Title: Dinosaur Hunting?
Post by: admiraldick on 27 September 2010, 12:16:14 PM
my friend is very keen to try a dinosaur hunting game, so i said i'd do a little reseach and see what i come up with. well, a search on this forum hasn't pulled up too much, so i thought i'd ask directly:

do you know or play any games about victorian gents hunting for dinosaurs (either in some lost world or after travelling in time)?

There are lots of rules around, I cant link to groups etc at work but

Cave wars and Lost world Safari are 2 Yahoo groups which have lots of free rules and suggestions on them.

I had a thrown together set we used for Blam a couple of years ago using a form of LOTOW should be on here some where

.45 Adventure Thrilling Expeditions has a lot of rules for dinos... I think the system could be easily adjusted for Victorian games, too.

But maybe someone has a better suggestion...

The second issue of "Shocking Tales Of Madness And Mayhem" (The expansion to Strange Aeons...) will include rules for dino. hunting....set in 1920 the rules could be tweeked to fit victorian stuff.

Out next May...if you can wait that long.

"Adventures In The Lost Lands" from Two Hour Wargames.

You can play as Victorian, Pulp or Modern era humans against dinos, prehistoric mammals or Neanderthals etc - even against rival expeditions. You can also play as any of the above prehistoric creatures versus any other opponent. Playing as cavemen against a rival  tribe of different cavemen is a lot of fun as is taking the role of a T. Rex on the hunt.

You can play solo, two or multiplayer either against each other or Vs the game.

Great fun and reasonably priced, with a thriving YahooGroup for support :D

Saurian Safari by HLBSco

I'd second that or 'Bog A Ten'. Not sure who is selling it now, perhaps North Star?

I have an old copy of Bog-A-Ten I got off Evil Bay. Never played it (apart from at a Salute participation game years ago) as it's more of a multi-player game and I'm definitely just me. Very good game though, as is Tusk which I like so much I bought a second copy when my first fell to bits. Easily playable solo and simple enough for a large multi-player game.

I've not played Saurian Safari, but Chris Peers' other games are usually a lot of fun, so no reason why it shouldn't be too.

I have Tooth and Claw, which is purely for mammals, but in a similar vein to SS.

I have never actually played it but his rules do seem to cover their subject matter well.

Adventures In The Lost Lands does look very interesting.

thank you everyone. that's given me plenty to investigate. sounds like Saurian Safari might be one to take a long look at.

Not a hunt, per se, but I've a friend that runs a 'find the temple' game that devolves into dodge and/or snuff the hostile sauran fauna.  lol

I believe Chris Palmer has done likewise.

Proving that a bit of imagination, and a good set of rules, in both these cases G.A.S.L.I.G.H.T., can get you started.

I'm sure Sir Randall will run such a safari as you seek, and am just as certain hideous lizard folk (tm) will make a 'surprise' appearance. ;->=

If the Saurian Safari ones aren't available, why don't you just make up your own!?
