Title: Tramp Steamer Reference Books
Post by: Schweizer on 29 September 2010, 11:28:24 AM
I'm working on a project (not gaming related, but you guys are so darn smart, and it may help someone ELSE do something gaming related, so...) where a lot of the action will be taking place aboard a tramp steamer, and I was wondering if anyone knows of any books that serve as a good catch-all for reference.  Pics of engines, floor plans, etc.  If it's a gaming book, that's great; if a reference book, that's great too.

Not really looking for fiction this time around - already have Pease, L'Amour, etc.

Thanks!

you could try "trawling" through the Ian Allan books website - they have a lot of transport books including shipping so there should be something there.
Failing that how about one of the modelling magazines such as "model boats" as they sometimes have scale plans on offer.

sorry I can't be more specific

There's this PDF floating around the internet, with a good basic set of information about pre-WW2 tramp steamers, aimed specifically at gamers: http://home.earthlink.net/~djackson24/TrampSteamer2.pdf

It's got a few (smallish) diagrams and deckplans, and lots of good information.

I have to say Wirelizard that that is an excellent link - and the link towards the end of the PDF is just as good.

Thanks so much, guys!  The pdf is great, and much appreciated, and I'll be checking for modeling books next time I'm in a store with a selection (there are a few in my area).  Thanks again!

Splendid plan. I shall find practical use for this.

The best non-fiction book I've found is "Tramp: Sagas of High Adventure in the Vanishing World of the Old Tramp Freighters," by Michael J. Krieger.  It's a large format book filled with color photos of tramp steamers all across the world, with interesting stories from their owners and crew.  About 140 pages.  OOP, but available through ABE or Amazon used books at a reasonable price.

I noticed a strange fact that I never had thouhgt of when I was investigating in that same subject. Tramp steamers appear to have been/still be no specific class of ships, but virtually any vessel that set sails without a destination, expecting to be directed to the most plentyful load while at sea. This will allow you a lot of artistic license, but I started my research with the Venture from King Kong which was very much exactly what I looked for.

If you'd like some great audio inspiration, try "The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen," an old time radio show set aboard a Pacific tramp steamer and available for free at http://www.archive.org/details/VoyageOfTheScarletQueen

Anyone have a copy of this pdf they could send me? Original link is no more...

If you paste the URL into the Wayback Machine at https://archive.org/ you can still download the file.
Just did it... and the PDF looks fine.

Not working for me. Don’t see any results from a search...

Check your downloads folder... the PDF doesn't open, it just downloads.
There is no link to the file on the archived pages either.

Probably be easier for everyone if I just re-host the file: Tramp Steamer 2.pdf (https://drive.google.com/open?id=1O2Cba7rUIj7xjNvE-0QwG652Z7_zprWl)
