesmith too. Not only are there the Quar, they've also got Greys (with different guns, too), his A7D12 fun mix of different alien sculpts, and now the new "Storm of Steel" line.

-
Kroot!
Yes! :D
I think they might be the best thing to come out of the Tau range (which is pretty good regardless.) I plan to model some to look slightly like these fellas from Mass Effect: http://masseffect.wikia.com/wiki/Turian
-
Void/Urban War: Koralon
keep loving them Tyranids :)

Alien Armor

Alien Spacecraft

Hope that helps,

Somebody mentioned Kroot, and I second it - not for games of 40K, but simply because I think the models are nice (with lots of options), and they definitely look alien. 'Nids, of course, for the pure 'squash the insect' thing.
-
I would have loved to have been able to field a Zoat army, they're just simply brilliant! I don't play many alien armies, but I used to love my Genestealer cult for 2nd Ed 40K. Kurasan's 15mm Vespulid range is also quite nice; jet-powered wasps!
-
Brigade Games alien Invasion
These do not seem to be available anymore. :(
I asked over to the BG site but could not get any answer there were some very nice vehicles in that line.
-
Good Call Barrass, was gona say VORs too :)
here's my Newly painted Deathmaw (base sucks tho)

That one alien race from Infinity makes really good turians with hardly any effort, plus they're slightly taller and thinner than most 28mm humans making that dimension right too.

I suppose the way I worded that was a bit confusing; my intention is to model more high-tech Kroot (because I like Kroot :D ), taking some inspiration from the Turians.
I do remember seeing those Infinity models though, and they would work quite well for Turians. However, as the last thing I need is another project... lol
-
Whoa!!!
Late again, but what a super thread!!!!
These guys remind me of the Gorns from Star Trek the original series.

Ah! No worries there lol. I can certainly relate.
I have one for doing the conversion, but haven't gotten around to sculpting the head fringe and modifying the armour up a bit more Turian-esque. My friends and I will be doing a ME universe rpg at some point and I wanted to tailor a figure for my character. :)

Kryomek!

I'm working on an alien mob form a backwater spaceport like Mos Eisely or something similar. I appreciate having all these new names in one place.
Cheers.
-
Infinity latest release : the Tohaa
Alien but with human features: creepy imho
-
Nice resurrection!
What happens with Griffin? I could do with some greys for my scifi Galaxtar project, and perhaps some cravids for my fantasy Ajsalium project, too (small aberrations).
-
It's a shame the black scorpion ones are not available at the moment. They are pretty ace miniatures.

The new Martians from Jim Bibbly must be mentioned in any discussion of aliens!
-
I like those Martians. :D
-
Acheson Creations has some cool George Pal's 'War of the Worlds' inspired Martians that they call Kabasu. They seem to have been originally commissioned by Ed Teixeira for his '5150' sci-fi combat game.
They also have some armed centipede aliens called the Wormric. Both are reasonably priced.
Denizen Miniatures has a pretty complete line of some 25mm armored military aliens called the Ventaurans that look pretty good. They also have the K'hiff (the jackal headed aliens in monk's robes who played the villains in C J Cheryyh's Chanur novels). They will be a little small next to 28-32mm figs, but then they are aliens.
Both can be seen in Denizen's Hot Link discouraging gallery.
http://www.denizenminiatures.co.uk/25mm_new/sf_gallery.htm
Khurasan Miniatures has the Garn who are 28mm tyrannosaurus-headed lizard men with weapons and armor.
(http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/garn.jpg) (http://khurasanminiatures.tripod.com/ttc608.jpg)
He also has some vinegaroon like aliens called the Arachnians.

Superfigs (sold by Old Glory) has some 1960's silver age aliens called "The Host" that look almost like Jack Kirby drew them, and they have a nifty war robot to boot! They are chunky but...'characterful' ! Very much in the 'Cheap and Cheerful' $2-$5 vein of figs.
(http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/prodimages/Superfigs/alien6-painted.jpg)(http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/prodimages/Superfigs/alien7-painted.jpg)(http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/prodimages/superfigs/alien1.jpg)(http://images.frpgames.org/products/product_35870.jpg)(http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/prodimages/Superfigs/alien8-painted.jpg)(http://images.frpgames.org/products/product_35871.jpg)(http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/prodimages/superfigs/alien2.jpg)(http://www.oldgloryminiatures.com/prodimages/superfigs/alien5.jpg)(http://www.oldglory25s.com/images/vehicle03-painted-big.jpg)

I quite like these guys. Rar from regiment games. (Kilrathi anyone?)
There are twenty different miniatures so there's quite a few.
Regiments Drantakh as well are pretty cool.
Still love the nids though. I have quite a bunch of the old school models.
-
I may well have missed it, but there doesn't seem to be a mention in this thread yet of Black Hat's Cobalt-1 aliens (which is a bit odd since it's such an old thread):
http://www.blackhat.co.uk/online_shop/index.php?cPath=121_182
Small lines but fairly comprehensive, infantrywise. No vehicles tho. GW Ork vehicles would suit the Ar-Men fairly well and the Kryomek biovehicles should go decently with the Palansi.
There's also a long discussion about aliens for use in conjunction with Defiance: Vital Ground on MJ12 Games forum which may mention something not yet to be found here:
http://www.mj12games.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1135
