ok... have twisted and bent and fiddled with the woodland scenics placcy tree armatures and I have these large oval mdf things kicking about so figure I might as well do those as bases...

I've another base for another 6 trees, but am wondering if breaking them up into 2's and 3's on smaller bases might be a better idea...
and just for illusions sake...

of course could buy a pack of the smaller ones for some more variety...
ignore the bevelled edge, I can fill that out - they were supposed to be place mats or something... just wondering if two oval clumps will look odd....
I have 2 of the old metal Woodland Scenic armatures somewhere, one is on a cd, so could have those on the outskirts, but they're about the same size...

I think that's a nice sized base to denote a small wood - seems to me that it readily deals with where the perimeter is.
I always prefer an odd number of trees as, to me, it has the effect of looking more 'natural' but if you can't do seven then I'd stick with six as volume is better than sparcity.
Two oval clumps pushed next to each other for a bigger wood could look odd, when viewed from either end. Have you considered getting some inserts cut to use as 'jigsaw' pieces or maybe just a small round base (mini-cd size) to fill (most of) the gap?. BTW, hobby craft sell mini-CD sized wooden disks.
What are you planning to use for foliage?

no hobbycraft around here sadly (to my knowledge) I think I'll go with the one oval and make some smaller pieces that can snuggle up nicely...
EDIT: oh dear - never even thought to look for a hobbycraft webstore, maybe ebay though

just some clump foliage - nothing too grand...

I individually based mine on left over plasti-card and use these little undergrowth bits to represent the perimeter of the wood - very flexible for varying the area of wood as needed although it is a pain in the bum when they get knocked over during a game... ::)

An oval with bits sticking off will look good though. :D
Oh and where do you buy your clump foliage from - you've achieved fantastic volume with it! ;)

yeah, plasticard is an option - the mdf is 6mm thick which is unnecessary... and I could be more irregular and as SI has said, odd numbers look more real... hmmm

I did something similar as well. I used smaller pieces of MDF than you and I used bits of tree bark to create rocky outcroppings.
