Title: Big candle holders
Post by: JollyBob on 05 September 2010, 05:46:14 PM
Where can I get some?  ???

I'm after a couple like the pair from this GW set:

But I don't feel like spending eighteen bloody quid for the privelige.

Does anybody know of any other manufacturers that do something similar? Or failing that, has anybody scratchbuilt any and how hard was it?

Much obliged.

JB

Take a trip to the bead shop - fairly easy to stick two or three together to get the candle holder, candle is best done from green stuff.

how ornate do you want it?

I reckon you could do a nice wrought iron one with some plastic rod and selected plastic letters like I did for a hatstand...

Perhaps these ones from Thomarillion could be useful:

I need two, really, but thanks for the offer.  :)

Tsune, those Thormarillion ones are great, thanks!  :)

I'm a little late, here, but I think that Mega Minis has some, too....

At least one or two of the Reaper packs come with massive candle holders or candelabras.  You may be able to snag those separately.

I know that Reaper has some that comes in a set with an alter wit a girl for it.

The candelabras have snakes coiled around them...

Look for a party shop JollyBob, one of those places were mums go to get plastic do-dads to decorate cakes an such. I have one near me and I've found that the universal decoration for communion is a candlestick, gold painted plastic ones from 2.5" to 4-5''. Check around town.

I would suggest a bead shop.

Cheap decorative beads stacked on top of each other, with the advantage of a hole through the middle so you can reinforce the join with a bit of wire and also pin it to a base. If the wire pokes out of the top end too you're half way to a candle.

I really have to third this recommendation, especially as there are 'antiqued' "sculpted' metal beads that may require no painting at all. I wouldn't  be surprised if that's how the GW sticks occurred, save if they don't do it from scratch, less for the lawyers to work with if someone tries to copy. ;->=

Some more good recommendations, thanks.  :)

I was halfway to ordering the the Thormarillion ones and some of their torches in brackets, and feeling guilty about kind of copping out and taking the easy option rather than scratchbuilding some.

Now I just have to find a bead-shop in the back end of bugger all and I'm sorted. Or if not I'll be making a small contribution to the German economy after all.

You NEED to come to Denmark. You live in the home country of the wargaming hobby, and you still complain  lol

There's a good one in Edinburgh.
Last time we were there (12 months ago) they had beads (designed for earrings?) that actually look like ship's figurehead mermaids. Perfect for a 15mm ship or 25mm pirate sloop. Ready painted too.

Well quite.  :) Unfortunately there is this bit of the country that is (whisper it!) further north than Birmingham...!   :o

There's a good one in Edinburgh.

Which does indeed sound excellent. However it would still be a three hour drive for me to get there. As I said, I unfortunately live in the exact geographical midpoint of bugger and all. Seriously, when its an hours drive to the nearest motorway, you begin to notice the distinct lack of interesting shops in the area.

Not that I'm giving up, there are a couple of places I can try yet. Just don't expect me to stop complaining any time soon. I'm good at it.  :)

An hour to a motorway !

Luxury.

Even here in Scarborough we can find odd bits and pieces.

What sizes are we talking, and do you prefer plastic beads or would carved bone be ok ?

and even after that hours drive to the motorway you find there's an even bigger lack of interesting shops  :( assuming you head along the sixty six

And the goddess smiles on her favourite drunk idiot child again!  :D

Remembered Dunelm Mill has a haberdashery section, which turned out to have a limited selection of plastic beads so I bought a few packs and have had a bit of a play with them. Not altogether convinced of the result, but I think they'll do ok when they're painted.

Many thanks again chaps for the ideas and encouragement.  :)
