Title: Shootout at Tower Mine: Multiplayer Battle Report (pic heavy)
Post by: Maniacus on 28 October 2010, 03:57:10 AM
The following is a battle report from a multi-player Legends of the Old West game that occurred as part of our LOTOW campaign a while back at one of our local stores: Tower Games in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the US.

The scenario took place in the old "Tower Mine", with the posses all having been drawn into the fight due to the lure of gold ore that was located in crates found throughout the mine.  Each posse's objective was to search through equipment crates in order to find and collect as much gold ore as possible and then get off the board with it, all of course without failing a Head for the Hills test first.

The initial battle report appears as published in the campaign's Tower Gazette newspaper.

TOWER GAZETTE

Shootout at Tower Mine
October 18, 1878

The old Tower Mine was, Monday of last week, the scene of a sudden, distressing, and fatal occurrence when several parties engaged in an extended exchange of violent disagreement.  Rumors reached Sheriff Buck Wheeler of several unsavory groups heading toward the mine with intentions to abscond with the recent lode of gold ore. A posse of several upstanding citizens was formed to investigate.

Shortly after entering the mine, the sharp report of a pistol rang out in the passageways and a chaotic situation ensued.  During the fracas a number of groups known to the law were spotted, including members of the Slippery Slope Gang, the Chesebrough Outlaws, and the infamous Bumpus Clan.  The Rangers of the Black Company were also on scene, but their specific intentions remain unknown.  A number of combatants were shot dead and several of the gangs were said to have made off with large portions of the stash from the mine.

It is said that warrants for a number of the participants are currently being sworn out, including those for Ma Bumpus and the notorious Leroy Jenkins of the Slippery Slope Gang.

The Slippery Slope Gang is the first posse to enter the mine in search of riches.

The rangers of the Black Company silently stalk forward into the darkness.

The Chesebrough Outlaws move out with guns at the ready.

The Bumpus Clan enters the mine looking for loot and itchin’ for a scrap.

The Chesebrough Outlaws are the first to find some gold ore in a stack of supply crates.  They secure their loot and establish a defensive position behind an ore cart.

Meanwhile the rangers search through some crates but come up empty.

Ma Bumpus cackles excitedly as she discovers a stack of ore but then tells the rest of the family to keep movin’ forward, after spotting some 'rotten blue bellies' up ahead.

Unaware that he’s been spotted by the Bumpuses, Sheriff Wheeler leads his posse further into the mine but is so far unsuccessful in his search for the ore.

Mable Bumpus uses her feminine wiles to distract a surprised ranger while the rest of the family sneaks up into position out of sight behind her.

The Chesebrough Outlaws begin to unload on the Slippery Slope Gang…

…while a three-way shootout erupts between the Bumpus Clan, the sheriff’s posse, and the rangers.

The Bumpus hounds charge into two upstanding citizens as they rummage through the storage crates looking for gold ore.

Meanwhile the fight with the rangers continue in the neighboring chamber.

With loot in hand, the Slippery Slope Gang heads down a passageway to make a quick exit, but they are intercepted by the Chesebrough Outlaws.

With the other gangs distracted, the Chesebrough Outlaws try to rummage through the remaining ore storage crates but are set upon by the Bumpus hounds.

The lawmen try to make a quick withdrawal from the mine with their loot, but run right into the infamous Leroy Jenkins and the rest of the Slippery Slope Gang.  Under withering fire from the outlaws, the sheriff and his posse lose their nerve and head for the hills, leaving their gold ore behind and up for grabs.

It looks like the Chesebrough Gang will get away with their ill-gotten gains.

As Ma Bumpus looks on, the rangers rush forward to grab the gold that was dropped by the fleeing lawmen.  Only the Slippery Slope Gang now stands in their way – but that can be taken care of with the application of a little dymamite…
(http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w286/Terrain-Specialties/Other%20Events/Tower%20Games%20-%20Old%20West/Shootout%20at%20Tower%20Mine%2010-13-08/TowerMineShootout74.jpg)

The gangs all hold their breath in fear of cave ins as the dynamite blast roars throughout the entire mine.

When the smoke clears the victims lay motionless and bloody.  However, to the surprise of the rangers the outlaw Leroy Jenkins still stands defiant with sixgun in hand, ready to defend his gold even to the last bullet.

A great layout and as already said a welcome change from the usual 'high noon' shootouts!

Which posse is ahead/won your campaign?

Which posse is ahead/won your campaign?

As the campaign drew to a close I believe the posses most in the running for the top spot were the Black Company (Texas Rangers list), the Bumpus Clan (Outlaws), and the Slippery Slope Gang (also Outlaws).  The Texas Rangers ultimately finished up with the highest infamy rating.

Another example of beautiful terrain that I will now have to go away and try and unsuccessfully recreate (if I ever get time). How I hate you Lead Adventures lot.   ;) :)

Looks like you had a cracking game there.

Excellent report!

Top marks for terrain, painting and write-up. The action was clear and the gangs were characterful . Just about the best LOTOW battle report I've seen.

Kudos!

Been playing a lot of Red Dead Redemption, so this is particularly appealing.
I just picked up a copy of LotOW in trade, and I'm trying to decide if I want to go 15mm or 28.
28mm just looks so appealing...

I was thinking the same thing… except it would be for a Fubar/Dungeon Bash game

@ thebinmann, the dogs are from Ral Partha.  Looks like they are still available from the Iron Wind online store.  Item # DH-404 & DH-405.

As a side note on the dogs, since there aren't officially dogs in the LOTOW rules, John added them to his Outlaw gang by paying the points for Rowdies equipped with knives.  Seemed to work very well and for some reason those dogs had the knack for taking out more than their fair share of opponents in hand to hand.  They ended up becoming quite the terror in the campaign.
