Yes, there it is... I have a CD based project which I want to do in any case so I figured I might as well enter, unless it complicates things. We'll see later.
After having carefully perused our CD collection, which is not barren of candidates, let me tell you, I picked this...
Unbearable music, no nostalgia attached, not even corny in an entertaining way. Having well rounded buttocks makes for no pardon, had it been a music video I might have reconsidered.
Surface scratched and roughened for better glue adhesiveness.
-
Is it going to be an Aztec temple? A Mayan zigurat? A llama shed?
Any clues?
-
I am going for the minimalistic: it is a community ice skating rink. ;)

Ah, nice. Going by the approx. diameter of 120mm would I be correct in guessing you will also be using the popular 9.642mm scale for the skaters?

The very same. :)

It is going to be a blast template. Crater almost ready, just going to carv some deep cracks around the circumference.

Shakira! Shakira!
That is all.
Although, your choice of materials has me intrigued...!
-
I am bitter. Just when you think you have a cast iron formula for airbrushing, skin colour, pine trees it turns on you and bites you in the ass. This time is the paper mache again, which managed to warp the CD. The fucking CD! I can hardly snap a CD in two with my hands!
-
I think you need to consult an isangoma, as it would appear that you have been cursed by a wizard (umthakathi).
Perhaps you should be more careful when dissing Shakira in future.
-
The fucking CD! I can hardly snap a CD in two with my hands!
lol
Throw that papier mache out the window once and for all. If your lucky it might end up in the ocean and become a bridge made out of waste barrels, old soviet subs, dead cod and papier marche. I'd say that's an overall forever win in all further contests ;)
On a serious note, I really do Hood that it just messed up a bare cd :/ And you should go with the sand+pva+filler=Solid Love-sollution. That doesn't warp cd's at least :)
-
lol

Fuck you and the mackerel you rode in on, I am sticking with the paper mache! >:D Plus it would probably warp the bottom of the sea.

I managed that first time I made CD based scenery. Funnily enough, I thought I had great foresight in doing exactly this:
Surface scratched and roughened for better glue adhesiveness.
Let's just say, I no longer scratch and roughen!
-
Use the image-side, you lump ;). The data-side is the only thing keeping it together. I burst bad music CDs with one hand all the time, dunn no what your issue is. I might hasten to add that the flak from bursting them in this manner is lethal to the eyes and should not be attempted. (an unwanted person within my room at the time got shot down like a B-29, though without the eye-dicing part)
Gawd, what am I talking to you about for anyhoo?
What is the result of the crater anyway? An anti-personel mine, or an anti-materiel mine? Maybe Shakira singing at the ground...?
-

At least I can both fish and swim in the ocean next to me :p
Anyways, I really hope that you can sort the issue out. And as Bako wrote, do your basing on the printed side...

I am doing OK, I bent the CD till the groundwork cracked in a few places. Item is now perfectly flat again without any visible cracks.
(for those who do not know me/us, Silversix and I are from Swedish antipodes and are, of course joshing)

A bit of progress:

What's going on here? ???

I don't think that is the only thing on the blink, I think the brain is going as well lol
What is that :o :o :o
-
I always loved that specific species of sea urchin, always making up for itself it was.
Can't wait to see the tendrils fleshed out. This'll make either an awesome explosion effect or some tendrils of forced intrusion oncee painted up. Any shrapnel or body parts planned for the effect?
Please don't josh around, only us 'joshs' can josh the joshed around. (I like my name, except for when it's butchered by a southern accent, thank you.) :)
-
What's going on here? ???
Haven't a clue.
But I wouldn't want to sit on it... :o
;)

I know what's going on there :D

CDs don't warp. What did you do to it?? lol

It all comes down to the mighty shrinking powers of Celluclay and white glue. Winter bathing is nothing in comparison.

Crazy stuff. Glueing sand onto a 10 mm chipboard makes it warp slightly, but when I do the same to a CD, no warping occurs. I thought they were simply too rigid.
Did it warp all the way round or only in one direction? I ask, because chipboard seems to warp towards the centre, with the corners raising slightly, but the structure of the celluclay might have something to do with it....

It shrinks inwards and thus lifts the circumference.

Hmmm, just the same effect, then. So it boils down to the more water/liquid added to the material used, the stronger the shrinkage and warping. And a thick layer of material contains more liquid than a thin one, that's probably why the conical shape of the crater could do what a layer of sand can't.
Darn... I really thought CDs were the perfect base for anything.

As been pointed out by others several times already there are several non- or less-shrink materials. I like Celluclay for its other properties however. I think applying it in several times in sections could work.

Sure, I'm just trying to understand the basic physics here :)

Maypoles on steriods?
-
I reckon it's the structure for 'blasts' and there will be some sort of chicken wire/mesh around them and then they'll be covered in flocking and painted :D
Could be wrong though ;D
cheers

You're a bright young man, James. The hope of the nation.

Woodland Scenics foam flock was glued to the bamboo skewers (the cotton string was added to get better adhesiveness). I first used a brand tacky glue, a product completely without discernible merits. Quite abhorrent to work with. It is made to make flock like this stick to tree models but that doesn't happen. It is ideal for making flock stick to your fingers, I ended up looking like I was wearing moth eaten summer green mitten. I brought out the trusted glue gun to remedy the situation.
Next I will spray the flock black.

Looking very effective already, very nice idea. ;D

Not mine, I must admit. Nicked from the people behind WHH Great War.
-
It's almost effective as some kind of alien flora too. This will shape out nicely. :)
-
Really cool, Hammers!
Are you going to seal the flock in any way, or do you just trust your airbrush and a bucket load of paint to do the job?
-

*Everything* works as alien flora.

No I am going to depend on a can of matte black base paint and the airbrush for shades of gray hilites.
-
After two coats of black primer:
Ideally I would have used dark forest green foam but I had none in stock. The primer covers pretty well, so no problem there. No melting of the foam detected.
-
A layer of middle gray primer:
I hope this doesn't come across as crass, but I get 9/11 vibes from the look of this, so I think I'm on the right track. The trick now is to decide whether it need further hilites.
-
A dusting of tan followed by white.
I may have overdone it slightly. It is now basically ready, part from some further 'embellishments'. Also, I did a shoddy job masking the groundwork so there are patches of jolly Irish green foam shining through around the crater. I'll cover those up with a paintbrush.
-
The hope of the nation.
Christ, I hope not lol lol lol
Looking very good there Peder :) Are you going to paint a little bit of residual explosion right in the middle?
cheers
James

I am not sure. Those fireball explosions we see in movies are effect shots often powered by petrolium gas/air mixes. I am no expert in this area but I hear most high explosives don't blow with a obvious flame (this is supported by what I detect in war documentaries).
On the other hand I am the kind of wargamer who go by what looks good and I happily take my inspiration from film SFX. :)
-
*Everything* works as alien flora.
Sadly, that is quite right. :)
It's looking good so far.

Flora is a spread... not a margarine... margarine isn't sold in the UK... god bless QI...

They both taste horrible on a piece of bread no matter spread or not ;)
-
I could not resist the experiment so I airbrushed some vivid special effects explosion colours to the blast. I can't quite decide if it looks better. More colourful, to be sure, and slightly better in RL as these things tend to do. What do you folks think? Should I keep it as is, tone it done a notch with a black and grey dusting or simply paint it back to the way it was?
-
I think it looks very effective and adds some color.
Before, I think, it could have been mistaken for a dark, oddly shaped tree - but not like this.
BOOM! :o
-
I think some slight highlight on the highest tips in grey n black would look good.
-

...of the coloured section, you mean?
-
Yes, I think it will enhance the idea that the fire is contained within a much larger explosion of smoke, as disuses earlier in the topic.
-
Its great that you've coloured it. Sure, it isn't "realistic", but it enhances the gameplay :)
-
I have to say it looks much better IRL. Threedimnsionality makes a huge difference with this piece. It is tha same if you look at the pics in WHH Great War.
-
A few bits I will cram into the base, two blast victims. To the right a OG Pathan casualty striking a just-so attitude. To the left a modded Perry ACV plastic horse. I took the photo from the wrong angle, but it has trailing entrails and other little cute details, like exposed GW skeletal horse ribs.
-
Nice, in a gruesome kind of way :)
I think the extra detail will really bring it to life. :)
-
Thank you for this tutorial! I´ve always wondered how this is done. The "special effect" airbrushed in makes it outstanding!
Cheers
Jan
-
Very effective. 8) I'd also wondered how this was achieved and so thanks for the inspiration. :)
-
So this goes down on the turn that the fire mission lands. Does it get replaced with a proper crater on the turn afterwards, or does the frozen explosion dominate the field for the rest of the game?
(I can imagine accesorizing this marker with a few "drifting smoke" markers that are lined up downwind of the crater, then removed on succeeding turns. Perhaps nastly yellow-green ones for the Gas shells the vile foe are flinging... Hmmm.

It's just a template. I imagine it will stay on the board for the duration of a turn. On a Great War board, I imagine you could keep a few permanently on the board for ambiance. Of course you could replace it with a crater which could be played as difficult ground/cover but I see no great merit in doing that for my own board.

That's starting to look really nice I especially like the gruesome 'additions'.

Thanks, Nick. I try to make it a bit of a Hammers trademark.

Nice of you to say so, Duncan.

So I was looking at the "extra bits to add" photo and the wife glanced over my shoulder; "COOOL!! OH ICK!"
Had to share.
