For as long as I've been wargaming (about 15 years) I've wanted to game the Great War but I could never find rules or a scale that fit what I wanted. Two days ago I suddenly jumped in with both feet! I went to the nearest wargame shop and slapped down $460.00 on Renegade, Brigade and Great War 28mm figures!
I've begun writing my own rules and basically I've got enough figures for a British and a German battalion. I'm planning on running a scenario at my local club in October or November of the 21st Bn CEF (Eastern Ontario) assault on the Sugar Factory at Courcelette during the battle of the Somme. I've sent away for trench maps and am planning a visit to the Canadian Archives to find photos of the ruined factory so that I can get the table looking as accurate as possible. Am I mad? Do rabbits like to bump uglies?
While it is a big project and I may have gone a bit nuts on the research, I have to say that I haven't been this fired up about a game or period since my early wargaming days. I'm having a blast! Anyone want to playtest the rules? I have no plans to publish them but if they are a success at the club I'll probably post them on the web for free down load.
Cheers

You can try one of THESE (http://www.angelfire.com/az3/twohourwargames/index.html), test rules are free but work really well - fast and dunamic otoh I don't know what may happen if You use them for hyper-battle :)
can't wait to see such a great battle on monitor of my pc!:D

I would not really try the Two Hour rule sets unless you know someone that already plays them. I found them to really be in need of a good edit and a possible rewrite. There is an interesting system in there somewhere but its quite difficult to dig it out.

The best thing about the THW rules is the mailing list.
While the books could indeed use a good editor, the writer is very quick to answer any questions you have.
Good rules though and worth a try.

well I know myself a bit if that's enough for You
the only problem to be solved is fitting thg rules for large battles - largest one I've already played included ~30 minis...
but maybe considering a squad/team/platoon as the unity for testing reaction would work? that's actually what I'd do! :)

I've picked up several of the THW rule sets, including Nuts (WW2) and Warrior Heroes (Fantasy Army). If you disregard some of the individual characteristics used in Nuts, and play at the base/team level instead of individual, it works just fine. The WH rules are written just this way in fact, so comparing the two gives a good feel for how and what to convert.
That said, I still don't see them adapting well to larger than a battalion level game, unless you're going to use a scaling ratio of some sort. There are a lot of support options you'd probably want at that level that aren't there. Still, they may provide a good jumping-off point.
I've not gamed THW extensively, but I've enjoyed the bit I've done so far.
