Title: Special Branch of Security - (Quar)
Post by: Orkdung on 07 October 2010, 07:30:26 PM
Mr.Cyllog Crafank is the slimiest dastard on the continent of Alwyd.
He falls under command of only two Quar; that of Tos Wen Cryk and Alykinder himself.
He is just as comfortable with blade in hand or forked tongue, doing the bidding of Alykinder - spreading half-truths, supplanting information and turning any Quar opposed to the Crusade on one another.

He travels alone, and is only mentioned in hushed conversation in the very darkest recesses of smoke filled pubs and bars throughout the many regions of Alwyd.
He goes by many names; in Coftyr he is known as Old Cygydd, in Maer Braech he is simply known at Lonyd, and in Fidwog he is called Spittlefink.
He is the most nefarious of Quar.
Beware dark alleys and speak not poorly of the goodly Chancellor Alykinder, for if you do you will surely be visited by Mr Crafank.

Oh yeah, a Quarsassin-slash-Inquarsitor! Now we can sleep peacefully!

Nice work on the cloak, both the folds and the paintjob.

I'm probably going to regret asking this, but I keep seeing them and haven't got a clue what all the fuss is about...

So (here goes) what exactly is a Quar?

 Quar are...Quar.

But my personal definition of Quar are:  little Anteater/Fraggle Rock Fraggles/ Dark Crystal Skeksis, Ralph Bakshi's Wizards/Vaughn Bodé's Cheech Wizard - Cobolt 60 -War Lizards, Heavy Metal, and Miyazaki's great films crashing head on into a family of Lemmings.
 o_o

Quar are a state of mind, they are a parody of us and our war-like ways.

The Quar live on a little planet and have been fighting since the beginning of time, their War is called the Long War and has been going on actually 700 years.
Quar are stuck in their ways; they dont like change and they have a tough time understanding when things do.
To date one Quar has come forward to stop the Long War, he has instituted the Crusade, a war to end all wars...ironically...you get the picture  ::)

Dont know if I can do it justice but here goes;

Think Anthropormorphic Anteaters

An alien race (on their own world) are clans in nature with each area/principalityruled by royalty - think Baron wars. There has been an age long civil war going on between the warrring factions.

One of the Generals Alykinder creates a doctrine where Quar should be united to throw down the royal/leading families and thus end the endless (the long war) fighting...so the Crusade is born, the troops who join or who are conquered and end up fighitng are known as Crusaders, whilst the more traditional factions are termed loyalists.

So when you look at the figures the Crusaders are more akin to WW1 technology with in their terms progressive weapons and gear think assault troops with supporting weapons teams, whilst royalists are more traditional (think dress uniforms and old doctrines)

Throw into the mix partisans defending their homeland and more to come......

What is good is that it is a fresh take on sci Fi, I find myself taknig bits from history, VSF etc and working them into my forces, yes they look a little like cartoon characters but if your follow the fluff on the website (zombiesmith) and on their forum you will see the world unfolding and can add your take to fit in with your troops and the like. The closest I can say to this has been the VBCW developments which catch peoples imaginations

LTD and Orkdung pretty much summed it up. Quar are the perfect blend of grit and whimsy. Trench warfare, pot-bellied anthropomorphic anteaters, lumbering tanks, messenger squirrels, ...what's not to love!?

Hey Blood, your predecessor as Swashbuckling Adventures moderator, the honorable Pete Murray, wrote a load of the fluff for the Quar game.

Fantastic conversion! Lots of character, and I love the back-story for him. Perhaps he's not the only shadow operative around?

Thanks for the explanations  :)
So they're warlike anteaters on an alien world in a kind of VSF / WWI setting.

Are they a pure invention of the figure company or are they derived from SF literature?

They are from Josh's/headzombie (Zombiesmith.com) imagination, he drew them as a kid, and has had the good fortune of bringing them to life.

The story:
Recently my five-year-old godson was introduced to my large Star Wars toy collection.
When he saw the AT-AT, nearly as tall as he is, he literally wet his pants. His father and
I high-fived, he was certainly raising a boy after my own heart.
This is almost how I feel about each new piece of Quar art or sculpted green.
Sad, I know, but the Quar have been a part of my life for at least twenty-five years. My
young self would spend hours and hours drawing elaborate, and violent, battle scenes
more often than not involving the Quar who fought anything from each other to Revolutionary
War Americans to dinosaurs. They were equal opportunity ass-kickers.
It has been very satisfying to see the Quar appeal to the entire range of gamers
from fantasy miniatures gamers to hardcore hex and counter wargamers. I can’t put
my finger on why they have such broad appeal, but eight-year old me would be very
proud! The Quar wouldn’t exist to the extent they do today without a crew of talented
folks so thanks go to Sequoia, Aaron, Pete and Anthony who now own the world as
much as I do and have helped me bring those stories of twenty-five years ago to life!

Invention? Derived? Surely they are South American.

I actually like to think of them as Clangers :D
