Title: Revenge of the Musketeer project that ate my Nerves
Post by: vikotnik on August 05, 2007, 07:54:29 PM
While playing on my Musketeer table, I had lots of ideas how to improve the table, both in quality and in flexibility.

So, I decided to sell it(including all of the miniatures and accessories...) and build a new, even better, one with additional scenes.
Over the next weeks or so, I will post some pics here on how it develops.

Well, the first miniatures are painted now. I have chosen a red scheme for the guards this time in order to make them easier to distinguish from the Musketeers.
I have added quite a well known Artizan miniature to show the scale.

The Cardinal's Boys:

Whoa! De Rochefort is HUGE! Figures from the same company, or a stylistic convention to "highlight" the characters?

Wow! those are seriously nice    :o

Not sure about the difference in sizes though.

Yes, Rochefort is quite huge. After all, he is the most able swordsman of the Cardinal, though.
All those 'normal' guards simply are not up to him.
:)

The figures all are from Eureka Miniatures. The scale is 40mm.

Reality catches up with me and I have to keep a deadlne of a commission, so no Musketeer painting for the next two weeks... :(

I have finished those two before, though. The Cardinal on the right is from Steve Barber Models. The 42mm Musketeer miniatures he produces are great, check them out! You will have to if You want to find out what the Cardinal does behind his back anyway...

I used an effect that i never tried before on the robes of the cardinal: VMC metal medium has been mixed into the highlights to achieve a silken effect, which is quite nice to the eye, even through matte varnish. Sadly, the photo does not show much of it. I will do that again on the Constance miniature...
The blade of Aramis(as those from all the other Musketeers/Guards) has been replaced with steel wire as the original ones are rather soft and likely to break during transport.

Little Popular Guy on the right again crept into the picture to show the scale...

Thanks for the nice comments so far, guys! :)
Well, the commission was finished on Sunday and I immediately started painting Musketeer stuff again.

Up here are the next two, M. Bonancieux and Athos. I decided to give Athos slightly more colour than in the last version.

Does anyone have any ideas about a company that produces suitable 40mm civilians?

I will be off to Italy for a week of holiday, taking all the Pardulon parts with me to clean them while enjoying wine, pizza and pasta. Work on the frame has to start after that...

Maybe you can find a few in the Perry range of their 40mm Border reivers.

Many thanx for the comments so far!
 :)

Well, about three weeks have passed since my last post in this thread and I have traveled(By car!) from Kiel in lovely northern Germany via Austria to northern Italy to have a week of holiday!! I sculpted some new, more sophisticated pillars there for the inevitable 'Laundry Yard Scene'. What better place for this than Italy?

After returning , I was eager to get back to this beloved project of mine and quite a few things got finished during last week:

Porthos and Constance:
Mme Bonancieux got a nice green dress this time, I hope for a nice bit of contrast on the gaming table this way.

Serving Wenches:

And the basic table construction is finished, too!
This time, the frame was made to order. I found out about a small company that makes them for not much more of the money I spent on the last one! Faces will again adorn the corners, but now, it will not be to hide nasty seams!!

The inner measure is 60x60cm and the different versions are based on 5mm MDF board and can be removed from the frame.

PVC flooring was cut to shape and glued on MDF board:

The board was covered with a mixture of sand, filler, PVA glue and black acrylic paint in order to fill the seams...

...and cleaned up again:

After a night of drying time, all there was left to do was to apply a few quick drybrushes to finish it:

I still need to let in the threads in order to be able to screw the pillars into the table edges. this will be done by the end of the week, I suppose. Ah, and only two miniatures left to paint...

Great work, Viktonik! The greens on M. Bonancieux and the glass really are phenomenal. I love the way your boards come together, and the framing on the edge of them really is excellent. I can't wait to see what faces you'll put on it this time!

Thanx again for the friendly comments, guys!

Johan, I will check out the Perry civillians at Crisis to have an even larger variety of miniatures at hand one day. I fear this journey will cost me dearly... :P

The technique I used on the glass bottle is a mixture of both ways to do it: I painted in  the highlights very carefully, then I glossed it over with VMC gloss varnish.

I had a very busy week but still found the time to finish something, hope You enjoy the pics:

First up, the playing pieces. Believe me, I really fought the teutonic urge to line them up carefully, but I lost.

The bases are underlined with felt in order not to damage the boards during gaming.

...and finally, I finished something 'big': The 'Frozen Lake Scene'!

First, I laid out the rough shapes with foam on the board:

Then I covered the shores with my 'Structure Mixture' consisting of unused cat litter, sand, white glue and water:

After drying completely, everything was painted:

Static grass came first and then Vallejo Still Water was coloured and added in several(about 10) layers:

Then came the fun part: After some plants and a bridge from Pardulon was added, I  sprayed everything with spray glue and sieved a mixture of Snow Powder from the Companythatshallnotbenamed(This really is great stuff, believe me!) and ordinary baking soda over it.

Tadaa! Here's the first completed Scene, the FROZEN LAKE!

Today, I finally am going to sculpt the faces on the corners :freak: ; I will keep You updated. :)

Wohoo,
that is going to be the highlight at the forthcoming conventions...
...love the golden shine of the frame on the last picture and the idea of the interchangeable scenic boards.

What scenes will we see next, any clues ?

Hope that the snow is hard enough for game-play, would be a pitty if not.

Looks brilliant, cheers for taking us step by step through it.

Does working in lots of thin layers with the water effects help prevent warping the board?  I tired using PVA for this a while back and my rivers went all banana.

Many thanks again for the nice comments! :)
During the last weeks, I had lots do do to finish this project in time for Crisis...
Well, yesterday evening , the last touches were added and today, the photos have been made. here goes:

First, the frame had to be finished. I finally sculpted the faces on the four corners of the table. I used 'Milliput Black' for this, as dents and scratches that happen during handling would not be so easily visible. The sculpts were then laid on with sheet metal. Sadly, the metal I used has more of a crumpled look to it; I really would have liked it to be as shiny as the sheet silver I used last time. But I like the faces nonetheless...

Smiling Face

Skull Face
(http://www.displacedminiatures.com/images/img.1193870523495.jpg)

Sun Face

Moon Face
(http://www.displacedminiatures.com/images/img.1193869015464.jpg)

I painted a lot in the last few weeks! The geese and the 'Hired blade' miniatures were left over (Pics wil follow...) and lots of bottles, plates, barrels, furniture, glasses, mugs, chests and what have you were painted.

To give You an idea of the amount of stuff that had to be finished, here are the pictures of the Bonancieux Lodgings:

...a closer look at the top floor:

One of the guest rooms:

The Bonancieux Bedroom:
The cupboard is a christmas ornament I borrowed from my wife in order to make a plaster cast of it...

The balcony is a lot larger now to allow for more swashbuckling. and it even has a proper railing. The supports are made of brass cannons I found in a local model store.

I used wooden stairs to make it possible for the miniatures to be positioned on them, so dramatic stairfights can take place on the table. :)

The Bonancieux Lodgings have some sort of a lounge as well...

The Bonancieux Lodgings have really been the more complex scenes that had to be built...

...but a man can loose all his remaining sanity points while cutting 40mm scale bedsheets out of silk... :D
So, after trying for hours and failing again(I seem not to be able to make straight cuts in silk, believe me!!!), I decided to ask my mother if she could do it for me. Which she did. To top it all off, Mrs. Vikotnik ironed them to be hung over the washing lines!
Cheers!!

In the meantime, I inserted the threads into the table and assembled and painted the beautiful 'Ornamental Well' from Eureka:

Pillars had to be painted and then, the 'Laundry Yard Scene' could be set up:

I hope You enjoyed the pics!
If some of You are at Crisis, do not hesitate to come around and have a game!

During the completion of the scenes, I had lots of ideas again. I will definitely have a tavern scene for Tactica... I will keep You updated!

 :)

Congratulations in getting the "Best Demo Game Award" at Crisis 2007.

I must say it was well deserved.
Since my little stand was just opposite Vikotnik's game table I had the pleasure of seeing how the game table was used in diffrent ways during the day.
I wrote a bit about Crisis on the Open Talk Board.

All of the players had lots of ideas when it came to swashbuckle and/or insult their opponents...
I even managed to take some photos while hosting but unfortunately, only three are recognisable due to my inability to make two things at the same time...   :?
Here they are:

Poliorketes and Yyrkoon swashbuckle around the staircase. Look at Yyrkoon pooling his dice! He even has TWO bordeaux rouge ones!!!

No it wasn't me. I just saw that there are too many people around your tables and I return to mine several time...
Sorry I didn't think that I could come to Tactica, but I must think to this idea!
I had the Future war table just neer the best of show table.

Too bad, that we were all too busy. I was the table next to Vikotnik and I hoped that some of you french guys came by. Thats because I really like your websites and work.

There was also a small forum meeting planned. Did someone show up ?

Tactica is really worth a visit. If possible you guys should give it a try.

From Hamburg to Antwerp is 550 km. You just have to add your km from your home to Antwerp and know the distance  :)

What about Toutatis next year ? Is it far from Antwerp ?

Wow,  the boards are even more impressive than the figures!  I really like the tavern scene!  I bet it makes for a great game.

AAAARGH! I've been outed!

The game was really great fun, especially the taunting part and the bord and figures were beautiful. Poor Porthos just couldn't get up that hill, which may have been part of what cost me the game. He'll have to work out more before we try that again. Poor d'Artagnan spent the second half stunned in the far corner of the board, but at least I managed to kill one of the Cardinal's Guards.

Congratulation Vikotnik for the prize "Best game with new and innovative concept". I think you should have "Best game with participation" too because, I tried to talk to you but there is always someone who play!!!

What? the best of show was for Admiral Benbow? I have a table just neer by you and I didn't know... :(  Congratulations too : you demo was fantastic !

Well, now that the whole Crisis thing is at a safe distance -we're already planning for 2008- I can say that Vikotnik's chef d'oevre was also a runner up for the best participation game.

Burkhard from DHC with his Pointe Du Hoc , the Too Fat Lardies and their Splendid Desert raid game and Vikotnik were the finalists. Second round by the 5 jury members saw  the Too Fat Lardies win, but this was the first time we had  a finalist -Vikotnik- in two different categories.

The Worringen game was competing against Entering Berlin from Les Chemins de Feu, Boston 1775 by Uli and his Dortmunders, and Waku Pilot by Battle Group South.

Simply superb work and it's games like this that makes the entire Crisis show. Thank you all guys, and can hardly wait to see what you come up with next time!

Wat was the name again of the material you used to replace the blades? I can't remember and my dentist was very uncooperative. She just gave me a blank look when I explained what I wanted and even more when I said what I wanted it for...

@WillieB:
Thank You very much again! I am already honoured to have won the prize and now You tell me that I have been nominated for two!! :D  :D

I really can seriously recommend going to Your convention. All of the TSOA-guys and girls gave us a warm welcome and there were enthusiatic gamers at every table, not to mention the trade stands. The TSOA game must have been fun, too, because cheers and noises were heard from there throughout the day!
 :)

It simply is 0.5x0.65mm steel wire ground to a point. You should go to a dental laboratory or to a supply store for this kind of business and ask there.

 Before I had my job, I used to ask at the dentist, too(And got the same stare!!!); not knowing that they just incoporate the pieces into the patient.
Probably she does not know that such a thing as wire in these measurements exists.

Some time ago, I promised a pic of the last remaining miniatures:

Some of the trade stands at Crisis carried the magnificent Border Reivers by Perry Miniatures and I painted one of them up to be used as a civilian. Sash and Saber have some brilliant miniatures to be used as civillians-more to come later.

Meanwhile, Tactica is approaching fast and I thought of including another scene for my demo there. Tactica is one of the biggest German conventions with the most beautiful gaming tables that I have ever seen. Be sure to come along if You have the opportunity; at least check out their site:

http://www.hamburger-tactica.de/tactica/tactica_e.html

Evilcartoonist mentioned in his excellent '40mm Old West figure collection' - thread that Sash and Saber even produce a 40 mm stagecoach. That was exactly what I needed!

Browsing through the net, I found only the pic from their website that shows the coach, so I thought that it might be useful to have some step-by-step pics from the process of building this thing.

Here is what You get when You order it:

Additionally, some cast rings were also included plus a gigantic base that did not fit into the pic!

Mr Popular(Circled in blue!) crept into the picture again to indicate scale. In general, the positioning of the parts is pretty obvious, the instructions are clear enough.

Except for one thing: If anybody knows what the part circled in red is meant for, let me know :?:

After about three hours of removig flash and fiddling around with the parts, the built-up coach looks like this:
The long part in the front(I do not know what this is called, sorry...) was carefully  soldered to the chassis. I have never soldered parts of miniatures before and I really can recommend it if You have fragile parts and want a really strong bond nonetheless.

The miniatures included in the set have to be converted, too. I have started with the driver:

More pictures are to follow!

Could it be the brake, glued somewhere at the side of the driver's seat?

It is probably the brake handle, as Zafarelli says.  See this picture.

(Sorry, can't figure out how to show pictures in thread!)

It's called the tongue.

I've also been looking at this kit.  Soon!

Yep defiantely the brake handle.
Great conversion on the driver.  :)  I did the same thing with the Dixon 28mm stagecoaches to use with my Victorian games.
Can't wait to see this painted up, its going to look stunning :D

ftp://Despite finishing the coach just in time for this year's Tactica(Which took place in February...), I finally found the time to take some photos!

The idea was to have a gap-filling scenario that features D'Artagnan and Rochefort fighting it out on the roof of the speeding coach while dodging the obvious branches and, err... washing lines that just come across in scenes like this.  :D

So, I needed the roof to be flat in order to accomodate enough space for the miniatures. Besides, the original roof had some rather nice 'fastened-luggage-detail' sculpted on. Sadly, it was very badly cast with zillions of air bubbles, so I discarded it.
I simply cut a piece of plastic sheet into the desired shape and added a rim with Milliput. The small railing is made from wire. The wooden effect is hand painted.

Why on earth should D'Artagnan fight with his arch-enemy on the roof of a coach when there's nothing inside to fight about? As can be seen in the previous pictures, there are some passengers included in the Sash and Saber kit. I simpy cut away the husband of the married couple and resculpted the missing parts. Then, I changed the head of the original miniature for that of Constance. Here goes romance:

Finally, a look on the paint job of the driver(Or is it 'rider' in this case?):

The winner would have a slight advantage in the next scene to be played. Sadly, it was never played on as nearly everybody wanted to play the laundry yard scene! Well, that's how it goes...

All in all, I can only recommend this model! It was great fun to build, and I like the looks of it very much. The casting quality clearly above average(Except for the roof). Ordering from Sash and Saber US was a pleasure, very friendly emails and a sensible shipping service. Highly recommended!

Anyway, I hope to have a new scene finished for next year's Tactica, if so, I will post pictures here...

EDIT: I have uploaded the pictures into my personal gallery, but the links do not seem to work! Why? >:(
Does anybody know?

EDIT: Aaaah, now I remembered! THX Björn!

Do you mean this picture ?

The only other musketeer pic was Dartagnan.
